Cowboy Mouth

Cowboy Mouth are a collective of '80s rock & roll survivors -- musicians with slight new wave and alternative connections who have aspired to AOR stardom. Formed in the early '90s after alternative rock had broken into the mainstream, the group fused AOR with alternative and roots rock influences on a handful of indie releases before signing with MCA Records in 1996. Although Cowboy Mouth had trouble remaining on a major label's roster, the band has continued releasing material in the new millennium on a variety of imprints and indie labels.

Paul Sanchez (vocals, guitar) had previously recorded as a solo artist before teaming up with Fred LeBlanc (vocals, drums). The pair formed the Backbeats, who were short-lived. After their breakup, Sanchez moved to New York, where he continued to perform solo. In 1988, he returned to New Orleans; LeBlanc, who had just finished playing with Dash Rip Rock, had Sanchez join his new band. The duo began jamming with Griffith (lead guitar, vocals), who had just left the Red Rockers, a new wave band who had a hit with "China." The trio played with a variety of bassists until 1993, when Rob Savoy -- the former frontman for the Bluerunners -- joined the band. The band released its first album, Mouthing Off, late in 1993 on the independent Viceroy Records. Two years later, they released It Means Escape on the Monkey Hill label.

By 1995, the group's following had grown large enough to earn attention from major labels. Cowboy Mouth decided to sign with MCA in early 1996, and they recorded their major-label debut, Are You with Me?, with producer Michael Wanchic during Mardi Gras of that year. The album was released in the summer of 1996 and charted a hit with "Jenny Says," an older song that the band had reprised for its major-label debut. The following spring, Cowboy Mouth released Live on Monkey Hill; Mercyland appeared a year later, and both All You Need Is Live and Easy followed in 2000. Disappointing sales prompted Atlantic to drop the band after Easy, but Cowboy Mouth, undeterred as always (even with the departure of bassist Rob Savoy), rose to the occasion and released the blistering Uh-Oh on the independent Bayside label the following year. Voodoo Shoppe, which was issued by Eleven Thirty, arrived in 2005. Fearless followed three years later, featuring a spunky ode to TV personality Kelly Ripa. After another three years passed, Cowboy Mouth returned with Mardi Gras, an EP salute to their hometown of the Big Easy. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi

I first saw Cowboy Mouth as a fluke show in Chicago at the House of Blues. The audience had that whole floor vibrating. I was addicted at once. Seen them so many times but I have to say that without Fred in the front it would be the same.
I've seen Green Day multiple times, Tom Petty, Foo Fighters, Iron Maiden, +50 other big name bands. Cowboy Mouth is the only show I will drop everything for and take vacation time for. Love that these guys are still kicking. Making the 4 hour drive to see them over in Minneapolis on July 12! First time I saw them was maybe 15 years ago opening for BNL in Milwaukee, WI and they get better every time for 15+ shows!
Seen them several times, i've caught 4 of Freddy's drumaticks. They're great live!
Love that album Easy! And yes Peter, I argee; i've seen them twice, and they are great live! Keep on rocking, Freddy!!!
The cd's are OK but they kill live...

Still my favorite quote about the most underrated rock-n-roll band ever to play your hometown...C o w b o y Mouth. See y'all at BB King's next Friday.
Cowboy Mouth has saved my life on several occasions. Whenever I'm beaten down and broken by life, these songs bring me back. amazing live show.

Just saw them in Steamboat Springs, Co. just before the Cowboy Downhill. Great show. We'll be listening to them on pandora from now on.
I used to see these guys when the first started out. I was a freshman in college at Louisiana Tech back in 1990 when I first saw them play in a tiny bar off campus. I've been enjoying them ever since.
THe first time i saw them in concert i was on top of the parking tower in down town lafayette and was looking down on the crowd...VERY INTERESTING VIEW...the second time i saw them my som was onstage singng "jenny says" with them...they are an awesome band to see live and their music just kicks all sorts of a**!!!!

Their live shows are something special - they are almost a religious experience - but their studio work is overlooked. Are You With Me is a great record on its own; there are no weak songs in the bunch, and several great ones. I don't know how they sustain the magic of the live shows for fans, but somehow they do it, even after you've seen them several times. As they say, though, the first time is the best, so go see a CM show and enjoy. Your life will be lacking if you don't.

I've seen some pretty big acts, Pink Floyd, McCartney, The Who, Stones, Van Halen (original).. . a l l that just to say Fred and Cowboy mouth is the best live show I have ever seen. They rocked Phoenix!

These guys were our next-room-ne i g h b o r s for a bit at the Fountainblea u (Carrollton and Tulane). Fred came over one night and hopped on my drummer's double bass Rogers kit and beat on em for a bit. Coolest. guys. ever. From then on, we would warm up with a sludgy, heavy version of "Jenny Says" before practice in homage to The Mouth.

I have seen them twice live and they are AMAZING, always a great show!!
I heart Cowboy Mouth! The best live shows I've been to, full of energy and the audience always goes wild!
This band is fantastic and probably the best live band I have ever seen (I agree with the t-shirt!). I recently saw them live in Cleveland and my cheeks hurt from smiling, my throat hurts from screaming and my legs hurt from jumping up and down. I cannot wait to see them again!!

All time favorite band to listen to. Recorded or live!!
Happened upon them at Bele Chere (largest free street fest east of the Mississippi) in Asheville NC this past July. These guys ROCK OUT!! What a voice Fred has!! Made us all happy for far too short a time... crowd went abso-crazy!! !
Great in small venues or large. Just keep rocking on for as long as you will listen. AND if you keep listening they will keep showing you different parts of who they are. I've never seen a boand that could play so many differnet styles of music.
great live band... seeing them at HOB Houston in October.
Seen them live in NC these guys Rock

Paul Sanchez has left the band again and is pursuing a solo career again. Nothing about the split appears overly friendly. Additionally , the band core remains Fred and John Thomas, but the loss of Paul and the inability to hold on to a bass player for longer than one or two albums seems to indicate that the Mouth may soon be closed.
amazing. of all the groups i love, kiss ,rush, etc,th e s e guys are my all time fave
