The Faces

When Steve Marriott left the Small Faces in 1969, the three remaining members brought in guitarist Ron Wood and lead singer Rod Stewart to complete the lineup and changed their name to the Faces, which was only appropriate since the group now only slightly resembled the mod-pop group of the past. Instead, the Faces were a rough, sloppy rock & roll band, able to pound out a rocker like "Had Me a Real Good Time," a blues ballad like "Tell Everyone," or a folk number like "Richmond" all in one album. Stewart, already becoming a star in his own right, let himself go wild with the Faces, tearing through covers and originals with abandon. While his voice didn't have the power of Stewart, bassist Ronnie Lane's songs were equally as impressive and eclectic. Wood's rhythm guitar had a warm, fat tone that was as influential and driving as Keith Richards' style.

Notorious for their hard-partying, boozy tours and ragged concerts, the Faces lived the rock & roll lifestyle to the extreme. When Stewart's solo career became more successful than the Faces, the band slowly became subservient to his personality; after their final studio album, Ooh La La, in 1973, Lane left the band. After a tour in 1974, the band called it quits. Wood joined the Rolling Stones, drummer Kenny Jones eventually became part of the Who, and keyboardist Ian McLagan became a sought-after supporting musician; Stewart became a superstar, although he never matched the simple charm of the Faces.

While they were together, the Faces never sold that many records and were never considered as important as the Stones, yet their music has proven extremely influential over the years. Many punk rockers in the late '70s learned how to play their instruments by listening to Faces records; in the '80s and '90s, guitar rock bands from the Replacements to the Black Crowes took their cue from the Faces as much as the Stones. Their reckless, loose, and joyous spirit stayed alive in much of the best rock & roll of the subsequent decades.

Lane was diganosed with multiple sclerosis in the 1970s but continued to work. He relocated to Austin, Texas in the 1980s and worked until the disease claimed his life in 1997.

MacLagan also relocated to Austin, where he became an integral part of the city's vibrant music scene. In addition to leading his own group, the Bump Band, he collaborated with musicians--well known and obscure--in recording sessions and on the stage. He suffered a stroke on December 2, 2014, and passed away a day later. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Ooh La La is my favorite Rod Stewart song-the lyrics are so profound (for boys mostly) but they apply to everyone because the themes are universal. Wisdom of age vs. the strength & vigor of youth.

Ronnie Wood sings Ooh La La, so lets give him some Love for a Beautiful song

When Rod left to become a Pop Princess and Ronny Wood decided to play Satisfaction for the rest of his life we lost a great Rock band. Sloppy is what the press at the time called them, to me they were Rock and Roll not overproduced pop.

One of the greatest songs ever wrote

Very awesome band Faces I saw them 5 different times they were over the top fun 4 times but they could get a little too drunk occasionally . Wish they could still be playing but they were magic for a few years. Thank God.

The Faces are what rock could be if it were just about the joy of playing good songs and having a good time.

I was just thinking adding the faces to my station, that's crazy.

Ronnie Lane was the heart and soul of this band. this is why the band collapsed after he left. He did some great music with Slim Chance in the 70's after he left; worth checking out

One of the greatest live bands ever but didn't split up until '75

The Faces were one of THE best bands of their time and SO under-apprec i a t e d , in my opinion. Rod Stewart has NEVER, and I mean NEVER, sounded better than he did then. I could listen to the Faces for DAYS on end and never tire.

Got a pic of Woody from Chicago Stadium about '74. Rod is an old bag lady now but he was a sight to behold. Folk, Celtic, acoustic, and rockers ... they had a bar right on stage. Ronnie, Eod and McLagan were all top performers ... you didn't know who to watch. And Rod used to have this wonderful, boyish sense of humor that somehow had the life beat out of it when he recorded Atlantic Crossing. What a betrayal.

wow this is the first Faces song I've ever heard. boy did these guys mess up by breaking up. I dont care for any of the bands they all went too. but as a group they are incredible.

Hey @nullvalue: Did you know that Tom Verlaine is from Delaware?... . . . . . . . . . . . . A h , The Faces, back when Rod Stewart did good music prior to turning into a p**sy in the late 70's.

Many punk rockers in the late '70s learned how to play their instruments by listening to Faces records; - this statement from the Bio is so true.. When I first heard Ooh La La I thought something by Television.

Didn't realize what a big influence these guys were on me until years later, when a girlfriend bought me their anthology on CD. After listening to it I realized I had stolen many more chops from Ron than Keefer!

I was a photographer in San Fransisco and have the original pix of the faces concert at the Cow Palace in 1970. Stood right in front of the stage and marveled at the new singer, Rod Stewart. Have seen him dozens of times since them but never a better grittier performance than with THE FACES.

My friend Dave Fuller and I saw the Faces in England many times. All I can say they had concerts and what raw rock it was. Brilliant !!

I used to go see the Faces in Chicago, at the Syndrome...i f I remember correctly. for a short while, they played there quite a few times. Must have been 1970 or so. A great band to see live.

thanks pandora and all the support listed. Another band brought to my attention I will surely pursue!

I'm thankful I saw this band play live several times. They were really, really that good plus a lot of fun to watch. A Nod is as Good as a Wink..to a Blind Horse is now 40 years old. I think it is one of the greatest records of all time. I still have my original copy with the poster of "X-Rated" tour photos inside! The title was a "catch phrase" from Ron Lanes dad. My dad had a few of those, too.

next to John Lennon, Rod Stewart has the second best rock and roll voice ever. Second to John Lennon is very high praise.
