Fastway

One of the most promising '80s supergroups that never was, England's Fastway was never quite able to come to grips with their sonic identity, and despite a promising start, in the end their career was an almost absolute flameout.

Following his acrimonious departure from metal legend Motörhead, guitarist "Fast" Eddie Clarke wasted no time planning his next move with then-recently ousted UFO bassist Pete Way. With veteran drummer Jerry Shirley (ex-Humble Pie) and promising Irish newcomer vocalist Dave King rounding out their lineup, the resulting Fastway was awarded instant supergroup status, even though the mercurial Way decided to quit before the release of their eponymous 1983 debut (going on to form the ill-fated Waysted). As for Fastway, perhaps knowing he would never be able to match the intensity (and distortion) of his previous group, Clarke chose instead to seek a more mainstream hard rock direction with his new band, and indeed the album was very well-received in the U.S., climbing into the Top 40. Encouraged, they quickly returned to the studio with new bassist Charlie McKracken to record 1984's All Fired Up. The album still made it into the American Top 60 despite waning interest from the CBS label and continued nonplussed indifference back in the U.K. and Europe. Looking for a change after losing their rhythm section (replaced by bassist Paul Reid and drummer Alan Connor), Fastway tried to hop the pop-metal bandwagon with 1986's overly slick Waiting for the Roar. Coming off like a second-rate Quiet Riot, the synth-laden album also introduced keyboardist and sometimes-second guitarist Shane Carroll, but rightly fell upon deaf ears. An offer to provide the soundtrack for the heavy metal horror flick Trick or Treat seemed like a perfect shot at redemption, but despite a welcome return to harder-edged fare, the movie was a flop; the album followed suit, and the band soon broke up in dismay.

Clarke would have one final go at it, however. Signing to independent GWR Records (ironically, also Motörhead's label at the time), he drafted an entirely new lineup, featuring vocalist Lea Hart, bassist Paul Gray, and drummer Steve Clarke, for 1988's On Target (which was anything but). Further personnel changes preceded 1990's swan song Bad Bad Girls, which saw Clarke and Hart allegedly backed by old pals Girlschool, working under aliases for contractual reasons. Another resounding flop, the album finally convinced Clarke that it was time to hang up his spurs. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia, Rovi

Saw the movie when it came out and immediately bought the soundtrack.

I wouldn't say the Trick or Treat movie was a flop. I liked it and liked the soundtrack by Fastway.
Saw them with coney hatch & maiden
Erie pa 1983
Incredible show but only like 2000 people there .. Incredible
Never noticed how much his voice sounds sorta like Jack's from great white in trick or treat: ) awesome
Rock and roll...rock in on a midnight take control .....u can't tell me that's not awesome love you fastway
The band name Fastway, Fast Eddie Clarke and Pete Way. Pete would never play on any of their albums. His bass parts were played by Mick Feat on the original recording.
Saw fastwaywhen they opened up for rainbow they were awesome
Say What You Will is their classic!
The most rock & metal stations on Pandora Radio!
Always though dio was the voice, me bein 16 and all i dont know s**t i guess. Still awesome band
if you like fastway then follow me
steventausch e r
Seen them with motorhead 82 in milwaukee wi wisc. Usa.
Pandora... why do you always get this s**t wrong? Initial D Super Eurobeat music is related to Fastaway, not Fastway. That's Fastaway as in the Fastaway that performs Go Beat Crazy.
いにチアーD
They suck. Just another group of mediocre hacks yelling into a microphone and imitating all of the other crappy groups that think this style is cool
I also got into fastway by watching trick or treat
kustombikes1
they still rock
I got into these guys after watching the Trick or Treat movie. It took me several years but I now own that soundtrack on CD.
Sorry people--Easy livin was off the first album not the one shown, gettit right!!
Wrong bio again Pandora. The bio does not match what's playing. You do realize that there's bound to be some overlapping as far as band/group names, but it's pretty easy to tell when something's wrong when you listen to it. I am a little familiar with Fastway from listening to Iron Maiden, Motorhead etc., but the Fastway I'm listening to now is techno from the Initial D anime. That's about as different of music genres as you can get. It can't be that hard to fix this kind of thing.
if fricken big corporate radio had not taken control we would have all the great bands still rocken dam you corporate radio butt heads
Should of went with a different name - too bland.
fastway,boy!
The author of this biography writes like he is living in a foreign country and not the USA. I was living Monterey California and Fastway was well received and most deffinetly was not seen as a Quiet Riot, Please. In 1980-1988 Metal was king in Central and Northern Cal and the movie is a cult classic. How old is this guy 30 something?!

