This is one.of my.favorite pieces of music as well. It was played at our wedding as our wedding waltz. Love love love it!
I do not know the violinist used on this recording, but the pianist is Jacqueline Schwab. She is a wonderful artist. I have had the pleasure of attending a Contra dance event where she was the pianist. Her CDs are wonderful! Check her out on YouTube.

This is one of my favorite pieces of music (but I should add that I have many favorites). It is certainly my favorite in this genre. I first heard it when I watched Ken Burns' The Civil War on PBS in September 1990. I was on an epic road trip through New England at the time, and made sure I was back at my hotel in time to catch each episode. From the first time I heard it, the tune moved me to tears, evoking memories of times past. Whenever I hear it, I'm transported back again. Beautiful.

the selection has a certain allure...alm o s t calling you to bring up a chair, rock back and forth and think about friends that have come and gone!
Ashokan Farewell is a piece of music composed by Jay Ungar in 1982. It has served as a goodnight or farewell waltz at the annual Ashokan Fiddle & Dance Camps, run by the composer and his wife, at the lakefront campus (near Ashokan Reservoir) of the State University of New York at New Paltz. The tune was later used as the title theme of the 1990 PBS television miniseries The Civil War,<1> as well as the 1991 compilation album Songs of the Civil War.
I used to hitchhike through Ashokan, NY many times on my way to the town of Woodstock. The melody is not about the little town of Ashokan, but all the many little towns, North and South, who gave their sons to the Civil War. It's not a song about leaving home, but saying farewell, both for those at home, and the men who left, in the many contexts of that tragic and terrible war.

Ashokan Farewell is one of the simplest and at the same time most evocative tunes I've ever heard. Yes it takes me back to Ken Burns' Civil War that I have on VHS and as a long-time student of that incredible and sad conflict, as well as a North Carolinian, it hits me where I live.

Makes me think if the "Civil War" Series by Ken Burns

Who are the violinist and the guitar player? This is a great rendition, but I don't like most of the other songs on the CD.
This song holds my heart. There, I said it and I'm glad.
