One of the final Italian doo wop groups to make a wave in the early '60s, the Duprees were in some senses not a rock & roll act at all. They relied on updates of pre-rock pop standards for most of their material, dressed up in classy big band arrangements. Their New Jersey street-corner roots were still audible in their doo wop harmonies, giving their treatments of moldy oldies enough of a contemporary flavor to compete in the rock and pop marketplace. They were very good at what they did, and in 1962-1963, they were very successful: "You Belong to Me" (previously recorded by Jo Stafford, Patti Page, Dean Martin, andJoni James) made the Top Ten, and "My Own True Love" (from the soundtrack of Gone With the Wind), "Have You Heard," and "Why Don't You Believe Me" were also Top 40 hits. The Duprees were already retro when they were at their peak, and were washed out by the British Invasion, although they continued to record throughout the late '60s, sometimes in a Jay & the Americans/Vogues style. ~ Richie Unterberger, Rovi

As much as I like British groups, constantly reading about how the British invasion wiped out street corner doo-wop groups like these, black and Italian alike, is very disheartening to me.
i met tony testa after a duprees concert about six years ago. i extended my hand and said to him, it'''s an honor just to shake your hand''''. i was wearing my viet nam veteran's hat. he looked at me, he gave me a big smile and he said. '''and it's also an honor to shake your hand''''
Then as now, my all-time favorite vocal group, and still out there today, mixing it up on the East Coast. Too bad about that for the rest of us, but carry on anyway, guys!
Mike Kelly is a great singer and does so much justice to You belong to me I could listen to that song over and over again, hwich I have done.

My band and I opened for the Duprees about 10 or so years ago in NJ. What a blast! I believe it was Tommy I was emailing back and forth with - he was so nice.... that show was one of the highlights of my singing experience.

I LOVE IT,IT BRING BACK MEMORIES AS I WAS GROWING UP IN THE EARLY 60s WISH THEY COULD BE HERE AGAIN.BUT MAINLY DOO WOP AND OLDIE'SMOST OF THEM WERE BORN HERE IN NEWARK AND THE STATE OF NJ.
This is my all time favorite doowop group. The Duprees embody all the richness of the Glenn Miller sound and the harmony of the best doowop groups ever. Thank you, Jersey City.

I LOVE this group!!!!! I met a gentleman on an AK cruise last week that lives across the street from one of them---he's promised me a signed copy of one of their CD'S!!! Thank you very, very much, Richard!! God bless you. Linda E.
The current Duprees still tour continually. Still good, but excellent when lead singer Richie Rosato was still with them. There is no one like Richie. They need to bring him back into the fold. Richie was the Duprees.
