Happy BD Sir Duke!
Oh my new love. Heard him on American Hustle.
Duke could play it sweet or hot and his arrangements and musicians formed the best of the American big bands. Miller, Goodman, Shaw and James combined didn't have the hits the Duke did...he was a triple talent...pla y i n g , composing and leading...pl u s a cool style that made it all look easy and passionate at the same time.
Just got introduced to the Duke via "American Hustle"... Awesome tribute to him which inspired me to find him on Pandora!! ...captivati n g ! !
When my granddaughte r remarked that sadly there is no royalty in the USA, I told her, hey, Duke Ellington! What about Count Basie? Nat King Cole? She lived with me for the past two years and I exposed her to the greatest jazz and big band music that exists! I sure hope it sticks!! Queen Latifa? Prince?
Not to mention he's the king of all...
Duke was the man

When i give thanks for Ellington, i give thanks for Billy Strayhorn...

"Once a year all musicians should lay down there instruments and give thanks to Duke Ellington."
Duke's music is the embodiment of all that is great about jazz. His body of work is so vast and diverse it never gets old. Truly one of the top American artists ever.
I'm new to the Duke but when I listen to him I feel like I'm back at my grandparents watching 50's B&W movies on their 13" TV screen. It feels that comforting. I'm now a fan of his and I'm also researching other music from that era. It is all the best.
How about Nancy wilson

I've been making over $350 a week from home using this site called BLUDOS.COM basically you take surveys for cash. You can do this for free as well.

Was implies that he's no longer living, not that someone else passed him up,
We all have sinned use a pure heart let the judge decide
Duke IS the greatest composer in jaz history. Was implies that someone passed him up. Hasn't happened and never will!
This song rocks !!! You hear everything that makes music become a love

The Greatest...
I listened to the Duke a long time ago and he left me spellbound.
Blanton-Webs t e r is the best Ellington album, imho.
I miss this music so much! What passes for music these days appalls me. Now I am hard of hearing which adds to my problem. These sounds I'm hearing now are wonderful, Wish I could hear all the parts like I used to be able to. Ellington, Benny Goodman, Shaw, etc., these were the greatest.

Superb...
Duke & Count led the two swingin-est best big-bands with most talented soloists of any era-(tho Noble.Miller , Shaw,.Kenton , Ferguson, & Herman were right up there too!!) the Dukes superb band was sexy, silky often ethereal but could be raucously reedy/brassy too when called for-all amply provided on surely the greatest jazz-movie-s c o r e ever -'Anatomy of a Murder'. The Counts equally talented crew had a big FAT earthy juicy sound with far-out solos epitomized on the collaboratio n with Sinatra
@flarican64, that's great! I was exposed to all kinds of music growing up and I'm thankful to my mama and grandma, etc for exposing me to all kinds and they say studying/rea d i n g can be better memorized if doing so while listening to soft/classic a l music. Seems to be true :) God bless..
I play my Frank Sinatra station 24/7 because they play such amazing music. My grandkids do their homework while listening to this music too....I can see them when they go to college, doing their homework listening to Frank et al. So proud that they'll like all types of music like me and their momma (my daughter).

Taru Jon... So it was your dad, Willie Cook, who played the exquisite muted trumpet solo on Mood Indigo. That Ellington recording is my very favorite. I love your dad's sound. Each time I hear the recording, I find myself humming the beautiful tight harmony along with the trumpet solo. Never tire of it !! Thank you for the post.
GREAT
@Taru Jon Cook - lucky lady! All props to your dad who had to be a great player just to be in that band! Will be listening to Mood Indigo with new ears.
The Duke was definitely one of a kind, and still is today. Talented beyond description, his music will live forever, no matter the current style. The musicians he had, also memorable! Johnny Hodges, one of my favorites, played with loving intensity. So happy we all have access to the wonderful records and tapes. EFT - Vancouver, Wa.
I used to love Spike Jones. I'm going to see if I can have a
Spike Jones station. Bet Pandora's got him. DMB
Such a rare and enjoyable pleasure to be in the groove, eight to the bar and to listen to this swell music like it never went away and to read the comments of you keen been there done that folks. Makes me think of what the current generation is going to have to look back on as the sound track of their youth. Sad. Don't axe me to trade dude. We had decentcy, we had good taste and we had great music. We had it sweet too didn't we gang. DMB
Had the opportunity to travel with the band as a kid. My father (Willie Cook) played trumpet with Duke Ellington on and off for twenty years. Got to know quite a few of the old timers like Paul Gonsalves, who was especially close to my dad. Listen to my dad play solo on Mood Indigo.
Read 'Music Is My Mistress' by the Duke. Not as good as meeting him but you will get some insight into the man.
what can you say its duke one of the all time legends of jazz man what i would give to have met this man.
@sjbrownsvil l e - props to your grandfather. He must have been one cool cat and you were one lucky kid. BTW - Satin Doll is my fave tune of Dukes as well.

Outstanding collection

As a youngster I used to go with my father to the Grandview Inn, in Columbus,Ohi o when the big jazz bands were in town. The Duke was there at least once a year. I just sat there and held my breath until he played Satin Doll. Thankfully, he generally opened with that at that time. Great memories.
In the early 70's I had the chance to see Duke and his orchestra at the Great American Music Hall in SF, CA. They wanted $11. I thought that was too much and passed. He died a year or two later. I know, what the hell was I thinking. Still keeps me up at night wondering.

I like how this entire article never once mentions Irving Mills, my great-grandf a t h e r . Without his publishing company and his tireless work promoting (and yes, profiting), Duke Ellington would likely have had a far different course in his career.
I had the chance to see him and his band at the NCO club at Hyan AFB GER. the DUKE was the showman!!!!
I love the Duke's "A Sentimental Mood"
Songs like "Warm Valley and Nights in Tunisia" with that lush but present back beat opens the curtains to Duke's genius, and with Johnny's sax hauling that laid back "Caravan" you just gotta give it up!
jeremey15
It's so fun to play his music in my band class. I love to play the into to Satain Doll
I'm so old I remember oneof his drummers, Sonny Grier. (sp)
I love the Duke's recording entitled "Masterpiece s " !

i thought he played the cotton club till 1933 ???????????? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?
