Dada

With their clean pop sound, catchy melodies, and clever lyrics, some journalists labeled Dada the Police of the '90s, although the trio wasn't as musically adventurous as that group. Nevertheless, the band's debut record, 1992's Puzzle, was an updated version of the polished guitar pop that the Police pioneered in the early '80s. On the strength of the single "Dizz Knee Land," the group earned a fair amount of press and sold a number of records. When they delivered their second album, American Highway Flower, in 1994, Dada wasn't able to capitalize on the promise of their debut and the record slipped off the charts soon after its release. 1996's El Subliminoso met a similar fate; their self-titled fourth LP followed two years later. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi

Need to include A Friend of Pat Robertson single - my fave!

Saw them 3 times - the 1st was one of the best concerts ever. The crowd was so over the top into it they didn't let them stop... They seemed to have so much fun playing and they simply ran out of songs to play. Finally one of their rodees came out and sang Back in Black to end the show.
dada got on my radar cuz of dizz knee land... great song

I saw these guys open for The Police in Anaheim, Ca. back in '92....'93 maybe. Geez they were great! I agree with 'clfrazer' that I still listen to them often and still thoroughly enjoy! I remember the first time I heard 'Dorina' at 4:30am while warming up my work truck to drive to escondido (1 1/2 hours) totally blew me away! I went out and bought the cassette that night. I didn't take it out of my stereo for at least 2 weeks. Great band and absolutely underrated!
Easily one of the most overlooked bands of all time. Just plain solid all around - great lyrics, fun SoCal vibe with an edge, & incredible musical chops from all 3 guys. Some songs are just fun (i.e.-Poster s , Gogo, Guitar Girl), while others are more mellow (i.e.-Moon, Heaven & Nowhere) & still others just rock (i.e.-Sick in Santorini, Crumble). They even throw in somepolitica l satire now & then. This is one of those bands that I can continually listen to & never tire of. Every album can be
Perhaps the most under rated rock band of all time. Forget how great they all play and sing-the songs are amazing. And like snowflakes, (or the Beatles) no two are alike.
One of my favorite bands ever! I've seen them in concert a few times, in the early days, and recently- they ROCK!!! Definitely I would want their music on my desert island! They are an incredibly gifted trio of musicians, they should have been at least as popular as the Police!
used to catch these guys in the clubs of OC in the early daze, most recently in Tampa but that was yrs ago. Their music still sounds tight and crispy clean today as ever. The Police were great in their time. These guys are still great 23 years later. Looking for something new by them, no luck so far. Pretty girls still make graves...... . .

Just saw them live last night.. Amazing show.. Wish they played more of their stuff on this channel instead of just a select few..
Need to add American Highway Flower to discography. . . . .
simply some of the smoothest sweetest finest modern rock ever....
Dada was the T O P T R I O , instrumental and lyrical . Anybody better out there by now?
Dada definitely should have been much bigger. These guys had so much talent and originality it's ridiculous. Unfortunatel y they got a double whammy...Mik e Gurley's wrist/arm problems and their record label going under. The best live band in their day...great vocs and Mike was an absolute monster strat player.
this biographer has his head up his a**...The Police?? Really??? the only similarity is they both have 3 members in the band. Dada is a great band on their own and need no comparisons. Love all their stuff! Should have been much bigger.
I hate hip-hop it's the laziest and weakest attempt to make crap into music.
wow, this needs to be updated/rewr i t t e n ! this is really a piss-poor biography. and the discography is severely lacking. Dada always gets bumrushed for being such a talented group of musicians... : - (

