Deafheaven

Originally formed as a duo in 2010, Deafheaven are an experimental black metal band from San Francisco, California. Initially made up of George Clarke (vocals) and Kerry McCoy (guitars), the band has a sound that blends black metal with elements of shoegaze, adding a layer of warmth to the genre's typically icy sound while expanding the emotional range outside of the typical themes of death, despair, and hopelessness. As a duo, Clarke and McCoy wrote and recorded a demo on their own that would get the attention of Converge frontman Jacob Bannon's label, Deathwish Inc., which released the untitled EP in 2010. The pair expanded the lineup to include guitarist Nick Bassett, bassist Derek Prine, and drummer Trevor Deschryver, who appeared on Deafheaven's 2011 full-length debut, Roads to Judah, before parting ways with the band the following year. Looking to get back to their roots a bit, McCoy and Clarke worked on the writing for their follow-up album as a duo again, though they would recruit drummer Daniel Tracy to join them in the studio for the recording process. The result was their sophomore effort, Sunbather, which was released to critical acclaim in the summer of 2013. ~ Gregory Heaney, Rovi

Actually, the vocalist is pretty intelligent, and the way his mind works is very interesting to say the least.

The band members are f**king stupid as hell, but their music is genius.

I hate how they're considered "hipster" for not going with the norm. Hipster, not hipster, I'll always love em and their incredible style!

I got to see them live. It was great. I don't know how their drummer's arms don't fall off though.

This band is absolutely amazing. They hit feelings and emotions other bands dream of doing with their sound.

hipster or not my ears still like it!

Deafheaven is Progressive black metal, with shoegaze elements, and have an incredible lyrical aesthetic. There is no such thing as hipster. This is a fantastic band that does it different from the rest. The main reason they got full attention from Converge

Kinda hipster-y like moomoo007 said but I think the post-rock and shoegaze elements make me like this band a lot, easier to get into I guess

Great tune, but I'm with MooMoo007 on this one.

And hipster black metal was born....

If the vocals blend with rather than drown out the instruments it makes for better songs. This is true in music, this is true in black metal. Metal album covers that aren't OBVIOUSLY metal are nothing new. There's no reason the corpse paint and sweater vest crowds can't combine their legendary snobberies. Deafheaven is good, not great Black Metal, but they ARE Black Metal and ARE a great way to counteract all the really bad black metal out there.
