Del Amitri

Del Amitri's easy blend of Beatlesque pop and country-rock has made them a worldwide road and radio staple since the mid-'80s. Formed in Scotland in 1982 by bassist/vocalist/songwriter Justin Currie and longtime guitarist and collaborator Ian Harvie, the duo released Sense Sickness on a small Glasgow indie label the following year. Through heavy touring and positive word of mouth, the band -- which now included drummer Paul Tyagi and guitar player Bryan Tolland -- managed to impress the suits at Chrysalis Records enough to offer the fledgling group a recording contract. Their Hugh Jones-produced self-titled major-label debut was released in 1985 amidst a tidal wave of hype, but their signature blend of new wave and country-folk isolated audiences and critics alike, resulting in their inevitable departure from the Chrysalis family.

Del Amitri rebounded with a self-financed U.S. tour that broadened their network of fans and landed them a deal with A&M. In 1987 the quartet expanded by one, adding keyboardist Andy Alston and replacing Tolland with David Cummings and Tyagi with Brian McDermott, and began work on Waking Hours. Released in 1989, the Gil Norton/Hugh Jones-produced LP yielded the band's first British hit, "Kiss This Thing Goodbye," a song that also found success in the U.S. In 1992 the group charted with "Always the Last to Know" from the Change Everything album, but it wasn't until the release of 1995's Twisted and its infectious hit "Roll to Me" that Del Amitri could declare global victory.

Their follow-up, Some Other Sucker's Parade, relied heavily on the adult alternative jangle pop that made Twisted such a success, but failed to generate any lasting hits. Hatful of Rain: The Best of Del Amitri, a much-needed career-spanning anthology that collected the prolific yet spotty group's best tunes, was released in 1998 along with a companion CD, B-Sides Lousy With Love. Del Amitri released the soulful and melodic Can You Do Me Good? in 2002. ~ James Christopher Monger, Rovi

Roll To Me. Good song. Good lyrics. Very good.
Got to see this band when I was in college and I agree that they are the best live band I ever saw. They have such a great sound, and obviously have put a lot of time in creating lyrics, etc. Anyone who hasn't listened to them, be aware, you will get hooked.

one of my all time favorite songs is roll to me :)
Probably the best live band I've seen, and I have seen hundreds of shows from stadiums to dive bars. I have probably seen del amitri 5 or 6 times in different venues and they are so tight live it's amazing. Always love the guitars and awesome harmonies. I have been a fan for over 20 years and counting!
my daughter turned me on to these guys several years ago , i was blown away by the songwriting and have been hooked on their sound ever since , thanks holly for showing me some great music !
Can't remember ever hearing a bad song by these guys - saw them almost 15 years ago at a club in Boston - the best show in a small venue I ever saw - a truly great but underappreci a t e d band

Mr. Pandora needs to pony up some more Del Amitri...
One of the best songwriters of his generation

and here I was thinking I was the only person this side of the mason dixie line that ever even heard of del amitri! I love these guys. yes, best "refreshing mix of instruments and harmonies" so true! I was grocery shopping yesterday and heard a song over the 'mus-ac" ;) and it reminded me to pull out my cd's!!

I always thought this song was spin doctors :(
I love these guys! They were really down to earth in person when they came to First Avenue in Minneapolis. They're great musicians too -- tight! That was a show I'll always remember with a smile.

took a chance on Del when I first heard their 'pop' radio hits in the 90s. Twisted was the first I bought. then "Change Everything" -- Love them!!! Would love to hear them play in Scotland (or Justin Currie) someday... refreshing mix of instruments and harmonies... not to mention excellent song writing... love them!
"change everything" is one of the best albums i've ever heard.
Justin Currie is simply one of the best songwriters of his generation, period.

I agree with all: one of the great guitar-pop-r o c k bands of the last 2 decades. Also agree with solaspam: "Even their "B-Sides" are better than a lot of the junk on the radio today." I must add, I can't believe their album Change Everything is not listed above! That was their finest - and includes the utterly gorgeous Be My Downfall - with Wakings Hours their second, then Twisted. If you're reading here, you want to buy them all. Trust me.
My wife looked at me like I was keeping a secret when this band popped up and played. Great sound.

My favorite band. Period. I've been listening to them for almost 20 years. I can't think of any other band that's managed to permeate every aspect of my life quite like the Dels have. And yes, there are several albums not listed here. They're all worth getting!
i looove this band so much!! i wish they would have released more stuff!!
I love the song Roll To Me!! Im glad pandora put it on my playlist
My all-time favorite band! Even their "B-Sides" are better than a lot of the junk on the radio today.

there are numerous additional DelAmitri albums that are not listed here- all of which are great! I'm surprised that Pandora is missing these :-(

will always be at the top of my list!
Thanks acuttit, I checked out Justins myspace just in time to find out he toured solo through the northwest last May! He played Portland and Seattle and I didn't hear anything about it. I definitely would have caught the Portland show had I known. By the way, his bio page is absolutely hilarious, a recommended read for a good laugh.
Great band. Been an avid fan since the late 80's and have seen them live twice. Intelligent, often sensitive songs and Justin Currie has a great voice. I like their use of instruments like accordian and banjo. I cannot understand why they haven't made it into the real big time as they have so much talent. Hell, they can't even get a recording contract at the moment.
This is the best way to find out more about Justin:

Now, if he'll only do a tour through Ohio. :)
I miss Justin and the boys so much - I loved this band more than anything and there is such a gap in the music world without them!
Really one of the greatest bands of the past 25 years. I guess I'm one of the few who realize it. I've been a zealous Del fan since I first heard "Kiss this thing Goodbye" back in the late 80's. Last I heard, Justin Currie was fronting an R&B band in Scotland. That guy has one of the really great pop music voices.