Flogging Molly is a great band with Dave King. Too bad Eddie and Phil will never go back to Motorhead.
I used to have a fastway album! good stuff!
trick or treat, great movie... happy HALLOWEEN !!!
Saw Maiden and Fastway on the same fu#*en stage. Great show

awesome
"Those were the days huh? A few years ago my kid discovered this new band named Flogging Molly. Wow! What a mind blower!" I love that.
I graduated high school in 1983. The same year Fastway appeared. My buddy and I heard "Say What You Will" and saw the video on MTV. He bought the album and we were hooked. One of the best rock albums of my gneration. The first two albums are classic. I bought the CD with the first two albums and its one of the finest 21 songs you'll find on one CD. I could go on and on about Fastway but I'll just say they are aewsome and probably the best band to never "make it." BTW, I do not think Pete Way pla
It should be noted that Charlie McCracken was an old pro that played with Rory Gallagher in Taste.
FASTWAY's "All Fired Up" was supercharged and Waiting for the Roar was pretty good too. Too bad Fastway couldn't keep it up!
Fast Eddie could play the guitar.

I remember buying that first "checkered" album & stapling the album cover on my wall next to Saxon in my bedroom as a teenager. I was just learning how to play Metal on my Guitar and was fascinated with Judas Priest & Iron Maiden... Those were the days huh? A few years ago my kid discovered this new band named Flogging Molly. Wow! What a mind blower!
One of the first "metal" bands I loved. I saw them open for Ratt at Red Rocks in CO when touring for All Fired Up. We left after the first Ratt song, it just wasn't the same. I had all of the David King era albums but lost Waiting for the Roar somewhere. I saw Trick or Treat when it came out, mostly cuz Fastway did the music. Still one of my favorite bands. Believe it or not - there is a radio station in Minnesota that still plays them! SWEEEEET!
my favorite from them is waiting for the roar... maybe their least unknown album
I saw the whole Iron Maiden , Saxon, Fastway tour , in Wyoming, Dave King does not even sound like the same vocalist, but it's true, I seen Flogging Molly, they are a lot of fun. I thought Fastway was kind of wimpy at the time, they are Ok though. Iron Maiden & Saxon were the draw for me.
For those of you who don't know, that "Irish newcomer on vocals," Dave King, is still around, he is the front man for Flogging Molly. If you don't know them, give them a listen. The CDs are very well produced, but if you see them live they F*cking Kick A**!!!! They can be found on Sideone Dummy records. I remember seeing Fastway tour with Iron Maiden and Saxon, of course Saxon Kicked more a** than anyone ever could, but Fatway held their ground. But, yeah, check out Flogging Molly. Christ69

I love Fastway's first album, the song Another Day is my fave.
I enjoy trick or treat almost as much as the debut album. I still try to get the unknowing to listen and even watch the movie. The movie may not have been top quality but the soundtrack rounds it up to well worth the watch.

The first record kicked a**, and I still listen to it regularly...
Trick or treat had some good memorable stuff on it, but yes Fastway was their best. These guys are so very unknown though, few have heard them but their good stuff is just excellent.
Their debut album was smokin' hot, but that was definately their high point.
