For a very brief time in 1964, it seemed that the biggest challenger to the Beatles' phenomenon was the Dave Clark Five. From the Tottenham area of London, the quintet had the fortune to knock "I Want to Hold Your Hand" off the top of the British charts with "Glad All Over," and were championed (for about 15 minutes) by the British press as the Beatles' most serious threat. They were the first British Invasion band to break in a big way in the States after the Beatles, though the Rolling Stones and others quickly supplanted the DC5 as the Fab Four's most serious rivals. The Dave Clark Five reached the Top 40 17 times between 1964 and 1967 with memorable hits like "Glad All Over," "Bits and Pieces," "Because," and a remake of Bobby Day's "Over and Over," as well as making more appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show than any other English act. The DC5 were distinguished from their British contemporaries by their larger-than-life production, Clark's loud stomping drum sound, and Mike Smith's leathery vocals. Though accused by detractors of lacking finesse and hipness, they had a solid ear for melodies and harmonies and wrote much of their early material, the best of which endured quite well. Interestingly, and unusually for that era, bandleader Dave Clark managed and produced the band himself, negotiating a much higher royalty rate than artists of that period usually received. After a couple years of superstardom, the group proved unable to either keep up with the changing times or maintain a high standard of original compositions, and called it quits in 1970. ~ Rick Clark & Richie Unterberger, Rovi
The DC5 Rocked ! Loved their horn section. Too bad popular bands today don't seem to have any musicians, composers and arrangers as part of their makeup.
I understand Dave Clark isn't the nicest guy or most generous guy around, when Mike Smith was having all his issues and really needed some help, his fans came to his aid, but Dave Clark was silent- I think Dave Clark had a little money to help his old singer - no DC5 without Mike Smith
Love these guys, they bring me back way back. I grew up with this music at a tender age 13 yrs old.

I grew up with the Beatles and DC5.... no way in hell did I think they sounded like the Beatles!!
DC5 had their own distinct sound - Which was freaking awesome....
Well, it is natural that the DC5 is compaired to the Beatles. This song and many other DC5 songs sound so much like the Lennon and McCartney that many people think the songs are Beatles songs. It is hard to believe that was more by design than by coincidence.
I have to confess that for a long time, I thought Lennon/McCartney were writing songs for the DC5
Oh my God do you have any idea what a score this was back in the 60's to find this 45 at the platter store? F>U>C>K ARRP ha ha ha

Bobby Graham was a great drummer. Isn't that him playing the drums for Dave in the studio?

I saw the DC5 in 1966 & they were great . To see the Band that came out after the Beatles & the DC5's stage act was well worth it. Saw Mike Smith as a solo was also very good . Miss them & their music .Belonged to their fan club til 1971 when it folded.
Dave Clark the founder decided that the band would not go on and they disbanded in the late 60's by choice. That's how come they did not last longer, it was by choice.
The Dave Clark 5 will always be compared to the Beatles because after the Beatles hit, the DC5 were the NEXT successful band coming over from England...No w almost 5o years later...its an obvious mismatch...b u t at the time 1965-66-67, people were just as eager to see Dave Clark and Mike Smith as they were to see John Lennon and Paul McCartney

The DC5 definitely were on the Ed Sullivan show - and more than once!
DC5 and the Beatles are completely different and shouldn't be compared. Comparing them doesn't do them justice. Both have their own styles, both are legitimate. Either of them didn't try to be like the other. As for the Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame? ABBA has been inducted. Useless way to gage music's worth.
This Pandora Bio really needs to be revised. Although not as significant as the Beatles or the Beach Boys; any band in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame(not even mentioned) deserves a more in-depth profile. Far too dismissive.
Thomas - I was watching an Ed Sullivan "Best of" documentary on the public tv station where I live, and the DC 5 was not on? Did the band ever get to play on The Ed Sullivan Show? It seemed as though every other, band English and American, was on that show.

Anybody remember these guys on the Ed Sullivan Show!?
Always liked the DC5 way better than the Beatles. Although they had some ballads....most of their songs were hard rockers....like Glad All Over, Bits and Pieces,Any Way You Want It, and I Like It Like That. I think it was the saxophone in their music that distinguished their stuff from others.

The music is pretty good. I consider them "the forgotten band of the British Invasion". No one even remembers them. It's funny how something can be fashionable one moment, and forgotten the next.
I remember hearing the DC5 way back in '64 and thinking THEY WERE THE BEATLES! They had some good songs back in the day but by '67, for all intents and purposes, they were finished. Guess it was because they could keep up with the musical tastes of the times. Too bad!
