Egg (70s)

An overlooked classical rock trio that had both the talent and sound of Emerson, Lake, and Palmer without the bombast or success, Egg -- comprised of organist Dave Stewart (not the one in the Eurythmics), bassist/vocalist Mont Campbell, and Clive Brooks -- formed in July, 1968 from the ashes of Uriel/Arzachel after their guitarist, Steve Hillage left to study philosophy at the University of Kent. The band never made it on a major scale, as their music was too grandiose and challenging to garner a mainstream audience. It's a shame, because Campbell had a powerful set of vocal cords, and the group WAS capable of composing shorter, finely crafted melodies.

An early single "Seven Is a Jolly Good Time" b/w "We Are All Princes" received modest airplay on the BBC's venerable John Peel Show. The group then proceeded to record two albums, Egg and The Polite Force, both dominated by Stewart's organ, then broke up after Stewart joined the Canterbury all-star group Hatfield and the North. The Civil Surface is a reunion album that came out in late '74. Stewart currently works with singer Barbara Gaskin on periodic new age projects. Campbell had a brief spell with the first version of National Health, and Brooks drummed for a fortnight with the Groundhogs, but their current activities are unknown. ~ Peter Kurtz, Rovi

Thanks Pandora! I would have never discovered Egg if it weren't for you!
That is not the cover of the first Egg album. That is the cover of another band's album.
Great track.
Killer band and a pity they never got legs... That seems to be what Prog is about though... Like those who enjoy obscure literature we enjoy groups like Egg, VDGG, Camel, Triumvirate et al. gravitate toward the lesser known. I don't know whether it's our smarmy natures or it's just better stuff and everyone else is not too bright... I will say it's the latter... : )
This is definately GREAT music even though most people consider it (pardon the pun) HIGH BROW as I believe they intended for listeners to be in an altered state of consciousnes s . W h i c h I would of been had I heard it years ago but still appreciate great music today.Bach would have approved ,I know he would.
love it

great music, wish I had heard them sooner too.
I am ELP fan and this is the first time I've heard EGG..sounds good!!!!.. fyi..most of ELPs earlier extended works were written as solo piano pieces...

Egg was one of those third-tier UK prog groups you NEVER heard in the US. Fruup, Greenslade, Curved Air.. It's great to finally hear all this stuff!
Take a Visit to Newport Hospital and you'll be hooked EGGs wonderful tune
I love EGG's The Polite Force cd Best
EGG is one of the best bands ever.. to me they are better than ELP they were too commercial
Hey B, that was some sound reasoning. This confirms the multimention a l insight of prog diehards. Pandora's really opened my eyes to cutting edge fringe bands.
Oh I dig, B, I dig.
This is why I don't like normal people. Normal people don't get music like Egg ("too grandiose and challenging to garner a mainstream audience"), so it never gets popular. That means that the awesome people (like you, if you're reading this) have to dig harder to find awesome music. Thanks, Pandora, for playing bands like Egg!
Terrific stuff!! I pride myself on being familiar with most prog rock bands, even the more obscure stuff. Egg is new to me. I will be listening more for them.
eggz!!
Biography mentioned Dave Stewart, but not KHAN with Steve Hillage. Despite some lame reviews I read, this one LP band was quite good. Still get goose bumps when I hear their songs.
People try and recreate this stuff now a days but nothing can beat the original retro electonic, 2 Thumbs-up
This is why Pandora is a great idea: Egg (70s). These guys play some pretty groovy stuff. What an interesting find!
Wow, nice find. Enjoyable music.
I have looked for this one on the web but I can't seem to find it, if anybody might know where to find "The Civil Surface", "Egg (70s)" please e-mail me, Thanks!!!
Enjoyable! What a force for three members! Thanks Pandora! Trying to find their material on E-Bay!.
Eggsactly.

Egg is great but very hard to find in record stores. Some stuff can still be ordered. I'd love to hear live bootlegs of this band.

Egg be the stuff! One of my finest Pandora.com discoveries. No yolk.
