Etta Jones

An excellent singer who is always worth hearing, Etta Jones grew up in New York and at 16, toured with Buddy Johnson. She debuted on record with Barney Bigard's pickup band (1944) for Black & White, singing four Leonard Feather songs, three of which (including "Evil Gal Blues") were hits for Dinah Washington. She recorded other songs during 1946-1947 for RCA and worked with Earl Hines (1949-1952). Jones' version of "Don't Go to Strangers" (1960) was a hit and she made many albums for Prestige during 1960-1965. Jones toured Japan with Art Blakey (1970), but was largely off record during 1966-1975. However, starting in 1976, Etta Jones (an appealing interpreter of standards, ballads, and blues) began recording regularly for Muse, often with the fine tenor saxophonist Houston Person. She died from complications of cancer on October 16, 2001, the day her last album, Etta Jones Sings Lady Day, was released. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi

Hi
Etta is my secret spot. She is so versatile
so beautiful
Bluesology. I can relate. This is cool
My first introduction to this singer.....b e a u t i f u l vocals.
I had the pleasure of meeting Etta backstage before a show she did with Houston Person in Rochester, NY at the School of the Arts. She reminded me of my mom when she was in her later years. Very happy and gracious and pleasant. She sounded great and made a great team with Houston and his band. We are fortunate to have had such a fine lady singing beautifully for us for so long. When I listen to her recordings, I feel her spirit in the music and it makes me very happy.
The voice is timeless

DID LITTLE WILLIE JOHN SING AT LAST? BACK IN THE DAY.
calattorney6
Hey Connie. It was Etta James that sang At Last, not Etta Jones.
Etta started out as one of the Dandridge Sisters with Dorothy & Vivian Dandridge.
No one can ever sing At last the way she she did . It is my happy ending song that is finally comming true at last

Don't know how I missed this wonderful voice...gues s I am slipping, but love her voice
Etta Jones, missed out on seeing her perform, but love listening to her recordings. Took a Jazz Cruise several years back and Houston Person was performing. Folks on the cruise talked wonderfully about he and Ms. Jones...ever y o n e misses her. 2011
Etta James can always make me feel like good.
sorry etta james was the substance abuser and etta jones was not ...etta james is ill these days..she was a good woman and singer who fell victim to the nonsense and degradation of drugs. and I think by the time she knew it was making her sick it was too late. she has been ill off an on for years.
I loved all these comments...t h e 2 etta's were/are legends..one was jazz and one was r&b/rock&rol l / b l u e s and etta james was not a substance abuser! she and houston were clean jazz people. He is still touring at age 80 I think!
yeah..me too!
love the lady
A underrated talent. Fine indeed.

Etta Jones and Houston Person can't get any better not only the music but the stage present, a duo, a trio, a quartet, and everybody was well-dressed even in the audience miss those days.

triflin67401
and if you look at her younger pictures, you can see she was a gorgeous woman, even when standing next to dorothy dandridge! (and THAT's saying something!)
triflin67401
i prefer etta jones over james. they are such different in their vocalities and stylings. but the last names are a bit similar so i can see how there would be some amount of confusion.
How many times have the two Etta's been confused for one another? My husband and I went to a club several years ago, preparing to hear "At Last". It wasn't until we walked in and saw a poster of Etta Jones, that we realized our mistake. Fortunately, we enjoyed learning about the talents of Etta Jones.

another great Space-ologis t . shirley horn in her later years is one as well. what they do between the notes carries such intelligence , grace, and wisdom.

Etta James is great, without question, BUT Etta JONES is SUBLIME!! We are talking apples and oranges here.
This is Etta Jones not Etta James-they are two different people.
Darlins, Its Etta James not Jones.....:)
Please Susan don't sigh, why, because I remember Etta Jones from places like Memory Lane located on the corner of Santa Barbra& Arlington in Los Angeles,CA. See Susan I used to work their and"Marty's on the hill" which was not far from the there. All of this happen during 1962-1972.Et t a Jones&Etta james are of different personage. Etta James was quite popular at a place called'The Parisian Room" located on the corner of Washington& Crenshaw during the same period of time provided Ivsc87 is st
I didn't realize Etta had left us. I used to go to clubs in New Jersey and watch her and Houston Person perform. I can't remember the name of the club. It was in Patterson and was the name of the owner. He was a sweetheart. Also, Michael Urbaniak, Zoot Sims, Bucky Pizzarelli and a plethora of other great jazz musicians. I used to ask them for their autograph. Etta and Houston also played in Cliffside Park in a club that isn't there anymore. By the way, this was in the late 70's. Sigh.... Memory
Etta JONES and Etta JAMES are two different people! This is right!
Her name is Etta JAMES _ Not Jones
Her voice is full of wisdom, and life lived, times remembered, things unsaid. She carries the moment with each inflection, and pause with a voice pure and true.
