David Darling

Eclectic composer/cellist David Darling incorporates jazz, classical, country, pop, and new age music into his playing and compositions. Starting as a child, Darling displayed facility with many different instruments and styles of music; he began with piano at age four, moved to cello six years later, and played string bass in his high school band (while also serving as bandleader). After finishing his studies in classical cello at Indiana State College in 1965, Darling stayed on as an instructor for four more years.

In the '70s, Darling divided his time between working in Nashville, working as a studio musician with country artists including Johnny Cash, and touring the world with the Paul Winter Consort as a soloist, composer, and singer until 1978. 1979 saw his solo debut as well as the beginning of his collaboration with Ralph Towner, with whom Darling founded the chamber jazz group Gallery.

After Gallery ended in the mid-'80s, Darling went on to work with artists as diverse as Glen Moore, John Clark, Spyro Gyra, and Bobby McFerrin. During those years, he also collaborated with ECM producer Manfred Eicher in a series of dark, introspective works. The '90s found Darling continuing to challenge musical boundaries. His score for the 1992 Wim Wenders movie Until the End of the World drew great acclaim, as did his solo recordings of that decade, including 1993's The Tao of Cello and Dark Wood, which feature Darling's renowned improvisational skills. At the turn of the century, Darling did two albums for Relaxation Music's Musical Massage series: Musical Massage: In Tune and Musical Massage: Balance. He also recorded Cello Blue for Hearts of Space in 2001. ~ Heather Phares, Rovi

I don't know if I fell into David Darling or he fell onto me. I thought I had experienced every emotion, oh.... What your music does to me. Divine Splendor!
Instant stress removal! Rosicrucian student for life.
Lol. Wow that's sad that the bio got mixed up. Oh well. Pretty music

This bio is completely WRONG. Its says David Darling was born William Oliver Swofford, and other things, that are completely incorrect. They have confused two musicians. Its thanks to Wikipedia that I figured this out.
um. this picture isn't a picture of david darling...
not only is it totally disorienting to read someone else's bio for an artist i love, it is deeply disquieting to then read of their death. how do we get pandora to fix this mix up?

i met david darling last year in September at a wedding. he is a powerful musician with a quiet spirit and very humble. i didn't know him or his music before that wedding. i am grateful to the married couple for this musician.
Yes, he is indeed very much alive.

David Darling is very much alive still and the above bio is for someone entirely different. It reminds me of the quote reports of my death are greatly exaggerated

This was obviously writtten quite a while ago, as it fails to mention two of his most well-known albums: Eight-String Religion and Prayer for Compassion. He was awarde the Grammy for best new-age album for the latter in 2010. Another of his notable accomplishme n t s was the founding of Music for People, an organization that promotes improvisatio n for self-express i o n .
Very smooth cut - Lady Child's Dream. Hope to hear more.
David Darling will always be my favorite dream artist, the finest cello player, he expresses so much through his instrument. It just sends me.
I play him for my Massage Therapy practice clients alot.
I just heard a song from the 8 string religion disc, heavenly, just beautiful... . m u s i c like this baths the spirit in a soothing light.
David Darling really introduced me to cello music when I first heard The Winter Consort's "Road" album back around 1974. Until then I had never thought about the cello at all. I still believe him to be among the greatest cellist's I have ever heard.

Ive heard his songs hundreds of times and I never tire of them.

Proud to say I went to high school with David Darling. He was a wonderful musician then, and has grown into a true American treasure.

I was given a CD by Darling from my Tai Chi instructor over a year ago, the "Cobra" CD w/Lady Child's Dream. I have played this CD on a continuous loop all night, go to sleep to it; wake up to it. Peaceful; Tranquil; Wonderful sounds.
2010 Grammy. Beautiful musician. Masterful improvisatio n teacher. Fully human and delightful guy.

David just won a grammy this year and it is about time. A great artist. A great musician. A great teacher and a great man.
"Cello Blue" is Darling's best CD.
I did some workshops with him in the late 80's. Great musician and down to earth guy.
I have a CD that David did on the ECM label in 1992 entitled, "Cello". It is so beautiful. I first came to know David's cello as he would record with Oregon. I knew then he would remain in my music sphere for life. So be it....
David Darling's evocative, haunting, and heart-openin g music is masterful. I have four of his albums, each a favorite.

I love listening to David Darling. He's a particular favorite when I'm trying to relax or concentrate.

The Gallery collaboratio n was with Paul McCandless and Dave Samuels not Ralph Towner. It is a brilliant ECM LP, thus far not issued on CD which is a great shame. Some excellent music! David Darling does appear on Ralph Towner's Old Friends, New Friends, also very nice.
Great music to work by or just decompress. It doesn't get much better.
