Dianne Reeves

Dianne Reeves has been one of the top singers in jazz ever since the late '80s. A logical successor to Dinah Washington and Carmen McRae (although even she can't reach the impossible heights of Ella and Sarah Vaughan), Reeves is a superior interpreter of lyrics and a skilled scat singer. She was a talented vocalist with an attractive voice even as a teenager when she sang and recorded with her high school band. She was encouraged by Clark Terry, who had her perform with him while she was a college student at the University of Colorado.

There have been many times when Reeves has explored music beyond jazz. She did session work in Los Angeles starting in 1976, toured with Caldera, worked with Sergio Mendes in 1981, and toured with Harry Belafonte between 1983 and 1986. Reeves began recording as a leader in 1982 and became a regular at major jazz festivals. Her earlier recordings tended to be quite eclectic and many of her live performances have included original, African-inspired folk music (which is often autobiographical), world music, and pop.

After signing with Blue Note in 1987, however, and particularly since 1994, Reeves has found her place in jazz, recording several classic albums along the way, most notably I Remember, The Grand Encounter, The Calling: Celebrating Sarah Vaughan, and A Little Moonlight. In 2005, she appeared onscreen singing '50s standards in the George Clooney film Good Night, And Good Luck. When You Know was released in 2008. Reeves left Blue Note in 2009. After touring and an extended break, she eventually signed with Concord and began working on a new record produced by Terri Lynne Carrington. The pair enlisted an all-star cast including Esperanza Spalding, Sheila E, Robert Glasper, and George Duke (who passed away shortly after the album was completed). Beautiful Life was released just in time for Valentine's Day, 2014. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi

One of the finest voices to ever grace the planet. I've seen her twice in concert - at the Village Vanguard in NYC, and at NJPAC in Newark, NJ. Both shows were pure magic. What an amazing singer!
Have loved Dianne from day one when I first heard her. It's a shame she is so underrated! My heart goes out to her at the loss of her dear cousin, George Duke.
seen her in concert. totally blown away

Thank you Pandora. She's wonderful
Dianne Reeves is a favorite, and my favorite song is Better Days or as I call it The Grandma Song.
I bought my first Dianne Reeves album "Never Too Far" (on cassette) in 1990, recommended by a friend who managed a record store in South Dakota. I have been a devoted fan since. Four Grammys (3 consecutivel y ) , a founding member of Jazz at Lincoln Center, 'me thinks', illustrates the musicality, professional i s m , and place in history which Dianne Reeves so rightly deserves. She is an American Treasure. I now live in Denver, CO. Dianne does too. "I Remember Sky" Give her a chance, open your ears
I would listen to her sing the yellow pages to me! #Classicvoic e !
Always liked her. Always will. She is a much-neglect e d artist, and I have joined in the neglecting. Pandora makes it easy to hear a variety of her beautiful work.
Right up there with Ella in my opinion. Spot on pitch, wonderful wit and wisdom. Her voice is a gift from the Lord. So glad I was able to hear her this weekend at Longwood Gardens.

Who writes and feels the need to score her lower than Ella and Sarah? Pshaw. Dianne is incredible!
I cannot believe I am so late getting on the Dianne Reeves train... but better late than never! I first heard her last month on my local public radio station's nightly jazz program and I was just riveted! I may be a brand-new fan, but I'm enthusiastic ! :-)
Saw her in Toledo from a 3rd row seat at her performance. Never been the same...

I agree with all the praise and she has a great jazz combo backing her too! Classy stuff. One of the only scat singers I enjoy. Try her Christmas albumn this season. Wonderful!

I feel in love with her spirit before I ever saw her! Timeless voice.

I fell in love with her voice the very first time I heard it.
I remember I first fell in love with Diane Reeves' voice when she was a vocalist with the group Caldera. She had a sound that chilled your spine. Then I heard her on various other albums. I was hooked. When she signed with Blue Note Records I was elated. She hasn't disappointed at all. She is simply the best of the new guard. Her tradition reaches back to Sarah, Ella, Carman and Dinah. God bless her, I hope she's around for a long, long time.
Awesome voice! She gives it her heart and soul!

Dianne stand amongst the best, Billie, Ella, Sarah, Carmen, Betty and Nina. I think she's great. :)

Class...thro u g h and through.
Great to have someone with the talents of Ella and Sarah still going strong! She is Dianne, with her own greatness.
casacox48
She's not as good as Shirley Horn was, but good. Still think Shirley has most beat.

For me, Dianne is every bit UP THERE with Ella and Sarah. I've actually tired of some of Ella's scatting. Dianne is always listenable. The warmth of her tone. The tenderness. The sensuality. The phrasing. Excellence all around. I've love to see her in concert or at a jazz club. I have a Dianne Reeves station created.
I am so happy to consider her a new addition to my favorite lady singers. She can do it all!

I need to pick up "Good Night, And Good Luck". I've hear Dianne Reeves many times but this work moves me and pleases my senses. To me, it's a break through experience for me and her. Thanks,Pando r a .
Where is the rest of her stuff? And where is the rest of Bobby Bland's stuff? They don't even have Sir Roland Hanna or Dorothy Donegan in their database.

Many years ago when I lived in Venice, CA one of my favorite watering holes was a little place called the Comeback Inn and there I bought Ms. Reeves a drink in thanks for her incomparable talent. Thanks for the memories.
Everything about her is perfect, especially her concert!
Stunning performer on record but even more so live. Great vocal range but unlike Celine Dion and Mariah Carey and their ilk, Dianne uses her range tastefully.
i want to hear the whole album
