The Crusaders

Back in 1954, Houston pianist Joe Sample teamed up with high school friends tenor saxophonist Wilton Felder and drummer Stix Hooper to form the Swingsters. Within a short time, they were joined by trombonist Wayne Henderson, flutist Hubert Laws, and bassist Henry Wilson and the group became the Modern Jazz Sextet. With the move of Sample, Felder, Hooper, and Henderson to Los Angeles in 1960, the band (a quintet with the bass spot constantly changing) took on the name of the Jazz Crusaders. The following year they made their first recordings for Pacific Jazz and throughout the 1960s the group was a popular attraction, mixing together R&B and Memphis soul elements with hard bop; its trombone/tenor frontline became a trademark. By 1971, when all of the musicians were also busy with their own projects, it was decided to call the group simply the Crusaders so it would not be restricted to only playing jazz. After a few excellent albums during the early part of the decade (with guitarist Larry Carlton a strong asset), the group began to decline in quality. In 1975, the band's sound radically changed when Henderson departed to become a full-time producer. 1979's "Street Life" was a hit, but also a last hurrah. With Hooper's decision to leave in 1983, the group no longer sounded like the Crusaders and gradually disbanded. In the mid-'90s, Henderson and Felder had a reunion as the Crusaders but in reality only Joe Sample has had a strong solo career. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi

This will make you dance ole Skool lov it lov it
The first time I heard the Crusaders in1968 I was 18 and I love them then
One of the all time best groups, mixing jazz, funk & R&B at a level others attempted to achieve. Listening to the Crusaders always left you feeling better than when you started.
Wilton Felder was in constant demand as a session player for decades past, and during his reign with the Crusaders. Much of his contracted work has him strumming the Bass. Larry Carlton became one of the THE most sought after jazz guitarists (incl. work with Joni Mitchell and Steely Dan), producing some excellent solo work as well.
The longing for something more than pure Jazz, R&B, Blues was nurtured in my soul starting with the Crusaders and moving along with Ronnie Laws, David Sanborn, George Benson, Bob James and more but, definitely started with The Crusaders.
Loved the band from the first moment I heard them!!!
Pure Funk! Ever hear Wayne play Brahm's Lullaby? It would bring tears to your eyes. A much underrated band. Felder's playing is like an old pair funky shoes...Fit' s so well!
Yeah I feel it. Take U bake to the good old days, like today!!!! ;-)
Born and raised on 60's & 70's FM Radio Rock but always had a special spot for the Crusaders- Under-rated cross over appeal here best listened to on old school vinyl.
This represents Htown and our soul swing and sound to the fullest. Its not Memphis Soul it's Texas Soul RnB with Funk Blues and Hard Bop that these masters did so equally well
So many creative forces came out of this compilation! ! !
My days watching movies about pimps and players in the real street game..The name of game is to be sold not told.
The Crusaders , FireIsland N.Y.summer of 1970 something... . d o e s n t get much better then that.

Wow! Jazz Crusaders or Crusaders I hear them in my SLEEP. I have also enjoyed them since they started recording and that's a long long time. Their music never gets old. It's way funky. I love it and when its playing my neighbors love it too.

Was introduced to the Crusaders in the late 70's and became a fan instantly. Their funky jazz was so refreshing.
