The German neo-classical metal band Edguy features Tobias Sammet on vocals and bass, Jens Ludwig and Dirk Sauer on guitar, and Felix Bohnke. They released their first album, Kingdom of Madness, in 1997, when all members were still in their teens. This album is good, but inconsistent. In 1998, their second album, Vain Glory Opera, took a big step forward, featuring much better and more consistent songwriting. 1999's Theater of Salvation is the band's first great album. It has consistently great songs, better vocals, and lusher production. Tobias Exxel was added on bass for the Theater of Salvation album. ~ David White, Rovi
@gnightwish: Coming from somebody who isn't a musician (probably)? Do you have any idea how hard it is to make songs like this? The vocals are incredible, guitar is hard and dynamic, and there is an excellent correlation between drums and bass. The whole arrangement is complete genius. Honestly, I would expect you to be a better judge of musical quality, seeing as how Nightwish is just as good. Gnightwish, I suggest you hold your tongue until you get more musical knowledge under your belt.
I got first comment? With a band that's as good as Edguy, that's strange...

my favorite band of all time love every song they have ever made i've got every one of there albums don't diss the band bro you should also try listening to gamma ray and hammerfall
Yup, something about his voice turns me off too. But when he's singing for Avantasia it doesn't bother me nearly as much. I can't figure out why.

I really want to like this band. I really do. However, it frequently sounds like Tobias Sammett is off key or something. Maybe it's the timbre of his voice that just puts me off. I can't discount the quality of the music and songwriting though. Good stuff.

anybody else think the singer sounds almost exactly like bruce dickinson?
I recently bought their live DVD but it was a let-down. Nearly all the songs were newer "okay" songs and I think there was only one or two fan-favorites on there. +1 to seeing a live performance of "Avantasia" though!
they is a huge, heavy influence from iron maiden in this band, as there are in a lot of other european power metal acts. it's not just vocally, and tobias sounds A LOT like dickinson. it's the song structures, chorus styles, and interplay of the twin guitars. if you can't hear that i am completely shocked. that being said, they are unique in their own right and also very, very good.
@Vwimer - I saw Seven Kingdoms open for Blind Guardian in Denver - they were extremely talented and I enjoyed their songs. I am not a big fan of female vocals over power metal but there are a lot of people out there who like it and I think they have a much bigger fan base after that tour!

Love Edguy. My nephew's band just opened for Blind Guardian on the US/Canada tour. Check them out - Seven Kingdoms. Not on Pandora - yet!
Pandora needs to play these guys more often. I'm a little new to them, but they sound pretty good...when they decide to. I've heard some of their stuff that is in the vein of Spinal Tap that i didn't much care for, but aside from that the more serious stuff sounds great.
People who say that Edguy sounds like Iron Maiden really need to think before they speak. Maiden is and always will be my favorite band, but Edguy is my favorite power metal band. Tobias Sammet sounds like Bruce Dickinson only in the low ranges. I love both bands, but confusing them is a HUGE mistake.
to Pandora- please leave opinion out of the bio's. besides it being just plain wrong, it will probably conflict with someone else's opinion making you look bad
And for the people who say its boring, youre retarded... sometimes less is more when looking at it from a musical sense. You must be missing the subtleties of the music that really fill it up if you are paying attention. You dont need blast beats to be musically active. take the song rocket ride for example, in the verse there is hardly any base drum... doesnt take away from the music tho.. its actually something you rarely hear.. so open your mind to music.
he is more influenced by people like andre matos (being a singer and composer himself), and not so much iron maiden... not even sure why or how that correlation is being made... but his work speaks for itself (including his metal operas by avantasia) very well rounded and knowledgeable vocalist and composer.
Look I love Edguy as much as anyone, but if you think they are "the best heavy metal band of our generation" than you clearly haven't listened to much metal from the last twenty years. Now if you said they were the best POWER metal band of our generation, I would probably not be able to argue with you. But being the best power metal band isn't much of a distinction, really.

Edguy is by far the BEST heavy metal band of our generation simply as that. People said Iron maiden this and that and don't get me wrong they are a great classic band but they are already reaching their 60's, also Helloween has more influence on Edguy than any other band.
no, I second "Plague" the band sux big time. but they do have a good album, I think I enjoyed "Vain glory opera", it has some good moments to be honest. cheers for that!
ncook1994
He does sound like Bruce Dickinson
ncook1994
Plague of Unicorns what you are saying is that EDguy sucks you really must be mistaken this band with another
Sounds like Iron Maiden Worship ? Really ?? There maybe some simularities in the music because of the influence of Iron Maiden. But there is No way to compare these and/or any other band with the likes of Iron Maiden and what that band has contributed to the genre of melodic rock. There are still and always will be number one in my book.
Sounds like some big time Iron Maiden worship, but I can't complain. The song "Fallen Angels" has a nice solo. I'd say Edguy is a solid power metal band.

I sort of think Sammet sounds more like Paul Dianno of early Maiden. If you listen to a song like Phantom of the Opera from Iron Maiden, you can hear a lot of similarities, musically, between the two bands.
I like the band, but I don't get the name... Did they mean to name the band after some really cool guy, but they forgot his name? "Ph... You mean that Ed guy? Ed.. Smith... Jones... S**t, man. That Ed guy."
@sevieteague: Yeah, Sammet sounds a LOT like Bruce Dickinson. Once you listen to him for a little while though, you'll start to notice subtle differences that make them a little easier to distinguish from one another. Maiden is a bit darker than Edguy or Avantasia. Tobias tends to lean more towards the emotional side of things when it comes to his initial feel and lyrics. Especially in his works with Avantasia. It's a bit less ballsy than Iron Maiden.
This band is a perfect example of Pandora's one failing. It shows up on my "epic metal" station, and they share a lot of qualities with good bands like Kamelot, but they do nothing for me. Objectively I should like them, but they're just not a very good band.

masterpiece. . . I am at least going to get that one to start with.
