That piano part isn't for ironic effect, its a part of the songs deeper structure as a part of the Metropolis story. The Dance is a musical representation of the turbulence of love, with its constant rhythmic themes and changes. Its truly a masterpiece.
If you like standard non productive music, don't listen to DT, if you do like out of the ordinary, then you'll love DT, all the members seem to fit like a glove for my ear's, everyone has different intake senses, to music, which usually change through the years. DE

I love it when Rudnes plays the piano in the middle as you can tell IM a big fan of his

Jordan Rudess makes Dream Theater sound better then ever

Incredible tune.
@troyw91 - Perhaps the piano lick midway thru is for ironic effect?

Jordan Rudess almost wrecks Dream Theater for me. He's a talented player, but awful. DT is one of my favorite bands, but since Rudess came on board, it's been getting harder and harder to listen. Awful. I feel like I'm at the circus or a carnival at times when he does his, well, whatever he does. Kevin Moore and Derek Sherinian were good in DT. Get Rudess the heck out that great band. But, they chose him, so they must like his terrible sounds and carnival solos. Bleh.
Well said everyone...hilarious in terms of it being so funny that DT is THAT good then yes! Love Myung's bass solo and also Rudess' little diddy. What a fun song!!!
