Composer Erich Wolfgang Korngold (1897-1957) was a child prodigy considered to be on the level of Mozart and Mendelssohn. His early career reflected that promise and he became highly successful in many genres, although he is mostly remembered for opera, primarily Die tote Stadt, which continues to be performed regularly. His career was sidetracked when he fled to California in 1938 to escape the Nazis. He was renowned as a composer of film scores, including Captain Blood, The Sea Hawk, and Of Human Bondage, but he was never able to return successfully to the world of opera and concert music. ~ Stephen Eddins, Rovi
