Cold Blood

A San Francisco-based R&B band originally formed by guitarist Larry Field as the "New Invaders" in the wake of the Summer of Love, Cold Blood had the key elements of strong female vocalist, a fine guitarist, and a powerful horn section. After successful gigs at Golden Gate Park and at the Fillmore, they were signed by impresario Bill Graham to his new San Francisco Records label, on which they released their self-titled debut in 1969. Four more albums followed over the next five years -- in fact, later efforts boasted the production and musical contributions of Steve Cropper -- but all were hamstrung by Graham's underhanded distribution deals with Columbia and Atlantic.

Though the debut's single "You've Got Me Humming" crawled up to number 52 on the American charts, Cold Blood seemed doomed to labor in the shadow of bands like Tower of Power, Chicago, and especially Janis Joplin. The latter comparison became endemic among critics; for although blues belter joined Field's band as its youngest member -- she had formerly been, of all things, a childhood national rollerskating champion -- her magnetic stage presence established her as the band's central force. Eventually, the band billed itself as Lydia Pense With Cold Blood, and even released an album simply titled Lydia. Joplin sensed a kindred soul; after screaming at Cold Blood for scooping her on a blistering cover of "Piece of My Heart," she warmed to Pense enough to give her a swig of Southern Comfort.

After hitting increasingly lower tier venues in San Francisco by the late '70s, Cold Blood disbanded for most of the next decade; Pense focused her energies on child rearing. By the late '80s, the band slowly awoke from its long sleep, and they began regular features on California's festival and fair circuit. A 1998 return to their Fillmore stomping ground brought out the band's faithful. ~ Paul Collins, Rovi

The first time I saw cold blood was at the fox theater in San Jose I was 13 years old then I saw Lydia pense at the hard disk cafe in Sunnyvale! Anyone else make that Show ? Around 1985
The first time I heard lydia n cold blood was when they were regulars at 'FRENCHY'S ' in Hayward, Calif. 1971.
Lydia was at the McConnel winery in Elk Grove The other weekend in July with Dana Moret with Mr December and there horns. What fun we had, Lydia still is fun and we danced the evening away
Where is FIRST TASTE OF SIN?
Lydia and Cold Blood are something very rare and it does not hurt a bit when you have the Tower of Power horns backing you up.

The drum solo is to Die for...WOW
Rod Ellicot was one of my favorite bassists of that era. I cut my teeth on this album during my formative years. You had to learn that bass solo from Shop Talk to be considered able to play the bass One of my favorite albums they released was First Taste Of Sin and Valdez In The Country penned by the late great Donny Hathaway was my favorite from that particular album. Chalie Holmes..Bass i s t
Played Cold Blood cuts in the early 70s...What great fun!!! Dynamic!!!
I too would love to have new music posted- they were an underexposed band that deserves attention today
Hey Pandora, Cold Blood does have 21st century releases and I've yet to hear any. Their 2005 album Transfusion is marvelous and features a track with Lenny Williams, ex-lead of Tower of Power. And their 2008 album Live Blood is a great representati o n of where they are today. PLUS LYDIA SOUNDS GREAT. They have a new album coming too. PANDORA- CATCH UP!!!!
Love this band and East Bay funk!! Was lucky enough to see Lydia performing with a 4 piece blues band that inlcuded Bruce Conte on guitar (Tower of Power) at the Coronado in Vallejo, California in the early 80s.. That was a smokin' show.
Favorite tune - Baby, I Love You - Covered it in LA based 'Facts of Life' in the mid 70's. It's on the 'Thriller' album I think, but cannot recover it anywhere.

Yeah, I lived in the City (SF)in 1970-71 and loved Lydia and the band-heard em at the Fillmore and over in East Bay venues. She played one of the local San Diego Indian Casinos last year but I couldn't make it down there to hear/see her. Hope she is keepin' it real...

I have been a Cold Blood fan since their first LP. I saw them only one time in person - at Indianapolis around the time their LP "Thriller" was released.
I am from the Bay Area and have listened to Cold Blood since 1969, have seen them almost everywhere they have played, regardless of the size of the venue. I was floored the first time I saw Lydia Pense and heard that powerhouse of a voice. I could never understand why they did not become a massive force in music outside the Bay Area. I am proud of all the bands that came out of the Bay Area, Bozz Scaggs, Elvin Bishop, the Doobie Brothers, and let us not forget Tower of Power, another local band
Fabulous! The first Cold Blood piece I heard was "Funky on my Back," which is still an amazing tune. What a voice!

Lydia & Cold Blood played a gig at University of Victoria (British Columbia, Canada) in the early '70s. I was part of the sound crew. Not only did she knock the audience out, but Lydia -- a petite 5-foot bombshell -- knocked out, literally, the local band that came out before her by out-drinking their lead singer! The band's and her awesome performance is something I'll never forget.

I used to see this band regularly at the Keystone in Berkley. This was the place of the uncle of a friend of mine. The after parties at his penthouse was and is just a blur.

I LOVE COLD BLOOD, SHE'S STILL GOT IT GOIN ON! MY HUSBAND AND I SAW HER AT THE SONORA BLUES FESTIVAL A FEW YEARS BACK.

I saw Cold Blood in New Haven CT in the early 70s with Quick Silver, Its a Beautiful Day and Son's of Champlain. Wow it was a great show. Lydia sure can sing!
this is some of the best vitage music on the planet
I saw this group several tines in the early seventies at club in San Diego called Wallbangers. Terrific live show. The crowd would go off and then get more drinks when the rare slow song came around. I would definitely go see them again.
As "Paul DeLaney and Everyday People", we covered several of thier songs.
Lydia Pense & Cold Blood still one of the funkiest tight groups of its time..Saw them at Electric Circus In NYC and was never the same again....gre a t mix of vocals horns and hammond organs...Lyd i a You are a Good Woman...smil e
Sadly, I never got the chance to experience "Cold Blood" live, but I have been a true fan since the beginning. I hope to catch the current line up one day soon.

"I just want to make love to you" Just kills me every time I hear it. Great Horns. Ten wheel Drive is another group that gets no airplay these days..... Zephyr was another group with a strong Female singer at that time
ladybug1234

I was in love with this group in the early 70's and was able to see them at the Agora nightclub in Cleveland, Ohio where my husband played with his band Course of the Electric Messenger.
Cold blood and tower of power was what I grew up on. Music isn't like this any more with real lyrics and really out their playing with all you got. love the horns it just gets you in a good mood.
Another group they remind me of from back in the day is "Joy of Cooking". Joy isn't as funky but the vocals are similar.
Saw them at a club in Harvard Square in the early 70s and they blew that place apart. Don't understand why Lydia Pense never achieved the recognition she deserved.
Cold Blood's music emits the the most incredible sound with amazing vocals, horns and melodic rythyms. My favorite album is First Taste of Sin, but Lydia is amazing too. Listen to My Lady Woman, Valdez in the Country, Under Pressure, Ready to Live, even their newest album Transfusion has a good track: Hooked on you. I also like Visions and Down to the Bone. Cold Blood is not for everyone, it requires a fine taste of fully aqcuired appreciation for the best.
Cold Blood plays the sickest funk there is! Indeed I completely concur with claud wheeler, but I will go further and say Chicago and Janis Joplin were no match for Cold Blood. They're great and all, but something about Cold Blood's sound distinguishe s them from the best in an entirely new realm of amazing sound. Lydia can rip!
THEY NEVER RECEIVED THE ACCLAIM THEY DESERVED.
