I've got a hunger twisting my stomach into knots; that my tongue is tied off My brain's repeating if you've got an impulse, let it out! But they never make it past my mouth

As below, this is a happy-sounding melody joined to awfully depressed lyrics. DCFC (and Gibbard in particular) have a knack for that type of unusual songwriting. This can make for hilarious situations where you find yourself happily singing along, only to realize what you've just said...
I love this song! :D Such an upbeat break from the rest of the somewhat downer tracks... which i also love!

I think it goes beyond that. Yes you are right, however it can also be interpreted by being about life, and growing up and wondering what things would be like if they were different.
I am really not sure how this song can be interpreted as having a happy tone, other then Ben's unmistakable vocal pitch. To me, it will always be about missed opportunities.
