Emily Remler

Emily Remler's death at age 32 from a heart attack (certainly not helped by her frequent use of heroin) was a shock to the jazz world, and a sad waste. She was just beginning to emerge from the Wes Montgomery influence and develop her own voice. Remler began playing guitar when she was ten, attended Berklee (1976-1979), and recorded as a leader for the first time in 1980. She played with the L.A. version of the show Sophisticated Ladies (1981-1982) and in 1985 had a duo with Larry Coryell, but otherwise mostly worked as a leader with her own small groups. After recording bop-oriented dates for Concord, she had a contemporary set for Justice, and toured with David Benoit before her sudden death. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi

Just discovered this beautiful talent. So sad to know she is no longer with us, but she left something magical behind.

Never heard of Emily Remler before, but that never means anything. This is great!

Damn, and I just discovered her from her tutorials...

I see several comments about the sad loss, but it's all a joy spring to me. I can't be sad for the loss. Just going to celebrate the great music. I never saw her play but know several folks that did. Friends that own a jazz club say she was humble, down to earth, and much better in person than she is on her brilliant recordings. Even before she recorded this is me, you could hear her unique sound. She blended the best of Wes, Martino and Ellis into her own mix.

Thanks to Jack C. Feldman for telling us about Emily's playing on the David Benoit album! Does anyone know of any other gigs sha played on as a "side man"? Emily is still with us in her beautiful music! Love to her, always.

So smooth, bouncy yet serene. RIP to one of the many taken way too soon by drugs.

Her recording of Softly As In A Morning Sunrise with pianist Hank Jones is a classic, straight-ahe a d jazz track as was work she did with David Benoit on an album called Waiting For Spring. A remarkable talent lost way, way too soon....

I met Emily in St. Louis at the Just Jazz lounge at the Majestic Hotel, months before her death. We chatted briefly about Montgomery and Metheny. Wow, what an awesome lady and a great loss!

She was so gifted. It's hard to listen to her and not think about how much great music will never be made.
