Curve

Considering Curve's towering monolith of guitar noise, dance tracks, dark goth, and airy melodies, it's strange that their two core members -- guitarist Dean Garcia and vocalist Toni Halliday -- met through David Stewart of Eurythmics. Halliday met Stewart while she was a teenager and they remained friends for years; Garcia played on several Eurythmics records. The two played together in State of Play, who released one album and two singles in the late '80s to little notice. After the failure of that band, Garcia and Halliday parted ways, only to reunite at the beginning of the '90s. Renaming themselves Curve, Halliday and Garcia released three EPs that became independent hits in 1991. Although they were critically acclaimed as well, some members of the U.K. press attacked Halliday for not being a genuine member of the indie scene. Despite the negative press, their next EP and first album, 1992's Doppelganger, hit number one on the U.K. indie charts.

By the time of the following year's Cuckoo, Curve had added two guitarists and a drummer, with Garcia moving to bass. Cuckoo was noisier and more experimental than their previous releases, although it did have a couple of pop songs that were tighter than their usual singles. However, the album didn't make as big of a splash in the U.K. as previous releases; Curve split several months after its release, only to re-form in 1996 with the Pink Girl with the Blues EP. The full-length Come Clean followed a year later and "Coming Up Roses became a moderate hit on college radio. Three years later, Curve issued the Internet-only Open Day at the Hate Fest. This album collected MP3s and B-sides and was a limited-edition package for eager fans awaiting a proper studio album. After battling contractual obligations with Estupendo/Universal, Curve returned to form for 2001's Gift, their fourth album in ten years. Another self-released disc came in 2002, and a two-disc compilation entitled The Way of Curve followed in 2004. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi

Someone told me on YouTube that Kevin Shields did guitar work on Mission from God. Very dreamy, yet dancey, head nod worthy with that whammy guitar groove
They are pioneers mood- and tech-wise, but those elements were always there. They were criticized for not being truly indy, but that's just bollocks; indy is a new buzz word, a label. It's more of a state of mind and mode than scene. Ironically, they've amassed quite a following over the past 20-odd years. Heard them first on new wave alternative radio, WLIR/WDRE and college radio. 10 little girls pulled me in and I've been in love ever since.
Saw them @ Irving Plaza, like 93 or 95, after Cuckoo. Wish that I saw their later stuff live!

Don't read this because it actually works. You will be kissed on the nearest possible Friday by the love of you life. Tomorrow will be the best day of your life. However if you don't post this you will die in 2 days. Now you've started reading so don't stop. This is so scary put this on at least 5 songs in 143 minutes. When done press f6 and your lover's name will come on the screen in big letters. This is so scary because it actually works

Coming up Roses is so boss. Love, love, love that song!
I like Coming Up Roses by Curve.

Clipped was the first song I heard by them how come underrated seems way more better than overrated crap they put out
This band should have been arena giants, each song is a layered bloom of organic rhythm, drums and drum machines fighting each other just so, and precise, cutting lyrics. Their last unreleased songs were: Weekend, a serious a** shaker with a rolling bass line that demands to be played live, and Some Good Some Bad, typical contradictor y hypnotic Curve with Toni purring all I want is some good with my bad, all I want is some bad with my good...
Toni and Dean are both releasing solo material.
They never could quite repeat the brilliance of Doppelganger but a nice body of work

One of my Favs of all time
Love Curve so much.
Garbage. Other people create there music. They wish they were 1% of what curve is. Curve f**kn rocks. Hands down.
i loved Helen's face i knew her voice was familiar in showgirls movie song!
love curve -- than ya love garbage!!

On my IPOD drop.. Love this song..
why can't they get proper album art for doppelganger ? annoys me every time it comes up!!
kahupaints
i love me some Curve!! Pubic Fruit=fave --so happy I got to see them live in the 90's in Seattle. One of the best shows I've ever been to!! I LOVE their attitudes, too. Dean is so real and funny. Toni is a dream to look at, listen to and speaking with her was amazing. Smart, talented, beautiful souls.
Check out Dean Garcia's solo work. Before the Secret Meeting. Beautiful, distinctive. They were pioneers. Unreadable communicatio n is a brilliant, dark jewel. I miss them as well!
Doppleganger is one of my top fav albums. Definitely a take with me to a deserted island. I only wish there was more.
Did she convert to Hinduism?
they need to add chinese burn from come clean so my pandora will play it!
If you like Curve check out the song Horror Head, amazing!!!

wow im amazed that these guys had such a great sound back in '93 this kind of industrial/g o t h sound didn't really mainly surface till a bit later. wonder if they were pioneers
Does anyone know of any DVD's of their videos, besides Youtubes crappy quality.??
I would love to see their videos or live performances remastered for HD Blue ray.
I think Dopp is their best album.
to animusstudo- She's has a project called Chatelaine. It isn't nearly as compelling as far as the heaviness or dance sounds that Curve sometimes invoked, but it's deep. Definately worth checking out
What is she doing now?
Despite all my love for Toni, Fans of Curve Should search out these two of Dean's projects/col l a b e r a t i o n s - KGC & The Secret Meeting. Both are great listens!

brilliant noise

thought they were dead
I think I'm starting to get hooked on Curve. Toni has an absolutely mesmerizing voice.
after all these years Curve is still better than all the sound alikes.
I love Curve and feel lucky to have seen them twice. Frozen (on Pubic Fruit) just cuts me down every time, really fantastic music. I echo all the props for Döppelganger and Cuckoo but also think their "reformation " albums are great (except for the final one, The New Adventures of Curve, I found a bit wanting). Fans should check out Echobelly's first two albums (EGO and On), where you'll immediately recognize ex-Debbie Smith's scathing guitar.
Curve... I miss them. Sigh... along with a lot of 90's bands. When will the tide turn back??? I had a big crush on Toni Halliday once I saw the video to "Horror Head". And Doppelganger ROCKED my little world ! Got to see them live twice and loved both shows (Atlanta and Phoenix, different tours)
I like Garbage as well as Curve....Gar b a g e has more pop sensibility to me. Curve is more experimental and a tad darker.
One of my favorites.
This band destroys garbage
horror head is one of my all time favorite songs. and thats saying a lot.
gift just came on my station...

If I didn't know Garbage as well as I do, I would have sworn it was. Halliday sounds almost exactly like Shirley Manson, and the guitar/techn o i s h styles between the two bands sound a lot alike as well. Even the outros sound the same!

Good thing I like Garbage :).

Lol.. and as I type this, a Garbage song comes on.
rwcupp
Pubic Fruit is an excellent album, though I don't see it listed in the selected discography. If you haven't already heard it, find some samples of it.
Don't forget Scylla! Helens' Face is one hell of a song - and the rest of the demos are good as well.
Great band, been following them since their beggining.
Curve is badass
Good recommendati o n s , folks.
You must get a copy of RADIO SESSIONS. I love all things curve, but this is so raw and real. A great departure from the normal album sound.
I love Curve. I started with Cuckoo, but Doppleganger is possibly my favorite album.
I disagree somewhat... Doppelganger is an excellent album for the uninitiated, still my favorite. If possible, get the music from their early EP's, like "Cherry".
Curve is the band I try to get every one of my friends to listen to. Curve dwell at the luscious intersection of My Bloody Valentine and the Eurythmics, with lots of inventive complexity in each of their albums... start with Cuckoo, and go on from there...
