New Orleans metal band Crowbar was originally comprised of vocalist/guitarist Kirk Windstein, guitarist Matt Thomas, bassist Todd Strange, and drummer Craig Numenmacher. Once known as the Slugs, the band's slow, grinding, heavy sound has alternately been tagged sludge metal and sludgecore, and has drawn comparisons both vocally and musically to Pantera, the Melvins, and Tad. Debuting in 1992 with Obedience Through Suffering, they subsequently signed to Pavement Music and issued albums including 1993's Crowbar and 1995's Time Heals Nothing. Drummer Numenmacher subsequently left the band, and was temporarily replaced by Jimmy Bower, also the rhythm guitarist for kindred spirits Eyehategod. Bower also played drums in Down, a side project for Pantera's Phil Anselmo and Corrosion of Conformity's Pepper Keenan that also featured Crowbar's Windstein and Strange. Guitarist Sammy Pierre Duet, formerly of Acid Bath, joined up for 1996's Broken Glass following the departure of original guitarist Thomas. Bower elected to re-focus on Eyehategod after playing on 1998's Odd Fellows Rest, and was replaced by drummer Sid Montz for 2000's Equilibrium. That association proved short-lived, however; original drummer Numenmacher rejoined later that year, around the same time that bassist Strange called it a career. ~ Steve Huey, Rovi

Odd fellows rest is my favorite album by these dudes too.

They need to add some more Crowbar CD's on here. Odd Fellows Rest is there best CD (in my opinion), Equilibrium is a really good listen, and Sonic Excess in its Purest Form is friggin awesome.
lol... i too love this band and some of the bands that are in "sludge core" but the names of some of these bands cracks me up. GOATWHORE??? SERIOUSLY? im not knocking their music or their name but how in the hell could someone come up with "GOATWHORE"?? wow...lol
The thing I always remember about Crowbar is that it's the band with the fat dudes. A lot of puns about "heavy" music come to mind...
But the song "No Longer Can We Crawl". That title is a pun in itself. Can't even crawl anymore? Go on a diet!
Thats bad a** hagglefish. It is truly a spiritual endeavor to be part of an up and coming genre of music that you love and very few people outside of their/your immediate area has any clue of who these bands were at the time that you were involved so closely with. It is few and far between that very many people are as lucky as you were to be able to claim this.

THE SLUGS! F**k ya! It was a pleasure being in the midst of the whirlwind that was Crowbar/CoC/Down/eyehategod/Goatwhore/Acid Bath/Clearlight. Those were some great times in the New Orleans music scene. 2 Interesting sidenotes: Jimmy Bower = my best friend's cousin. My bass player used Todd Strange's old Mesa Boogie cabs/Crate heads setup for our live shows.
Hey Matt why don't you go f**k yourself and shut your mouth. No one is talking about the gay s**t you like, so why are you opening your c*m filled mouth to tell us what you think????
Planets Collide is my favorite song from them and I wish it was on here!

THIS BAND SUCKS HOW CAN YOU CALL THIS S**T MUSIC?? THE DUDE SOUNDS LIKE A RETARD SCREAMING INTO THE MIC.........BUT IF THAT'S WHAT YA LIKE GO HEAD YOU'RE ONLY HURTING YOURSELF...
no, i don't think so. Kirks now ex-wife is named Nichole and they are recently divorced. plus ol' crazy azz Phil probably, if not too high, would allow such madness. i have read that kirk is Opals brother. hope i helped.

Is Kirk Windstein married to Stephanie Opal Winsdtein(Phil Anselmos ex) or are they related does anybody know?
I think the reviewer has it backwards: Other bands should be measured against Crowbar. Melvins? Tad? For God's sake, no comparison! The only one of the bands this review mentions that can hold a candle to Crowbar is Pantera, and even that isn't much of a comparison. Can't argue against Pantera (they deserve their reputation), but Crowbar is a different kind of beast, I think.
Great Sludgecore! Kirk sounds like he is in agony, that is what makes the musik awesome - no need to even mention the incredible riffs...just heavy as a truck full of concrete.

Crowbar's crushing slow groove NOLA sludge sound is now legendary.

But the song "No Longer Can We Crawl". That title is a pun in itself. Can't even crawl anymore? Go on a diet!
