Dan Hartman

During the '70s, Dan Hartman was a member of the Edgar Winter Group and was also in Johnny Winter's band for a time. Hartman was also a session musician that supported artists as diverse as Ian Hunter, Stevie Wonder, Todd Rundgren, and Ronnie Montrose. After releasing one undistinguished solo pop/rock album in 1976, he hit the big time with the fine disco album, Instant Replay. Its follow-up, Relight My Fire, wasn't as successful and Hartman retreated to the studio, producing .38 Special, the Average White Band, and James Brown; he was behind the board for Brown's comeback hit, "Living in America," in 1986. Hartman had one more hit in 1985 with the pop-soul "I Can Dream About You." Again, his follow-ups weren't successful and he returned to producing. He was preparing a new album at the time of his death in March of 1994. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi

Dan Hartman originally wrote, "I Can Dream About You" for Daryl Hall and John Oates. After they turned it down, Dan recorded it himself. Luckily, it was picked up by the music director for the hit movie, "Dirty Dancing" because it fit the vibe and sound of the time period the movie was set. After Hartman succumbed to AIDS in 1994, Hall and Oates took another look at the song, reworked it, and recorded it in 2005, putting it on their 2005 cd, "Our Kind of Soul".

Listening to Dan Hartman took me back to the 70's, levis', concert tee shirts', long hair, and a great time to be a teenager!

"I Can Dream About You" Such a romantic song! It expresses that heartfelt longing for someone until you're with them again. It brings back such good memories, back when 80's music RULED! I also think of nothing but the movie it was made for "STREETS OF FIRE". Great movie! Like an 80's version of West Side Story.

I was very saddened by this artists' passing....h e was one of my all-time favorites. When I heard this song in "The Five Heartbeats" film, I thought he was African-Amer i c a n (seriously). R.I.P., Dan.
