Falkenbach is the one-man black metal project of multi-instrumentalist Vratyas Vakyas (formerly guitarist with Crimson Gates), who is based in Düsseldorf, Germany, but reportedly hails from Iceland, and subscribes to the genre's more epic style, rife with keyboards, Viking themes, and folk music tendencies (a possible reason for making up those unconfirmed Icelandic roots). Active under the Falkenbach alias since 1995, when no less than three demos suddenly emerged (Laeknishendr, Skinn Av Sverdhi Sol Valtiva, Asynja), Vakyas recorded two albums in 1996's ...En Their Medh Riki Fara and 1997's ...Magni Blandinn Ok Megintiri, before turning his attention to his record label Skaldic Art Productions. He finally revived Falkenbach in 2003 and actually drafted other musicians (vocalist Tyrann, guitarist Hagalaz, and drummer Bolthorn) to help out with third album Ok Nefna Tysbar Ty, but he was back to his solo ways by the release of its follow-up, Heralding the Fireblade, in 2005. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia, Rovi
any one who says this is not black metal needs to look at one of the founders of the genre Bathory who used paganism and other influences to make his art same as Falkenbach
lol no he's not black metal. viking metal, sure. not even blackened folk. it's only blackened if it's satanic lyrics. not paganism.

To any who have doubts about Falkenbach's black metal connections, go look up "When Gjallarhorn Will Sound" and tell me that's not black metal. But in honesty, I think music exists in a very liquid spectrum, and these "genres" are just a really clumsy attempt to more simply state what we like. It's all relative....enjoying the music itself is what matters....
Blackened Folk/Viking for those who want it pinned down.
@the guy: unless pandora got really stupid, dropkick murphys are definitely on here because that's how I discovered them.
Why does that mean I lose? Seems to me you are merely verifying what I've been saying. I didn't analyze his music by album. It isn't that he combines all these styles into one tho, like you say j7k5m2. Vakyas experiments with each style to greater and lesser degrees with each song.
Bugger this guy is hard to pin down. I'm hearing a bit of doom metal in him, myself.
j7k5m2
old man you lose, he has both a distinct folk metal AND viking style....it all depends on the album and song...on fireblade he mixes both for the first time
Very interesting. The one song I've heard so far definitely had a folk metal feel to it, so I can sort of see why Pandora chose to play that right after Korpiklaani, Alestorm, and Flogging Molly.
Black metal is more about a dark atmosphere than about harsh vocals and fast tempos really. Death metal will always have the harsh vocals and more thrashy guitars.
Guitar riffs isn't the only element of black metal. True, the tempos are slower and there aren't double kick drums and so on. But it has the shrieking vocals, and unconventional song structure. The mood of the music is definitely black in orientation. There are also may solo artists. When they tour they find backup members. NIN is essentially a solo act.
How exactly did they link this to Flogging Molly, Flatfoot 56, the Pogues, and the Dropkick Murphy's, etc? Pandora employees must be on drugs. Regardless, this guy is f**king amazing!

I'm not criticizing the music, I'm criticizing the Pandora Bio.
