The lead singer and namesake of 1980s heavy metal band Dokken, Don Dokken (born Donald Maynard Dokken) fueled Los Angeles' metal scene beginning in the late '70s. Although Dokken temporarily disbanded following the Monsters of Rock tour and a multi-platinum album, in 1988 he continued to make his presence felt as a soloist and with the Don Dokken Band, featuring guitarists John Norum and Billy White, bassist Peter Baltes, and drummer Mickey Dee. Re-formed in 1994, Dokken remained as tumultuous as ever. Original guitar player George Lynch, who had led his own band, Lynch Mob, during Dokken's hiatus, was replaced by Reb Beach, former guitarist for Winger and Alice Cooper in 1998. In a subsequent interview, Dokken explained that Lynch had "threatened to kill me in front of the record company president in Germany and tried to blackmail the president into flying his girlfriend to Germany or he would not do a TV show for three million viewers." Beach was later replaced by Don Dokken Band guitarist John Norum. In June 2003, the reorganized group toured the United States with Poison. ~ Craig Harris, Rovi
I really like this album. It's inevitably compared to Lynch Mob, but I like the different directions that each band took. Lynch was more raw and Don Dokken was very polished. Ya can't complain about an album with so many harmonized guitar solos.
Love Lynch Mobs hard edge and guitar technicality. Dons life has been filled with train wreck relationships and let downs all of his doing. So he writes about them. Yea the songs are sappy but listen to the words and music. There is a lot of meat and potatoes in them. These are good lyrics and music.
Wicked Sensation was a slightly better album than Up From The Ashes. Lynch's compositions were harder edged, while many of Dokken's were on the sappy side.

Pretty good cd. Better then anything lynch ever did. Saw Lynch Mob many years ago, and they sucked.

This album is OK. There are a few good tunes on it, but it is not anywhere near the album Back for the Attack was. AND, when this came out, Lynch Mob's "Wicked Sensation" came out. Wicked Sensation destroys this album. It was harder, meaner, more melodic, and Lynch's guitar work was insane on top of the fact that Lynch Mob ROCKED live vs Don Dokken's band. They struggled to pull off the licks Lynch laid down in his sleep live, outside of the fact that seeing a Dokken concert without hearing

BILLY WHITE AND JOHN NORUM WERE AND ARE TWO OF THE BEST GUITARISTS OUT THERE! WHEN DON PUT THIS BAND TOGETHER FOR THIS RUN OF TOURING AND PLAYING TO MAKE "UP FROM THE ASHES" IT JUST SHOWED HOW WELL HE COULD PICK HIS FELLOW MUSICIANS RIGHT AWAY! WITH THE ADDITION OF PETER BALTES ON BASS GUITAR AND THE AMAZING MICHAEL (MICKIE) DEMOPOULOS ON HE DRUMS, WELL WHAT ELSE CAN BE SAID! UNBELIEVABLE! U.FT.A. KICKS A** DUDES! 1000 MILES AWAY IS ONE OF MY FAVS! AS EVER, MIKEY THE ldb :)
I recently re-discovered this CD. Forgot how good the guitar work was.Don Dokken's vocals are powerful. I used to see Billy White play in a band called Watchtower locally here in San Antonio.

Most shredders can't write a good song to save their butt. Don was the driving force behind Dokken since day one and this album shows it.
Great album band. Terrible live. I've seen them 4 or 5 times including the Monsters Of Rock in LA - and they are generally horrible live. Too bad - because their albums - especially pre-Erase the Slate are very good.
