This song is based on a real incident, when "some stupid with a flare gun" shot it off at a Frank Zappa concert in Montreaux and "burned the place to the ground". Frank and his band lost all their equipment. Deep Purple was in the area recording with a mobile studio truck they had borrowed from the Rolling Stones ("the rolling truck stones thing") and had to move to an older hotel.
One of the first rock bands I ever listened to. Thanks to my big brother Frank ( Hotdog ) for introducing them to me when I was I think 15 or maybe even younger...a long time ago I have to say. Hehehe
I grew up with one of the live versions, hugely powerful sounding. As a result, hearing this version only a year or two ago for the first time, it sounds... empty. It just doesn't envelope you the way the live version does. Specifically the version found on "Knocking at Your Back Door: The Best of Deep Purple in the 80's". Still love the song, but this isn't the version I'm going to rock out to.
My friend bought this album when it first came out. We were both just learning to play at the time, and we both used to say to each other "How did he do that." I bought it on CD a couple of years ago and I still listen to it regularly. oh, by the way-What great drums on this!
