A melodic power/death/folk metal band delving in Viking legends for lyrical inspiration, Helsinki, Finland's Ensiferum had to continually coexist with various simultaneous metal projects undertaken by its members. Founded in 1995 by guitarist Markus Toivonen, Ensiferum worked up a number of demo tapes before finally attracting the attention of Finland's powerhouse metal label, Spinefarm, which released their eponymous debut in 2001. The sophomore Iron followed in 2004, and both albums featured vocalist Jari Mäenpää, bassist Jukka-Pekka Miettinen, keyboardist Meiju Enho, drummer Oliver Fokin, and of course Toivonen. Many of these were active in black/dark metal act Arthemesia at the same time, and Mäenpää subsequently announced his departure to start a new band called Wintersun. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia, Rovi
Willow you are a poser. I checked out your stations and all you listen to is corporate music so Get The F**k Out you b**ch. Suck the Suits Dicks like you have been.
From a dark hole in the ground. The aura of which is looking glass to that which we all recognize as our universe. There is an ugly, knotted, bloody, leafless tree at the center which has skeletal phalanges of branches reaching out to spread disease in our reality to which we all know and love. Like Voldomort, this hideous tree has been quenched of life repeatedly, only to return again and again with malice in its bleeding, shriveled heart.
Awesome band... Love their version of Battery (Metallica) at the end of Iron. Also, check out Korpiklaani, Eluveitie, and Tyr. This is NOT Children of Bodom - this is way better! Much more musical, yet still intense.
My favorite Albums by them are "Ensiferum", "Victory Songs", and "From Afar". Their self titled is one of my best albums, and I can't wait till they make a new one.
Ha! Bodom... Bodom is beat! Anyway, if you guys like Ensiferum, then im gonna let you all in on a little secret. Pandora doesnt have the band "Equilibrium" on file. They are German epic folk metal... hahaha, go figure? Get the album "Sagas". You woulnt be disappointed...

If you think they are bodom you are f**king stupid a lul...
hey, good news for those of you who like wintersun, new album to be coming out, from what i've read though, it may be a while untill it's released because of delays, but it is all recorded and tracked.
I think Jari did well in leaving to start Wintersun... the tone of Ensiferum has changed, it's more "light" and accessible Viking Metal, but still complex in its own regard. They haven't sold out in one bit, still a great band, but one cannot deny Jari's god-like Metal songwriting.
Why do people feel the need to praise Godsmack in totally unrelated pages? (I hate Godsmack by the way). On an actual related note, these guys are cool, I like them. They are like In Extremo.

People, I am pleased to report that they were pretty good! They wore kilts and had Viking-themed stage props, like shields. The music was good, too.

Hmm. I'm going to see Ensiferum live tonight. I like that Deathbringer from the Sky song; will have to check them out some more. I really meant more to see Hypocrisy, but they had to cancel. Visa and immigration issues.
@Moridin: Yeah, it just depends on the listener. Fans of power metal tend to lean more towards Turisas, while death and black metal fans usually lean towards Eluveitie.
Screaming instead of singing will generally get a thumbs down from me, unless it's in very small doses in an otherwise scream free song, or if it's counterbalanced by the rest of the piece being generally awesome - Ensiferum has landed squarely into the latter category. Very interesting.

I've had the pleasure of seeing Ensiferum a few times now, and they blow me away every time. Awesome band with tons of energy that knows how to have fun, and not a silly breakdown in sight. xD
