Dishwalla

The Santa Barbara, CA, band Dishwalla made a big splash in 1996 with their catchy pop single "Counting Blue Cars." With the gritty heart and soul of those who came before them, Dishwalla's hard rock sound was enough for fans to make "Counting Blue Cars" one of the most-requested songs of that year. The song also garnered the band a Billboard award for Rock Song of the Year and allowed their debut album, Pet Your Friends, to sell more than a million copies.

Dishwalla, which emerged out of the early stages of post-grunge, is composed of J.R. Richards (vocals), Scot Alexander (bass), Rodney Browning (guitar), Jim Wood (keyboards), and George Pendergast (drums). They spent the mid-'90s touring with the likes of Sheryl Crow, Blind Melon, and the Goo Goo Dolls in support of Pet Your Friends. Prior to making a second album, the band was caught in the middle of the Polygram/Universal merger and such a move left Dishwalla pondering what to do next. Their second album And You Think You Know What Life's About was released in 1998; promotion and sales were lackluster due to label downsizing. Dishwalla's time with A&M was shortlived and exhausting because of such corporate behavior, but they stuck it out to contribute their cover version of "Policy of Truth" for the Depeche Mode tribute album For the Masses. By the new millennium, Dishwalla left behind major-market America for a third album. They signed with Immergent while Pendergrast left the band. Pete Maloney, a drummer picked up on the 1998 tour, resumed percussion duties. In 2002, Dishwalla appeared sound and sane, issuing the experimental third album Opaline. A self-titled album followed in 2005. ~ MacKenzie Wilson, Rovi

Just saw them at Coach House in San Juan Capistrano, CA. They are so tight, so pitch perfect and the lyrics are at the level of bands that are legendary (think U2). Sadly they are sans J.R. He jumped ship and they got a new guy who looks like his name should be Frankie. He's got a voice, but look who's shoes he is filling. Can't be done. He gave respectable effort and carried the songs, but you can tell it's not J.R. They need new material for this guy's voice.

Use to have the song on my I-pod years ago but my aunt and uncle's computer destroy my I-pod. But glad about my pandora not being destroy at all
JR has an amazing voice...one of the best I ever heard. Awesome!
This band should be as big as maroon 5. Idg it
I just saw them in Ft Lauderdale Fl. with Vertical horizon and Tonic .. what an amazing show!!

I feel in love with this band in 1995 when my girlfriend's (at the time) uncle introduced them to me. Her uncle had discovered them and represented them at A&M Records and continued with them even after they left the label. I was lucky enough to see them live more times then I can count. I always paid for my tickets, never took a freebee. Saying these guys were incredible musicians is an understateme n t .

Does anyone know why the Dishwalla station rarely plays Dishwalla??? A l s o , why is there no J.R. Richards station? Unless I just can't find it. There should be one! :)
*bradley, I LOVE this band. I've seen them live 3 times and JR Richards solo album is badass if you haven't heard it.

no comment in 5 months. I think this may be my last comment for a little while, since I usually have people hating on me for stating an opinion... Completely agree with the comment section under this artist :) Sometimes the most underrated artists can simply be the best
Absolutely love these guys , but they will never come to western mass & I refuse to travel to Boston.

One of my favorite bands! Super talented musicians and all around excellent people, for sure one, if not the one most underrated band of all times...
I saw DW play 3 times and they are incredible, met the band during Opaline tour, solid guys, very talented, would love to see again one day
Check out J.R. Richards' Solo album. It's gotten almost zero notoriety but it's a solid album. I had the chance to see these guys perform live three separate times. Awesome!!!. Also super nice guys. I had the chance to meet them after a show in OK several years ago.

Awesome group. I wish they'd come out with a new album.
The tattoo is not real, nor is the woman. It's all illustrated and if you look at the woman's hand, the vines of the tattoo are weaving throughout her fingers :)
bjknapp25
I really hope the tattoo on the woman's belly on that cover isn't real.
this band deserves so much more of a following than they got. J.R. Richards is the best vocalist alive, and the lyrics are ten times better than anything in recent pop music. i sincerely hope this band will somehow gain a cult following sometime soon.
Dishwalla is one of the most underrated bands of their time. every single song is beautiful. i will never understand why they dont have a bigger following
Opaline is my favorite album of all-time. It has so many amazing songs. I even get a hint of religion out of it's soothing sounds. I don't know that they have marketed to Christian rock but this would do. Ironically, this cd was stollen from me in the sound booth at a Church. Enjoy!
Another one of my favorites! DW has a style all their own and a lot of talent. Their tunes are typically pretty mellow but can be very haunting. Opaline definitely the most mellow of the mellow albums but packs so much emotion. Candleburn has got to be one of the saddest songs I've ever heard but a great song none the less. I miss these guys and wish they'd put out a new album one of these days soon. If you've never heard anything of theirs other than Blue Car, give them another listen!
many considered them a one hit wonder, but all their music was good. Just bad promotion by their label(s) Opaline a great CD. Wish there would be more from them.
Haven't heard this in a long time. Love it
fav band ever 8D Dishwalla rules

"Dishwalla's website has been inactive for a couple years. Are they still together, touring and/or making music??"

Unfortunatel y , no. They've broken up recently due to a lack of mainstream success. But it's cool, because Scot now plays in my aunt's band!
I enjoy Dishwalla's music, that have great vocals with a harmonious sound that just can not be denied. It is great music to listen to while you are looking for inspiration or just driving in the car.

Dishwalla is an amazing band with talented artists, especially J.R's vocals!! I have listened to them for years now and their songs have helped me through a lot of hard times. I love this band and wish they would tour around here again....
