Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young

The musical partnership of David Crosby, Stephen Stills, and Graham Nash, with and without Neil Young, was not only one of the most successful touring and recording acts of the late '60s, '70s, and early '80s (with the colorful, contrasting nature of the members' characters and their connection to the political and cultural upheavals of the time), it was the only American-based band to approach the overall societal impact of the Beatles.

The group was a second marriage for all the participants when it came together in 1968: Crosby had been a member of the Byrds, Nash was in the Hollies, and Stills had been part of Buffalo Springfield. The resulting trio, however, sounded like none of its predecessors and was characterized by a unique vocal blend and a musical approach that ranged from acoustic folk to melodic pop to hard rock. Crosby, Stills & Nash, released in 1969, was perfectly in tune with the times, and the group proved an instant hit. By the time of their first tour (which included the Woodstock festival), they had added Young, also a veteran of Buffalo Springfield, who maintained a solo career.

The first CSNY album, Déjà Vu, was a chart-topping hit in 1970, but the group split acrimoniously after a summer tour. Four Way Street, a live double album issued after the breakup, was another number one hit. In 1974, CSNY re-formed for a summer stadium tour without releasing a new record -- nevertheless, the compilation So Far became their third straight number one. Crosby, Stills & Nash re-formed without Young in 1977 for the album CSN, another giant hit. They followed with Daylight Again in 1982, but by then Crosby was in the throes of drug addiction and increasing legal problems. He was in jail in 1985-1986, but cleaned up and returned to action, with the result that CSNY reunited for only their second studio album, American Dream, in 1988.

CSN followed with Live It Up in 1990, and though that album was a commercial disappointment, the trio remained a popular live act; it embarked on a 25th anniversary tour in the summer of 1994 and released a new album, After the Storm. The trio again reunited with Young for 1999's Looking Forward, followed in 2000 by their CSNY2K tour. A DVD/CD set, CSN 2012, was filmed and recorded during a 2012 tour, and released that same year. ~ William Ruhlmann, Rovi

I saw Crosby Stills and Nash live at a small venue in Jacksonville , Oregon in 2008. After all the years of playing and singing wonderful songs, they didn't miss a lick and sounded better than ever. With this small outdoors venue, the concert seemed very personal, like they were playing just for you.
Peace!

Sing it Neil
4 way street is the best...I only have one following, but thanks for all your comments. YOU GUYS ROCK! ! !

The memories...l i f e was good!
Takes me back when things were simple... Days were long, my time was my own life was pure ... CSNY ...
Young really makes the band for me. The songs without him just don't have IMO.
Well I guess lmjr_1 fails to see the hypocrisy of some of the so called spokesmen of a generation. Good thing CSN & Y made such great music, they look like stooges today when they talk politics.
lmjr_1
Despite the comment below, we are talking about music here. Not D@Rs. It has nothing to do with that. In a world, non American ethnocentric world, there is no difference between D@Rs. So shame on you bobonnit!
CSN&Y were a very politically inspired band and did have some impact upon the youth culture at the time. Unfortunatel y they began to over imagine their importance in that category. Too many drugs must have addled their brains, they are supporters now of a President who is just as corrupt as Nixon (and without the Foreign Policy expertise) but they are OK with it because he has a (D) in front of his name. Shame upon them.

Neil Young is a musical great. Ohio was written in about 15 minutes by Young after he saw the news of the Kent State massacre.
Crosby is great

Shame on Pandora, Stephen Stills and all his fans for allowing Stephen Stills to be credited with Michael Bloomfield's work on the great Super Session album...Stil l s did not play on the tracks "Really" and "Stop"! These are all Bloomfield and Al Kooper. ..
S**t! I've been missing out by not listening to this band sooner. Just heard 4+20 and its a great song. Time to search for more....
Great Album!!!!!
All You CSNY Fans How About Manassas, They Were The Most Versatile Outfits in Rock History. See Also Stephen Stills Manassas. Also The Flying Burrito Brothers. It All Goes Back To The Byrds And Buffalo Spring field.
Sad that this movement amounted to nothing
I once bought Deja Vu used on vinyl and it had a different CSN record in it without Young. That was a trip when I got home to play it.
love the band, but I wouldn't put them at the top of American bands. That spot is reserved for the likes of the Grateful Dead, whose longevity and diversity gives them a much stronger claim. The other band that I would put ahead of CSNY is The Band, for the same reasons. But for pure hippie pop and southern Cali hipness and political awareness, CSNY were fantastic. BTW, CSN's first album is really great, and Neil, while a great artist himself, didn't make them much better, imho.
What a great album. Vintage heaven"

Wow I almost cut my hair !!!!