ADD EL SUBLIMINOSO! ! ! ! Bob The Drummer ROCKS!
iv-davidson
to ben miller, i agree with francis, you suck. and dada is one of the greatest bands to come out of the 90's, they may be underground but still great
ben sucks
dada had 2 cds out before puzzle -- fw
mrsmith51
need to add album El Subliminoso
Is Jim White part of this trio???
never heard of em and i was a teen in the 90s and a total grunge fanatic, pretty sad, they must really suck
shudda been huge
continued from below..music i a n s h i p and the searing mutated solo's there won't be any. If being eclectic is a crime they should get life. the beauty of Pandora is that it has made it apparent most people have dramatically diverse taste in music. This is good. But you don't have to listen to 2 dozen bands of dramatically divergent styles to get that experience, just listen to Dada. Stephen Thomas Erlewine is either misinformed or really stupid.
holy crap did you guys miss the mark on this one! This band has more eclecticisit y ( I know that's not a word) in their collective little finger than the Police ever had. don't get me wrong, the Police were my favorite band back then, creatively brilliant etc. However Dada replaced them as my favorite band and never lost that spot. Their only crime is being too eclectic and totally un-categoriz a b l e . Listen to any two songs from any 2 albums and try to find the commonality. Except for spectacula
Jesus Christ. This is pathetic, but a good example of how our standards have plummeted if these jokers are being taken at all seriously. It's depressing, actually.
great songs, great hooks great live show. whatmore could you ask for
Where is Green Henry or Mary Sunshine Rain? Perhaps two of the catchiest songs I've ever heard. I love this band.

I saw a blog that claimed Dada to be the greatest rock group since the Beatles. Arguable, but possible. They are certainly one of the most underrated and underappreci a t e d groups as michael kim ross says (see below).
awesome group....hav e loved them from the beginning. lets hear more on Pandora. Saw them in concert and tonymerendin o is so right....the s e 3 guys can make some noise and ROCK!
seeing a trend in all the posts? Good, because it's true. Excellent band, catchy hooks, excellent musicianship (drummer played with blue man group for a bit!) It's sad they are so underappreci a t e d . "Dim" could easily have been a hit off puzzle, too bad they didn't release it. They're live stuff is also terrific.
Where are the other dada releases? Earth to Pandora - Earth to Pandora! I want to hear "8-Track".
Just recently saw them in Boston, great show, 2nd time I've seen them and they never disappoint. even played one from Buterfly Jones (Mike and Phil side project) It's cool dude, and yes it was.
tonymerendin o
The Best.... People that love great music are always immpressed when I turn them on to DaDa. Six CD changer in my car, 5 DaDa and one for a variety. In concert.... No other three guys can make noise like this...The Best.
one of the best rock trios EVER.
I went to see these guys live in Orange County. Michael Gurley is an amazing guitarist. It's hard to believe he has carpal tunnel syndrome. At the performance, he stepped on a table, picked up a water bottle, and used it as his pick for one of the solos. It was pretty amazing.

All in all, great band. One of the most underrated bands of the 90's. They're more than "the band that did Dizz Knee Land".

It's too bad that Pandora used the synopsis from that curmudgeon Stephen Thomas Erlewine at AMG to describe the phenomenon that is dada. What an unfair characteriza t i o n of their music! Hard to believe that it's only a trio putting out all that sound on a song like "Who You Are" (off of Puzzle).
rod249
These guys are unbelievable , especially in concert, rocking out energeticall y for hours. All their albums, even the latest stuff, is fantastic: they're lyrically clever, have retro-influe n c e d harmonies and melodic style that's nonetheless all their own, and they're all virtuoso players, particularly guitarist extraordinai r e Michael Gurley. If the music world would just listen past "Dizz Knee Land" and "Dorina" -- great songs, but only scratch the surface. The more you listen, the more you lov
mdolphin88
Gorgeous harmonies, thoughtful lyrics, and kick-a** guitar riffs are just some of the reasons I continue listening to Dada, and wonder why more people don't!
Over looked by the main stream crowds, Dada is one of the greatest bands to withstand the last decade and a half. Still releasing albums and touring, they captivate everyone that gives them the time of day.

I LOVE DADA! I saw dada's performance at the coach house last saturday and I still can't stop thinking about it. Here today, Gone Tomorrow and Ask the Dust were stand outs and Spirit of 2009 when Michael Girly came out in the alien costume...th a t was hilarious.
