Clan Of Xymox

Clan of Xymox have been in the unfortunate position of always being compared to other bands since their inception. Whether it's the Cure or Joy Division, Clan of Xymox have never been able to shake off the similarities to their influences. Nevertheless, the group has produced an impressive body of work that consistently absorbed new sounds while remaining faithful to the '80s goth rock menu.

Clan of Xymox were formed in Nijmegen, Netherlands, in 1983 by Ronny Moorings (vocals, guitar) and Anka Wolbert (bass, vocals). A year later, Moorings and Wolbert moved to Amsterdam, releasing the LP Subsequent Pleasures as Xymox. (The album was limited to 500 copies.) Xymox then became the opening act for Dead Can Dance in England. The band's presence on Dead Can Dance's U.K. tour caught the interest of 4AD Records, and the label eventually signed them. A year later, Xymox lengthened their name to Clan of Xymox and recorded a self-titled album in 1985, followed by Medusa the next year. In 1987, the group shortened its appellation to Xymox once again, contributing another version of "Muscoviet Mosquito," originally on Subsequent Pleasures, to the 4AD compilation Lonely Is an Eyesore. After the release of the single "Blind Hearts," Xymox left 4AD and joined Polygram/Wing.

In 1989, Xymox released Twist of Shadows, their most commercially successful LP, selling 300,000 copies. The infectious and uncharacteristically upbeat "Phoenix of My Heart" landed on the modern rock charts in 1991. However, the full-length Phoenix didn't do as well as Twist of Shadows. Wolbert departed from the band that year, replaced by bassist Mojca Zugna. In 1992, Xymox left Polygram/Wing for ZOK Records. Xymox record two albums for ZOK Records -- 1992's Metamorphosis and 1993's Headclouds -- before switching to Tess Records in 1997 for the album Hidden Faces. Moreover, Moorings called the group Clan of Xymox once again.

In 1999, they signed with the Metropolis label and released Creatures, which was followed a year later by the two-CD Live. The 2001 album Notes from the Underground was reinterpreted on the double remix CD Remixes from the Underground, which landed in 2002. Farewell from 2003 was a themed album with bittersweet goodbyes to lovers and friends the main topics. The 2004 collection The Best of Clan of Xymox found latter-day highlights next to re-recordings of the band's early material. Two years later, the album Breaking Point was announced by the single "Weak in My Knees." The 2009 effort In Love We Trust was a return to the layered sound of their 4AD years. ~ Michael Sutton, Rovi

Does anyone recall dancing barefoot?
Amazing band. Obsession is easily on my top five list of all time. It's got a hold on me...
Stranger is like the beat from blue monday the synths from human leagues obsession with some depeche mode thrown in for good measure. It's not bad, I like it but I can see how it is very derivative of its influences.

I have 2 CDs from late80s/earl y 90s that are just Xymox, they were Twist of Shadows and Phoenix, they were good albums, then band name went back to Clan of Xymox late 90s?
They will be at the obscure lounge in Maywood. Or the house lounge.
First time in hearing them, a bit like SF Film Music

awesome
nice :)
Too bad for the CLAN that they never got the recognition thet deserved here in the states. But then again I'm not surprise as Americans we have awful taste in music, unless you're one of the masses of trendy commercial mindless product of this generation.
norbertzz
saw them in 1988 live in Warsaw , over 20 years later still one of my favorites
My mp3 player is FULL of Clan of Xymox.
The 1985 Clan of Xymox album is in my all-time top ten. There isn't a bad song on it. I agree with mygbrice, oh the memories indeed. When this album came out I was a disillusione d 19 year old. They still play in some of the goth festivals around the world. If your interested you can check out the mag 'Gothic Beauty' for these shows.
I've been listening to The Clan of Xymox since the mid 80's. Thanks to the Great Station 88.5 WMNF of Tampa/St. Pete. You can catch these guy's on the Pod Cast Dark Horizons now, every Thursday evening. Funny, the first two CD's I bought back then were Clan of Xymox and Peter Murphy and I still have them both. Oh, the memories ;)
Bad haircuts CAN lead to good music! :)
I LOVE CLAN OF XYMOX i dont care what any of you think

they are very under-rated
Looks like the Bio's been hacked. ): Sounds like a good band, though.
Thanks for the suggestions on similar bands, I have always wondered why Xymox was so under appreciated. I will check them out.
I feel like turning off the lights at my office and start dancing. But I am too chicken. My boss might open the door.

I couldn't find the track; "Obsession" I heard it on XM radio and It was awesome. But what Album is it from? Anyone know?
What album is Pheonix of My Heart on? Pandora doesn't have their whole discography! !
love, love , love xymox!!!! My musical heart screams! Nothing like them!!!!
I dont understand why people compare the clan of Xymox to bands like joy division...t h e y are a dark wave and sound nothing like the bands that tired inept journalist claim.
I don't think Xymox sounds like any other artists either...the y are one of the few other bands I love as much as Delerium...
anyone have the old "wax trax!" record of them w/click click? why can't one find Click Click?
Not really like the listed Similar Artists at all! Clan Of Xymox is simply the best. There has never been anyone else quite like Morrings et. al. and I suppose there never will be. Be sure to check out anything else on 4AD, Pandemonium, or even I Rain. I can't understand the similarity to the listed bands given the selection that could have been provided. The only adjective that all share would be "dark". For a good off-label similarity try Perfume Tree.
Lucky me, I have heaps of their stuff on my MP3 player so whenever I travel that's what I listen to (and Nightwish, Theatre of Tragedy, Leaves' Eyes, and Within Temptation). Time to get a stick for more stuff tho . . .
I love them Dearly and always have found them as part of My motivation in My Dj Career.
loved them ever since 4ad started , pandora is great
They just came to Orlando, Fl, unfortunatel y I couldn't go. Xymox = awesome old-school.
I first heard Xymox when I was travelling through the Netherlands. A girl I met had it in her cassette player. I really liked so she recorded it for me. Years later the band actually toured in the US and I was able to see them in New Orleans an Tipatinas. Thanks Pandora for the kick azz music and stations!