David, Iknow what youknow. We are IAM. Thank you.
The absolute best version of this song. I played the entire double album until it was all pops and hisses. I literally cried with joy when the album was released on cd. You are forever young Neil.
Wooden Ships for a company vid? Way to go Sanchez...I like that!
Favorite band in my 20s .
All four; David Crosby, Stephen Still, Graham Nash and Neil Young
for me are one of the best group all times, rock band of America to
the World as the Beatles were for UK. Individually and within the group
they played perfect perfectly, for example lets take Graham Nash
with Immigration Man Song, Gunivere, Stephen Stills, Black Queen
David Crosby, On the Delta River, Neil Young Heart of Gold and
Southern man, I remember using the song of Wooden Ships for a
Company Video.

Niel influences so many groups in differing genres.

This is a Niel Young song. Niel is what made them great and they rode on that for decades. Niel is better by himself than the group is together. CSN are nothing but a bunch of over produced pop singers for their day. The best thing the rest of them could do was harmonize on the Niel Young refrains. they were nothing without Niel. the proff is in the pudding. The other three are has beens. Just slightly more than one hit wonders while Niel has endured and evolved on his own terms.

What mind can possibly come up with this line of thought? Thankz!
Re: OHIO
I saw that Mark but Neil Young wrote it just after Kent State shootings of the 4 students. A unforgetable watermark they played in concert in Baltimore 2 weeks later that nearly caused a riot of urotest against the government, war and military when heard then for the 1st time and the refrain became clear.
I saw on Wiki that it was recorded at Robert Plant's studio, maybe that's the source of the confusion

I love to play most of these songs on stage. I think my favorites are the ones they used different tunings on, i.e., 4+20, Suite: Judy Blue Eyes, Carry On, and the others. Love the D-A-D-D-A-D- , and E-E-E-E-B-E tunings thy used.
Teach your children is one awesome song!
Love Neil Young! love this music!
Neil is a star that will shine even after all the rest have faded out.
Don't read this because it actually works. You will be kissed by your lover on the near seat Friday. Tomorrow will be the bast day of your life. However if you don't post this you will die in two days. Now you've starts reading so don't stop. This is so scary post this on at least 5 songs in 143 minutes. When your done press f6 and your lovers name will come on the screen in big letters. This is so scary because it actually works.

Watching the four guys singing the Woodstock song.Nash did have a say in things and David didn't like a lot of what was being said so, the splits.

I have had the great pleasure Of witnessing thee greatest live concert at white lake from what all I can remember, lol . . I'm in my sixties now and still listen to all the musicians, and music. I was so impressed with how they got everything togther. after i reached a certain age. I was one of those to whom I had to pay for a ticket. Can I get a witness? It sure was a hard time getting to the portapots. either there was a line like a mile long or the dad blame things were over flowing. tdnick....

Me and my Woodstock Buddy TG saw CSN at Woodstock Music & Art Fair, on Sunday August 17th, 1969 at Max Yasgur's farm in White Lake (Bethel), NY. It was their first LIVE gig...we're scared sh*tless per Steve Stills. What a night! What a weekend...44 years ago this past weekend. LIving the Dream!
Nice pedal steel track laid down by Jerry Garcia in one take.

Hello woman of my dreams is this not the way it seems? Dig it
One of my favorite bands!! And I had the privilege of seeing David Crosby with his original liver!! Now there is something to brag about. Gotta go now....time to consume "Purple Berries". Fermented of course.

Crosby, Stills and Nash are truly a great band and I will always respect them. I have listened to them for a very long time, and i will never stop listening to them.
The songs they have written have only gotten more significant and meaningful with the passage of time. The true mark of great art - timeless.
Love the percussion, bass, lead guitars and the melodious harmonies..
