Circus Maximus

Norway's Circus Maximus integrate the new millennium's first wave of progressive heavy metal. Formed in 2000, Circus Maximus consist of experienced musicians Michael Eriksen (vocals, guitar), Mats Haugen (guitar), Espen Storø (keyboards), Glen Cato Møllen (bass), and Truls Haugen (drums), and the group's 2005 debut album, The 1st Chapter, drew comparisons to Dream Theater and Symphony X for its melodic and song-oriented material. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia, Rovi

Good band...good music...all alone...with nobody else to listen to this with me

Also, it is not as if Dream Theater didn't borrow heavily from bands like, Boston, Queen, Journey, and Asia. DT is still my favorite band, because while I do like trailblazing bands, ultimately it comes down to who sounds the best.

I have to wonder if Dream Theater’s 2011 album cover for A Dramatic Turn of Events borrowed from Circus Maximus’ unicycle ride that they used on the 2005 album The 1st Chapter. It is not as if Circus Maximus did not heavily borrow from Dream Theater’s sound however.

Hopefully they won't be underrated for the rest of their career.

I got into these guys by accident and haven't looked back. My favorite band now.
Report as inappropriate
Monster rock sounds like a Styx/Triumph mix
Report as inappropriate
um,,,no...th e y don't. they are very good and one of my favorite bands, but the buck started and stops with dream theater.
Report as inappropriate
These guys leave Dream Theater in the dust.

@Hanshi God of Metal If they did start as a Dream Theater cover band, i'd really like to hear some of their covers. They probably get pretty damn close to sounding like the real thing.
Report as inappropriate
Just discovered this band and love them! One of the funny things to me is that the album that sounds the most like Dream Theater is the one that has an album cover with a unicyclist on it, and it was released 7 years before Dream Theater did it.
Report as inappropriate
prefer isolate of the three albums. the new album is good, but a bit too loose for me.
Report as inappropriate
All music created is built upon earlier influences, therefore DT is in the mix
Report as inappropriate
actually, circus maximus began as a dream theater cover band.

no comarison at all between dt and cm...both bands have their own style...for some they will sound alike but what you expect they both play in the same category...a m i right or am i right?
Report as inappropriate
first, nothing wrong with sounding with DT. second, if you listen to their inventory, they have a sound all their own.

WOW!! Prog and Symphonic-li k e !! Masterful !! Neoclassical !!
Report as inappropriate
Uh.. Sane No More sounds WAY too much like Dream Theater. I know these guys are different bands, but some parts feel like they are lifted directly from DT's catalog. It's entirely possible they are huge followers, but wow, the synth was nearly spot on..
Report as inappropriate
Wow, I totally thought I was listening to Liquid Tension Experiment or Dream Theater at first
Report as inappropriate
Very good music. if you like very complex stuff like this check out Hourglass. prog band from midwest.
Report as inappropriate
they are nearly done recording the new album!

Really enjoyed the piano of Espen in the first disc. Isolate is pretty solid, but right now digging the 1st a little more. Really like the acoustic sound as well that does separate them from DT a bit.

1st Chapter (song) is their best track by far.

like prog? check out alphadecaymu s i c . c o m

CM are in a league of their own as well as DT
CAN'T COMPARE THE TWO!.

whats with the knocking of the KINGS, Dream Theater? In case you were sleeping through Systematic Chaos and Octavarium (i was), they left no doubt whatsoever that they are THE zenith prog metal band with Black Clouds and Silver Linings...th a t being said, Circus Maximus and the Isolate album in particular is nothing short of stunning...j u s t a hair under the KINGS.

truly outstanding band--every bit as good as the best in the genre (DT, Ryche and Sym X). only knock is lyrics are cheesy at times.

they are in a league of their own, in a word,(outsta n d i n g )

I love this band, but I'm a sucker for good prog...

Dream Theater influences with a side of LTE (Liquid Tension Experiment)
Report as inappropriate
Oh, and yes, they are better than Symphony X. I enjoy both bands, but "Isolate" blows anything SX ever did away. I love the fact that the wankery is limited and great melody and vocals rule the album.
Report as inappropriate
I agree. "Isolate" was a killer album, and I can only hope the band can match it with the next one.
Report as inappropriate
I think "Isolate" may be one of the only completely flawless recordings ever released. These guys are just too awesome.

Great Prog Metal band. IMO they over do everything, especially vocals. The guitarist Mats Haugen also plays on James LaBrie's (Dream Theater's vocalist)
solo album. Look that $#!t up.

CIRCUS MAXIMUS KICKS A**!!!

Definately better than D.T. Until I hear more, can't put 'em better than Symphony X though.
Report as inappropriate
I enjoy the hell out of this band.

One of the newer badass bands

Such a reminder of Dream Theater deserves its own well earned place in the prog scene...its like Dream with a Queensryche- i s h voice...I'm pretty sure Petrucci, Portnoy, Ruddess and Myung are huge fans themselves.. . w a t c h out DT !...competit i o n is tough these days !
Report as inappropriate
Awesome Band! One of my Favs. I also used to think that Circus Maximus was a little on the boring side but I kept listening to them and now am convinced that they are the best prog band around. Dream Theater wishes they were still this good! I'm hooked on both records.
Report as inappropriate
meh. The thing about Circus Maximus (IMO) is that they have incredibly awesome song intros (especially on Isolate), but when the song proper starts, it sounds like any other generic metal band! It's BORING! It's REDUNDANT! They need to get more... proggy.
Report as inappropriate
wrong circus maximus!! original 1960's band featuring jerry Jeff Walker. Best known song is "The Wind".
