Ed Bruce

Like so many other artists, singer Ed Bruce got his start as a rockabilly act for Memphis' famed Sun Records; however, he was probably best known for his songwriting acumen. Born William Edwin Bruce Jr. in Arkansas in 1939, he cut his first sides for Sun at the age of 17. His career as a frenetic rockabilly performer was largely unsuccessful, however, and by 1964 Bruce had moved to Nashville to become a member of the Marijohn Wilkins Singers. He also entered into a lucrative career singing advertising jingles; his best-known campaign cast him as a character called the Tennessean.

In 1966, Bruce signed with RCA, notching his first chart hit with the single "Walker's Woods." More singles and a change of labels followed, but the singer struggled until 1975, when he took his composition "Mammas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys" into the Top 20. The song, Bruce's best-known, was later a monster hit when covered by the duo of Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson in 1977. His songs have also been recorded by the likes of Charlie Louvin, Tex Ritter, Tanya Tucker, and Crystal Gayle.

After a brief tenure at Epic Records between 1977 and 1978, Bruce achieved his greatest commercial success with MCA in the 1980s. "The Last Cowboy Song," featuring guest vocals from Willie Nelson, hit number 12 in 1980; both "Girls, Women and Ladies" and "(When You Fall in Love) Everything's a Waltz" also fell just short of entering the Top Ten. In 1981, Bruce hit number one with "You're the Best Break This Heart Ever Had"; other Top Five singles included "Ever, Never Lovin' You" (number four, 1982), "After All" (number four, 1983), "You Turn Me On (Like a Radio)" (number three, 1984), and "Nights" (number four, 1986). After the 1986 album Night Things and a 1988 self-titled follow-up, Bruce made a conscious decision to cut back on his music to focus on his acting career, appearing in several made-for-TV films. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi

Ed Bruce is truly one of the best musicians, Singer, Songwriter ever. His Songs , with his Unique delivery hits right down where you Live. One that is particularly Funny and also contains real Truth is Jesus Scared the Hell Out of Me, and another that Describes how he answered questions from friends & former associates about why they didn't see him in the old hangouts anymore, after beginning a Real commitment to Jesus Christ ! His Smooth, easy singing never gets old . May He Live Long !
Ed and Patty created some of the best traditional music, that was ever written,,I met Ed when I was in the middle of a taping of Hee Haw,,,and I feel like I really lost out by not having the opportunity to be around him more
i like his songs
Eddie sang at my wedding and my after party. I`'ve known him since he first came to Memphis. He is a gentle man. I too wished he had been more appreciated. His songwriting abilities, at least, have been noted and appreciated.

This song brings tears to my eyes! What a voice! I love his music!
i love to listen to the smooth voice and a man who has what i real country music voice
My father played for over 45 years, a true entertainer - from Vegas to Nashville. Soon, there will be no live entertainmen t any more. When I was a kid, live singing could be found in lounges 7 nights per week. Nowadays, you might find a bit on the weekends, mostly liquid jukebox junkies covering as close to records as possible. No originality in their compositions , no creativity in their performance. Sad!!!
This is a true gentleman, a genuine christian, a loving husband, and a wonderful friend to me. He and his wife have such big hearts. I love to visit and sit out on the porch, just listen to him pick the guitar and sing some lonesome song. Brilliant beyond his own self, he can solve a crossword puzzle in minutes. The lyrics of his songs say it all. Lets help revive this music.

"Country" music today, or pop-country, disgusts me. Only a small handful of people making music today are worth hearing. I am only 28 years young and I have a better appreciation for music than the Nashville junk being crammed down our throats today. Waylon, Willie, King George, Bruce, Don and Hank W, Johnny Lee and Conway- THAT'S MUSIC! I am ashamed to be apart of this generation and to see how far this country has strayed from it's roots and tradition. Bring Country and Western back Nashville!
I love this style of songs.
Most of the Great music artist have left this world or are leaving, country music is not what it was and when Nashville lost Operaland it lost a Great Tourist Attraction, so much for progress
