Elbow

Injecting a wider range of emotions into their music than most of their guitar-based British peers, Elbow have been known to refer to their orchestral, grandiose sound as "prog without the solos." The members of the band -- vocalist Guy Garvey, drummer Richard Jupp, organist Craig Potter, guitarist Mark Potter, and bassist Pete Turner -- met during the early '90s while attending college in Bury. After moving several miles south to Manchester proper, the band went through a couple of developmental stages before attracting the interest of Island Records, which signed the group in 1998.

Island was bought out by Universal several months later, though, and Elbow found themselves dropped from the label as a result. After a partnership with EMI also dissolved, the guys linked up with local independent label Uglyman and released two EPs, Newborn and Any Day Now. The acclaimed EPs gained the band a contract with V2, which released 2001's equally tipped Asleep in the Back. The record was short-listed as a nominee for 2001's Mercury Prize and was issued in the States in early 2002.

Cast of Thousands, which appeared in 2004, proved to be a strong, critically acclaimed follow-up. Leaders of the Free World, inspired by political events and behavior in the media, was released in fall 2005, with The Seldom Seen Kid following in 2008. Although all three of Elbow's past albums had enjoyed significant popularity in the U.K., The Seldom Seen Kid was the band's first album to go multi-platinum, eventually selling over one million copies and winning the 2008 Mercury Prize. Writing sessions for a new album began in 2010, and Build a Rocket Boys! was released one year later, followed in 2012 by Dead in the Boot, a collection of B-sides and non-album cuts.

That summer, not only did Elbow's ambitious, especially written track "First Steps" serve as the theme to the BBC's coverage of the London Olympics, but the band also played two songs at the closing ceremony of the games, which helped to further bolster sales of their back catalog. Recording sessions for a sixth studio album -- eventually titled The Take Off and Landing of Everything -- took place at Peter Gabriel's Real World Studios in Wiltshire in late 2012 and were completed in their own Salford studio the following year. Following the January release of the single "New York Morning," the album appeared to strong reviews in March 2014 and became their first album to debut at the top of the U.K. charts. ~ Andy Kellman, Rovi

It's not very often that I can feel that kind of passion from the musicians in a band. They put their heart and soul into every note.

I know comparisons are in the ear of the beholder, but 'Puncture Repair' really sounds like Peter Gabriel. I guess it's that spare, somewhat scratchy voice and solo piano. Very much like Elbow.
@ house of blues, chicago may 19th...!
saw them in Chicago... unforgettabl e . . . . . . such haunting melodies.... what romantics they are!
His voice sings all of my tears and the sweetness of life...

Been following them since the EP days and finally saw them in Sydney about a year ago. There's not much better music in the world than this.

I found a band on Pandora, and I was able to get into contact with them. We would recommend music back and forth, and they recommended The Seldom Seen Kid album. I liked it but didn't love it. I found out they were playing the US, and a friend was going to drive 8 hours to see them, and I offered to go since I knew who they were. Seeing/heari n g them live has turned me into a fan for the rest of my life! So glad I have Elbow in my life!
sydski2
Elbow are just the best. Love them.
elbow is amazing...i have listened for a long time and still love this music...seen them in concert and would say that they stand out as one of the best...songs are authentic and relate to me in profound ways...my all time fav is scats of black and whites...i cry every time i hear it
I love this band! I discovered them just a few years ago when they were on tour with U2 in Europe. Since then I have been telling music lovers in the US to give them a listen! They sound just as good live as they do on their albums! Starlings and On a Day Like This are standouts on Seldom Seen Kid. Also love I've Got Your Number from Cast of Thousands!
I can only think of a few bands that have such a great sense of space in music as these guys. Elbow displays how mulitple simple arrangments on top of one another can create complex, yet beautiful compositions . Epic.
The vocals remind me a lot of Catherine Wheel, not that that's a bad thing.

The live BBC Radio version of The Seldom Seen Kid is just amazing. Full backing orchestra and choir, and the arrangements are breathtaking . It's available in a double pack with a CD and a DVD with 5.1 surround sound. I bought it and it is one of my all time favorites. Check it out.

I remember buying their debut album long ago. I don't remember how I heard of them, sometimes my coolness just leads me to do cool things.
I learned about Elbow as they were mentioned in a few of the great Inspector John Mabus detective novels by Ian Rankin, himself a noted punk rocker from the 80's. (Also learned alot about Edinburgh and scotch in those novels.) Very good stuff.
How have I not heard of these guys!?
I am with everyone here on this page. Elbow will be the influence of so many bands in about 10-15 years. Legendary.
the is a landmark band ... to be sure they will be talking about this band for decades. amazing musicians. Unforgetable lyrics , music , moods they stay under your skin and grow.
I love that mix of Starlings. It screws with your expectations and is slightly upsetting. Excellent.

Love the band and SSK especially, but on Starlings, I wish the mix hadn't gone so heavy on the keyboard flourishes.. . . . . . w a a a a a y too loud.
this will be for me the group of the decade for me. Never been so moved by a musical presence like Elbow.
Have loved this band since 2002. They keep getting better with each album. Saw them live in April 2008 in NYC-best $25 ever spent! They were amazing live.

vocals reminded me of Peter Gabriel when I first heard them; great sound
Saw them open for Coldplay, and although I didn't appreciate them then, I've come to realize that they are extremely underrated. The Seldom Seen Kid is quite frankly one of the best albums I've ever heard, with Grounds For Divorce and The Bones of You being some of my favorite songs.
What an amazing group - they should be MAJOR stars worldwide because their sound is soooo big! Love listening to them!
koamileli2
KEXP in Seattle plays them now and again. This band is UNDERRATED. The most dynamic and amazing sound to ever permeate my ears. If a friend of mine hadn't visited London, I wouldn't be enjoying them today.
ginarclark
Elbow should be HUGE in the United States. KCRW in Los Angeles is the only station I know of that is playing their music. Fantastic lyrics.
kek014
opened for cold play - loved them
bowe2002
Cast of Thousands is one of my all-time favorite albums... but they're all amazing. This is the most underrated band around.
Check out there live session on KCRW.com. It is awesome. Its all acoustic and the renditions are incredible.
It's like if Peter Gabriel reincarnated into twin sons, Blue October in the States, and Elbo in the UK... Just giving proper respect to the seeds of great music...

Remarkable music...

I love their music you can play it over and over again without getting bored

Ashamed to say I'd never heard of Elbow before last night's Coldplay concert in Raleigh, NC. I'm SO glad I didn't miss Elbow's performance. Amazing!
selly1976
lead singer totally sounds like the lead singer of Super Furry Animals. Another great band.
Awesome...dr e a m y . . . l o v e l y !
Truly, truly remarkable. The lyrics and the sound are just far beyond anything else we're hearing out there.
sgray524
intelligent lyrics and emotional depth wrapped in sound that eminates from dreams
Elbow is amazing, they came to the US last year, I didn't get to go though *cries*
tpmarczak
Opening for Coldplay on US tour this summer.

I wish they would considering touring in the US. I absolutely love the lyrical beauty of this band! Please come to us...
Caught them on an episode of Live at Abbey Road Studio on the Sundance Channel and imediately bought the Seldom Seen Kid. Great music.
This is one of the most underrated bands on the planet. For some reasons, Americans aren't catching on...yet
been a fan of elbow since asleep in the back. though unfortunatly have yet to see them in concert :/ seldom seen kid is a fantastic album.
I've just discovered Elbow and I have to say they're quickly becoming a favorite. They're fantastic.
