Legendary Cuban guitarist Compay Segundo was born in 1907; collaborating with the likes of Sindo Garay, Miguel Matamoros and Benny Moré, he emerged as one of the most respected musicians of the pre-revolution era, and in the late '20s invented the armónico, a guitar customized with a double third string to fuse the tonal qualities of the traditional Cuban tres guitar and its Spanish counterpart. Following Fidel Castro's rise to power, Segundo worked as a cigar roller before returning to music during the late '80s; in his early nineties he attracted worldwide attention in 1998 for his contributions to Ry Cooder's wildly successful Buena Vista Social Club album, issuing the solo Calle Salud the following year. Buena Vista Connection was issued in fall 2000. Flores de la Vida followed later that same year; Trova Cubana surfaced in early 2001. The torrent of releases, both new and reissues of classic pre-fame Segundo sessions, continued throughout 2001 with Yo Vengo Aqui, Que Lio Compay Andres and into 2002 with Yo Soy del Monte and Dos Leyendas de Cuba. On July 13 of the following year Compay Segundo died of kidney failure at his home in Havana. ~ Jason Ankeny, Rovi

There still IS much talent in Cuba. And do not forget, Sir, that when Ibrahim Ferrer was nominated for a Grammy, the George W. Bush regime put its boots on throats and denied him a visa to come to the U.S. for that experience. Jerks and Despicables come from all countries, all goverments, and all walks of life. It is good to remember that.

There was much talent in Cuba.....too bad Castro put his boots on their throats. I'm glad some of their music was preserved! Thank you, Pandora!

It must be my Cuban blood - but nothing is as moving as the sounds of Cuban music!
Jason Ankeny forgot completely to mention that Compay Segundo (Francisco Repilado)was the first guitarrist and second voice of worldwide famous El Duo Los Compadres together with Lorenzo Hierrezuelo (Compay Primo), first voice and rythm guitarrist in the first 6 years after its formation.
By the way, Compay Segundo is not singing in this number.
His voice is rather a deep and a smoky one!

His voice is so comfortable...like a nice warm coat.
What an incredible talent, and hopefully an inspiration to us lesser mortals... bendiciones a todos aquellos que comparten su musica con nosotros..

I saw him play (whith his son, I think) in the island of Lanzarote (Canary Islands) several years ago. It was a concert set up in the beach, and a multitude came to hear him. He did not dissapoint anyone. I will never forget the amazing amount of people he made dance all along that beach. He rocked us all.
Cantando me he de morir
Cantando me han de enterrar
Y cantando he de llegar
al pie del Eterno padre
Dende el vientre de mi madre
Vine a este mundo a cantar

Individuals like Segundo are not born anymore. Segundo's DNA should have been saved, to try to create a second human artist like him. May he always be blessed.
Compay was the man! He and Ibrahim Ferrer were spectacular in the Buena Vista Social Club. I only wish Compay had made the US tour in 2004 because the group was awesome!
