Flaw

A quintet from Louisville, KY, Flaw aims at creating relevance and lively meaning to the nu metal scene, using it as the foundation for dynamic, hard-driven music. The core of Flaw pulled together in 1996 when Jason Daunt placed an ad for a guitarist and Chris Volz answered. Volz's adoptive mother, an opera singer who had performed at the Kennedy Center, had helped develop his musical talent. After she committed suicide when Volz was 12, he spent years in various types of psychotherapy, gaining insights that bypass most people. It was from this experience that Volz shaped his personal style of lyrics, expressing how one gets through inner turmoil and hurts. Songs such as "Inner Strength," "Whole" (a song about his mother's death), and "Only the Strong" reflect his inner growth.

Originally calling themselves F. Law, the group decided it was more open than the name implied, that everyone and everything has flaws. Thus, they dropped the period and became Flaw. In 1997, Ryan Jurhs (five-string bass, background vocals) joined with Volz and Daunt, while the rest of the lineup kept revolving. Jurhs had just finished his stint with the Marines and was joining the music scene. Within a few weeks, Flaw recorded their first indie record, American Arrogance. Two of the eight tracks, "Amendment" and "Reliance," are also on the band's official debut album, Through the Eyes. The indie record opened the door for Flaw to open for bands such as Econoline Crush and Fear Factory. The band put out two more independent records, Flaw in 1998 and Drama EP in 2000, both of which were well-received. Flaw's lineup firmed up in 1999 when Chris Ballinger (drums) and Lance Arny (guitar) came aboard. Arny tended toward being a technical player, while Daunt went for the impromptu odd sounds, and Volz aimed his lyrics at the healing process in life and childhood. The combination worked.

In 2000, Flaw showcased at CBGB in New York where Republic/Universal heard them and signed them up. With David Bottrill (who had taken Tool and Peter Gabriel to the top) as their producer, Flaw began recording at Sound City in Los Angeles in early 2001. Republic/Universal released Flaw's official debut album, Through the Eyes, in October 2001 in both clean and explicit versions. While the album had a hint of the Tool influence, the uniqueness of Flaw remained solid and the album received rave reviews. ~ Eleanor Ditzel, Rovi

Don't read this cause it actually works. You will be kissed on the nearest possible Friday by the love of your life. Tomorrow will be the best day ofyour life. However if you don't post this you will die in 2 days. Now you've started reading so don't stop. This is so scary. Put this on at least 5 songs in 143 minutes. When done press f6 and your lovers name will come on the screen in big letters. This is scary cause it really works

Yeah and 5 bolt main is badass too!
The lead singer formed a band called 5 bolt main
I don't think they are together anymore. They are so awesome, it's a real pity. Great rock band - every song is great.
I wish they would release a new album, such a good band.
My brother, Sean Rued, was the drummer on their last tour. He's incredible as is Flaw!
Just heard Best I Am and dug it. Bless Pandora for showing me new music.

I got to meet Chris Volz personally, he came to my house a few years ago with my cousin who is also somewhat with the music industry. Chris is one of the coolest, down to earth people i've met, and has an AMAZING voice :)
How can you guys compare mushroomhead to Flaw, there is no comparisen. Mushroomhead fockin rocks everyone of there Cd's. Flaw rocks too but music is totally different between the two bands!
Mushroomhead is a little gimmicky but they have a couple albums that are okay. However musically they are not even in the same league as the first 2 FLAW albums.Volz always writes out of pure genuine emotion and experience while bands like Mushroomhead have to base their music off of other's lives, movies and other avenues of entertainmen t . N o t saying they are horrible just that their ART is based on someone else's ART in most cases..Flaw' s debut record let you look inside a young man's struggles..
Lol, Mushroomhead is better, but these guys are still good...
Some of the chillest musicians I've met. They played at a small venue here in town about 8 years ago and got a chance to eat with the band after.
baldydw_50

Ditto.
I can't believe I've never heard of this band before now. Just heard "Medicate" from Endangered Species. Thanks Pandora!
After failing to find a label Chris and todays version of Flaw decided to release their long awaited new album by themselves. The album is titled 'Homegrown studio sessions' and is available through their website. They did not have a producer for this album so they self produced and I must admit that the album's final mix is so terrible it makes the songs sound like they were made in a garage using first act instruments. Hopefully they eventually find label support and are able to rerelease it.
Chris has since gained back control of the Flaw site and is vowing to continue to make Flaw Music. There are a few rough demos available for streaming at their myspace.
In several of Flaw's songs, the vocals are reminiscent of a cello. Kinda strange, but AMAZING.

I know why the caged drummer drinks. :(

well that fn sucks!!!!!!! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
If you look at Flaw's myspace page, j.daunt is totally ripping Chris calling him a drunk and a deadbeat even going as far as to comment on Chris' personal life (ex-wife and kids) and I personally do not give a s**t how upset you are with your friend and bandmate you never pull crap like that. I have been following this band since the very beginning and have been their number one fan but now I have to be the one to announce that Flaw is nomore, its over. There is a 0% chance of continuing.
xwv473
I love flaw and will always be a huge fan..... I cant wait for some new stuff although their previous two lp's flippin rock!!!!!!!! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! I cant wait to see these guys again for the 12th time
lead singer kinda sounds like the guy from mudvayne. come to think of it so does this whole band, and thats a damn good thing!!
These guys are the real deal all up in concert they are great!
wlight
Some interesting guitar work, completely smothered over by nu metal tropes. It's a pity, because there's so much potential underneath the predictable chord progressions and auto-tuned vocals.
Why do these bands always get compared to Breaking Benjamin and Tool?
However I left the show that night truly believing that I might have just saw them for the last time. Number one the current line up is not even a shadow of the original lineup,I think Terry is a great guy but his drumming is mediocre at best. Number two is that Chris has got to be more professional if he really wants to salvage the Band. The fight with the Displaced guy is a prime example of why you do not bring your gf or wife on the road. J. Daunt and Chris need to reunite and revive 'FLAW'.
