Extreme

Extreme's music was never easy to classify, since it rarely confined itself to heavy metal, hard rock, or pop. The Massachusetts-based band formed in 1985; guitarist Nuno Bettencourt had already played in a local band with bassist Pat Badger, while singer Gary Cherone fronted his own group with drummer Paul Geary. The two bands eventually merged, and Cherone and Bettencourt formed a songwriting partnership that would soon place Extreme atop the Billboard charts, if only for a short period.

Coupling the technical proficiency of Bettencourt's guitar with a funky rhythmic base, the band issued a self-titled debut album in 1989. It peaked at number 80 -- a modest showing for a new, unseasoned band -- and the song "Play with Me" was used to orchestrate the chase scene during Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure. Extreme had begun to earn respect in the heavy metal world, but it wasn't until the arrival of the band's follow-up effort, Pornograffitti (particularly the the Everly Brothers-style acoustic ballad "More Than Words"), that a mainstream audience latched onto the group's sound. "More Than Words" became a number one hit, while its follow-up single, an acoustic-based pop/rocker named "Hole Hearted," hit number four. Extreme were now one of the most popular acts in the pop-metal genre, but the looming arrival of grunge music -- not to mention the band's own shifting tastes -- combined to make Extreme's reign relatively short-lived.

The band's third album, III Sides to Every Story, was an ambitious effort whose sales (while strong at first) couldn't match those of Pornograffitti. Geary left the lineup soon after, seeking a career in music business instead, and a revised version of the band (featuring the percussion of Mike Mangini, formerly of Annihilator) returned in 1995 with Waiting for the Punchline. It, too, suffered from a lack of sales. Accordingly, Extreme's bandmates announced their breakup the following year. Bettencourt went on to launch a solo career and issued the Schizophonic album in 1997; he then released two additional albums with his band Mourning Widows. Meanwhile, Cherone enjoyed a brief stint as the vocalist for Van Halen. His one album with the band, 1998's Van Halen III, was slammed by critics and fans alike, resulting in poor sales and Cherone's speedy exit.

A 13-track best-of collection named An Accidental Collision of Atoms kept Extreme's legacy alive in 2000, and the band quietly reunited in 2004 for a small series of shows. The reunion gigs continued into 2008, when a new album, Saudades de Rock, marked the group's first batch of new material in 13 years. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine & Andrew Leahey, Rovi

I saw Extreme at a club in Somerville, MA just before they got popular (at least outside New England). I was actually there helping setup and takedown one of the opening bands equipment. They were an amazing club band. Nuno f**king rocked. After the show Extreme invited us all to a house (can't remember who's). Got to hang with Extreme for awhile and remember talking guitar and drinking beers with Nuno. Was a night I will always remember as it was that following summer they got huge.
Extreme is only good to people who analyze music and appreciate meaningful lyrics that can also tell a story...
Pornograffit i greatest rock album ever made! Greatest guitarist on fkn planet
I know a bunch of kid egos may this song play in their honor
Dis song all for you bbycakes u gotta here the words so beautiful my love
Bettencourt is one the most underrated guitarists ever. He deserves to be up there with the best of the best. And Extreme's music as a whole was very cool and rich in rhythm and style. I own their first 3 albums and have worn them out.
They sound like all the other pretentious metal howlers of the 80's. Boring and excessive.
Extreme has some hauntingly beautiful songs.
I'm an old woman! And I continue to love their songs!
Don't read this because it actually works. You will be kissed on the nearest possible Friday by the love of your life. Tomorrow will be best day of your life. However if you don't post this you will die in 2 days. Now you've started reading this don't stop. This is so scary. Post this on at least 5 songs in 143 minutes. When done press f6 and your lover's name will come up on the screen. This is so scary because it actually works. F6
They suck big time. Screaming is not singing. No talent at all.
I cannot believe how ultra-wanky these cox are, it's great!! Schlock on.

