The Duprees

One of the final Italian doo wop groups to make a wave in the early '60s, the Duprees were in some senses not a rock & roll act at all. They relied on updates of pre-rock pop standards for most of their material, dressed up in classy big band arrangements. Their New Jersey street-corner roots were still audible in their doo wop harmonies, giving their treatments of moldy oldies enough of a contemporary flavor to compete in the rock and pop marketplace. They were very good at what they did, and in 1962-1963, they were very successful: "You Belong to Me" (previously recorded by Jo Stafford, Patti Page, Dean Martin, and Joni James) made the Top Ten, and "My Own True Love" (from the soundtrack of Gone With the Wind), "Have You Heard," and "Why Don't You Believe Me" were also Top 40 hits. The Duprees were already retro when they were at their peak, and were washed out by the British Invasion, although they continued to record throughout the late '60s, sometimes in a Jay & the Americans/Vogues style. ~ Richie Unterberger, Rovi

Great song football dance at OPCS
My all time favorite group. Got in trouble sneaking out to see them at Hershey Park back in the 60's.

This is the quintessence of the sweetness of the 1950's and 1960's. Listening to it just now washed away the 50+ years that has elapsed since dancing with Karen at the Teen Friday night dances held in the basement of a large church Shaker Heights, Ohio. I can still remember Tap Tappenden walking around with a ruler making sure that there was always at least a 6 distance between the teen couples dreamily moving around the floor - so oblivious at his attempts to bring us down out of our bliss
This is the song that my wife and I danced to as our first dance as husband and wife. Great memory!

Even loved their flip sides such as TAKE ME AS I AM!! the other side of this one!! Did anyone know that??
This song is a classic! I wouldn't exactly say they were 'retro' before they peaked. They were the music of the day

Such great music…it does a heart good to see so many comments from young people who love all the 50's & 60's music! It was a great time to grow up ;)
Love the 60's, nothing compared with today's music!
Another great Jersey group.
What about sensational vocalist, Ritchie Rossato, who searched out Mike Arnone, an original founding member, of The Duprees, and in 1975, helped Mike bring the once famous but not forgotten Duprees, back to the forefront, in 1985 - 2000? That man has the voice of, wel, I call him, the Italian Stallion! Check out their complete history!!!!
novasal1966

As much as I like British groups, constantly reading about how the British invasion wiped out street corner doo-wop groups like these, black and Italian alike, is very disheartenin g to me.
every man in that group is definitely a class act.
i met tony testa after a duprees concert about six years ago. i extended my hand and said to him, it'''s an honor just to shake your hand''''. i was wearing my viet nam veteran's hat. he looked at me, he gave me a big smile and he said. '''and it's also an honor to shake your hand''''
Then as now, my all-time favorite vocal group, and still out there today, mixing it up on the East Coast. Too bad about that for the rest of us, but carry on anyway, guys!
Hey Sundancecat, I still neck to this song!! Didn't we have the best time back then? We are so lucky to have these memories!
