Descendents

Fueled by "rejection, food, coffee, girls, fishing and food," the Descendents sprang up during the halcyon days of the Los Angeles punk scene; fusing the blind rage of hardcore with an unexpectedly wry, self-deprecating wit and a strong melodic sensibility which set them distinctly apart from their West Coast brethren, they gradually emerged as one of the most enduring and adored bands of their time. Formed in 1979, the Descendents' first lineup consisted of vocalist/guitarist Frank Navetta, vocalist/bassist Tony Lombardo, and drummer Bill Stevenson; initially sporting an edgy power pop sound inspired by the Buzzcocks, the group issued a debut single, "Ride the Wild," and then promptly vanished from sight.

When the Descendents resurfaced in 1981, they were a four-piece fronted by vocalist Milo Auckerman, a beloved figure within the hardcore community who infused the group's identity with both unmitigated teen angst and a healthy dose of goofball humor. Amid a relentless, caffeine-powered touring schedule, the Descendents found time to record the 1981 EP Fat, a collection spotlighting both Auckerman's affection for fast food ("Weinerschnitzel," "I Like Food") and distaste for parental guidance ("My Dad Sucks"). A year later, the group issued their debut LP, Milo Goes to College; despite the considerable levity of tracks like "Bikeage" and "Suburban Home," the title was no joke -- Auckerman was indeed headed off to study biochemistry, and when Stevenson joined the ranks of Black Flag, the Descendents went on sabbatical.

In 1985, the group re-formed, with SWA alum Ray Cooper replacing Navetta on guitar; after the release of the more pop-flavored album I Don't Want to Grow Up, ex-Anti bassist Doug Carrion assumed Lombardo's duties. A sunnier perspective informed 1986's Enjoy!, as evidenced by the inclusion of a cover of the Beach Boys' "Wendy," but after 1987's All, the group split again; after Stevenson formed a new group, also dubbed All, the only Descendents products to appear for a number of years were a pair of live releases, 1987's Liveage! and 1989's Hallraker. Somewhat surprisingly, Auckerman and Stevenson re-formed the Descendents in 1996 with All bassist Karl Alvarez and guitarist Stephen Egerton; in addition to mounting a tour, the group recorded a new album, Everything Sucks. Following the tour, Auckerman once again returned to his life in the chem lab until 2004 when the guys were back with two new releases, both issued on Fat Wreck -- February brought the EP 'Merican, and the full-length Cool to Be You followed a month later. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi

Michael actually they they are like misfits black flag minor threat and fugazi because the original line up in the 80s was hardcore like all them

Sorry, but Descendents is really nothing like Minor Threat, The Misfits, Fugazi or Black Flag. Sure, Black Flag had Billy as their drummer so dat dat boom dat beat he likes so much is sorta there... but other than their origin dates and general punk roots, those bands are really nothing like Descendents at all.
I remember back in the late 80's early 90's skateboardin g to these guys,my favorite song I'm not a loser.Got to see these guys somewhere in the early 2000's at the hollywood palladium got kicked out 5 songs into to their set but still a good show.
Milo Goes To College is on Two Things At Once, but im surprised they dont have ALL or I Don't Want To Grow Up on the Discography! And even Enjoy!
This song is the s**t!!
Great band! My most recent obsession. That bass player doesn't get nearly enough credit (neither do most)

Descendents playing in Denver, CO. @ the Fillmore tonight 01.28.2012
Great band but nothing or theirs compares to Milo goes to college. Somery is kinda good too so Two things at Once is the best bet for buying their good stuff. At least they were honest about calling their one of their later albums everything sucks..meric a n and cool to be you should've been Sucks II and Sucks III..
Where is Enjoy!?
Actually "Milo Goes to College" is there. It's combined with the Bonus Fat album in a 2-piece called Two Things At Once.
One of the greatest bands to play with your girl around. Esp. if her name is Wendy.
Descendants rock the socks off. Dorian, check out "Two Things At Once".
Milo Goes to College isn't on here still. Seriously Pandora, get on that s**t.

Blink 182 has quoted that The Descendents are a huge inspiration to their music. I began listening to Blink before they were "Top 40", thus stopped as soon as I heard them on the radio, but you cannot deny that these two bands in fact do have a link. Have been an avid Descendents fan since the early 80's and love the fact that they never went completely main stream...
Blink 182, in a Descendents thread? Keep listening to top 40 radio. Listening is your strong suit. Thinking, is not.

S**t in a bucket, with my brain.......
Amazing band, and one of my favorite labels got their named from them, I want a Suburban Home!

What Tim said. SST has the Black Flag and Husker Du albums here... what gives with NOT promoting their THIRD BESTSELLING act ever? What am I missing here? Namely... Milo Goes To College and I Don't Want To Grow Up.
Pandora's missing their best albums!
They have been playing some shows in Austrailia.. . . maybe they will hit the states????
they can't post what they aren't ALLOWED to post....
Saw the Descendents at the old Olympic Auditorium back in '81 with DOA, Husker Du, .45 Grave and Black Flag for 6 or 7 bucks. That will always remain my favorite show. Can't beat the price lol
I saw documentary called American Hardcore. While I thought it was entertaining I was disappointed that the Descendents were never mentioned. Now I have kids I allow them the freedom to what they want to listen to. Guess what there preferences are?
Love chicks that love the Descendents! ! Samantha Torpey you ROCK!!
gregrehm9
Caught my neice singing 'I like food' at thanksgiving dinner.
"Pep Talk" has helped me through more than one breakup.
Word - sammy fiori. I loved them when I was 16, and 19 years later they are still rocking my stereo!! Good to see Pandora added "Two Things At Once", but still have a lot more to add.
the Descendents are still the f**king bomb.