Such an under-rated band; the talent is immense! I saw them open for Winger in Gainesville way back and they blew the crowd away. Half of the audience walked out when they realized Kip Winger was lip-synching ! Get the Funk Out was so fun to work out to on the stair climber. Great band - wish they would get back together.
love this song. love extreme. my third favorite band next to guns n roses number one and slashes snake pit number two
3 Sides To Every Story was a very underrated album.
I love everything about this song! So Awesome!
I liked Extreme back in the day, now after revisiting them...they were extremely underrated.

Pornograffit t i is a killer album......I listened to it continually. I bought the CD when I got married in 1991 and listened to it on our honeymoon drive to Las Vegas. Earlier that year I met Nuno at the NAMM show in Anahiem. Cool dude and great sense of humor. Playing in Rhiana's band doesn't do him justice these days.
One of the GREATEST bands ever !!! great musicians and song writing.
rebootkz
why there is no 《III Sides Of Every Story》 -- 1992 album ?
hey...I love Extreme as much as anyone but Van Halen and Mr. Big are both great bands with great musicians in them.
What the Hell? Pandora lists similar artists for Extreme as: Van Halen, Mr. Big, Def Leppard, & Living Colour. I DON'T THINK SO!! Maybe Living Colour, but still..... those bands can only wish they had the same level of talent as Extreme. Period *eod* (end of discussion).

the more than words song is the only one i know by these guys i have no idea what else they do but you know this is more than enough for me
Hard rock in it's prime! Between these guys and Van Halen, I'm set for life!

my all time favorite band! Extreme-ly talented musicians. Gary has one of the best vocal ranges i have ever heard. Kind of cool I found out that my husband actually lived down the street from Nuno when they were kids in the Azores! I could write a book about what amazing musicians they are and how much I love them, but any fan of theirs knows what I am talking about. Thanks guys for some great times at concerts!

Saw these guys open for Bon Jovi back in the early 90s and they were great. Tight harmonies and solid musicians. Plus, Gary seems like a great guy. He's a frequent guest with the Manchester/P o r t s m o u t h , NH radio station WHEB's Morning Buzz, always auctioning or raffling off something for charity. Very cool stuff. Heard his son's a pretty awesome guitarist, too.
Extreme is best sounding groups from the 80's hair bands.
Nuno is a awsome guitarist

Wish Pandora would get Nuno's solo stuff on here.
What a great underrated band they are. Although they are mostly known for acoustic songs, their harder songs are worth listening too and I'm sure they have really good live shows. I think it's worth adding them to your Pandora page, even if you are not familiar with their songs besides More Than Words, Hole Hearted, and Play With Me, which is on Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80s

I saw them with King's X on the new album tour and I agree, they were great. Just as tight as they were back in the day. Nuno was incredible. He always amazes me. He's a virtuoso that doesn't just stand there and noodle. He f*cking rocks!
ozmotron
Such fun stuff to listen to. But please gimme speed and funk and fun lyrics, not acoustic ballads and mush.
funny how songs can stand the test of time. i am a product of the 80's and I LOVE "more than words" just from hearing it on the local radio.
So lame. It should be illegal to be this lame.

Been a fan since 1989. I was taken by this band from the minute I pushed play. So much deeper & more viable than all the bands they got undeservingl y categorized with – just hands down better. Extreme is one of my all time favs & and is responsible for some of the most important music in my life. Finally got to see them in 2008 with another one of my all time favs King's X. Talk about a dream come true. Extreme put on the very best show I've ever seen. Seriously.
I agree 100% with BE Nelson, Nuno is amazing and even more amazing live.
Nuno Bettencourt is the one of the most underated guitarist on the planet. He rocks, He funks, He shreds. There is nothing this man can not do on six strings!

Met Gary Cherone, nicest guy!
We Always like this band...very underated.
Glad they are back together, the new album is just as good as their older stuff.
Nuno's freaking insane!
Saw them in August at House of Blues. Best. Show. Ever. They still rock.
The new CD Saudades de Rock is AWESOME!! Everyone should pick it up if you like Extreme!!
Hopefully someone updates this profile...th e y released a new album on 8/12/2008. Stylisticall y , it's somewhere between their debut and 'Waiting For The Punchline'. Funky riffs all over the place. Strongly recommended!
"More Than Words" was pretty much the beginning of the end for them, too bad.
