awesome song. i cant believe people would actually think he is referring to gun control though. he was anti war but that doesnt mean he didnt want people to have guns
Very interesting people believe this! Because on recent live version Mr fogerty speaks of this song as a hellish time for this country! Being involed in nam! And that the young people inthe audience may not relate! He also mentions being in the army himself during this time! This song is about Nam no more or less! Ya see the jungle was the death trap for both sides! The millions of guns mentioned, was a metaphor for the firepower being backed by both sides! Hence the jungle being satans playgro
Thank you mr. Fogerty , for your insight and foresight on the inordinate number of guns in this country. I am not anti-gun, but in light of all the senseless rampages recently, this issue of guns needs to be seriously addressed!
I think a lot of people thought that because of the times, but I was talking about America and the proliferation of guns, registered and otherwise. I'm a hunter and I'm not antigun, but I just thought that people were so gun-happy -- and there were so many guns uncontrolled that it really was dangerous, and it's even worse now. It's interesting that it has taken 20-odd years to get a movement on that position.

What bothers me are the two yo-yo's from the original group touring with two other yo-yo's and making money off the songs they had nothing to do with writing. No talent leeches!
Undertones are not, The song is catchy. I liked it back then as I do now. I never thought of 'Nam back then, I just enjoyed the song!!

There are no Vietnam undertones, people assumed this because of the other songs on the album. Its about the proliferation of guns and gun control. Foggerty came out and said it himself
Goodness knows no one can understand Fogerty's vocals on anything. I had no idea it had Vietnam undertones, either. It seems everything had Vietnam undertones then. One of the comments here expresses frustration with current anti-war music but only a few older bands attempted. Concern with anything outside of the small circle of the song's narrator is absent in current music, and that's what makes it so crass, insipid, and forgettable. Just like the writers.
I totally agree with you all! It was a terrible war and even when they came home we still found a way to treat those vets like garbage. I really hope we have learned our lesson from that. I support the troops and I really hope we pull out someday. I hate this war!
I heard this often a few years ago in Pierre, SD at the South Dakota Vietnam Veterans Memorial Commemoration. Quite a scene, with Hueys flying over the parade route.
I am 35 but love this music an anti war song of today does not have the same poetry. For a war against a war at least have some class and not steal the music...err sample it and have the ability to verbalize a real meaning and not just throw crap together and sound pissed off.
I can imagine our boys in Vietnam listening to this as they ran and rode through the jungles all messed up on drugs. It's hard to imagine of how young they were and what our leaders put them through. What a s**tty war that was, and it never ended it seemd to go on for a lifetime and a generation. I was raised by a officer of that war, it wasn't no picnic, they trained those boys to be mean.
