Chuck Loeb

A skillful guitarist capable of playing any style of music, Chuck Loeb's own solo projects have generally been commercially successful crossover jazz, which has been classified through the years as "contemporary" or "smooth" jazz. He started playing guitar when he was 11; discovered jazz when he was 16; took lessons from Jim Hall, Pat Metheny, and Joe Puma; and attended the Berklee College of Music. Loeb freelanced in New York (with Hubert Laws, Chico Hamilton, and Joe Farrell, among others) and then in 1979 joined Stan Getz's group for two years. Back in New York, Loeb worked on jingles and soundtracks both as a player and a composer. He spent 1985-1987 with Steps Ahead and in more recent times has produced recordings by Donald Harrison, Nelson Rangell, Larry Coryell, George Garzone, and Warren Bernhardt, among others. As a performer, Loeb was part of Petite Blonde (a group featuring saxophonist Bill Evans), Metro, and the Fantasy Band, and played with Gary Burton, Dave Samuels, and many others; in addition, his compositions have been recorded by quite a few pop/jazz artists.

Loeb made his first solo record in 1988, recorded extensively for DMP, and switched to Shanachie in 1996. Over the next seven years he released six albums for the label, beginning in 1998 with The Moon, the Stars and the Setting Sun, followed by Listen in 1999. Loeb remained active in the 21st century, releasing In a Heartbeat in early 2001, All There Is in 2002, and eBop one year later. The guitarist wrapped up his tenure with Shanachie in 2005 with When I'm with You, and signed with Heads Up International, a division of Telarc. His first outing for the label was Presence, released in 2007. In 2010, Loeb replaced Larry Carlton as the guitarist for Fourplay, but continued as a producer, composer, arranger, and guitarist on his own, starting his own label, Heads Up, and with the release of Plain 'n' Simple in 2011, he revisited the world of 1960s jazz bebop organ trios. It's Love, an album with saxophonist Eric Marienthal, appeared in 2012. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi

Cross between smooth and funky.
One of the coolest acoustic /electric guitarists of our time with that distinct inimitable Chuck Loeb sounds from the fantasy band to Fourplay or doing his thing on his own personal projects. Mr Loeb brings it every time he is on stage.

Chuck's music is as smooth as a ripe avocado, a natural staple on my menu, no doubt. Love you, Chuck...Live from St. Pete!!!!
Such a creative guitarist - Got to see him (& talked to him after the show) up close at the Catalina Bar & Grill in Hollywood. His talented daughter, Lizzy, came up and sang a couple of songs.
A guitar master and a jazz megastar
Peaceful and soothing. :-)

It looks like the guitar does all the talking. Sounds great from the great one and only Loeb.
Chuck Loeb is not your run-of-the-m i l l Jazz Guitarist. He definitely has a style all his own, and it's fun to play (try to play) along with him. I do love some of his riffs; he tries to develop a less predictable melody-line whenever he can. Really refreshing.
Saw him in Hartford with Jeff Kashiwa a few years ago; one of the best concerts ever. Saw him again in 2011 at Scullers in Boston with Fourplay. Great player (one of the best) and nice guy!

So glad he's with Fourplay now!!! What an awesome musician and a really nice man!

I saw Chuck at Philadelphia ' s Zanzibar Blue jazz club in 2006 before it closed. He is a great stylist and really puts his heart and soul into his music. Hats off to Chuck and his family. Thanks for your excellent love & art.
another great guitarist but to his own way.Another reason to keep jazz alive ON THE AIR and the remaining jazz stations up an running out there.Don't let them shut down any more jazz stations(the y ' r e shutting down the wrong kinds of music out there).Jazz has no demeaningnes s , n o t vulger nor rude or offensive BUT quite opposite.
One of the best and so underrated as a player. Love this jam the most from Chuck. Keep up the great work and we need to support artists like this when ever we can. Peace.
A super talent not receiving as much recognition as he desires.
Smooth and crisp. Saw him in concert worth every penny!
I'm also a guitarist/Ba s s i s t he is awesome
I hope to play as smoothly as he does. It easy to tell that his guitar is a part of him.
Just heard Chuck with Fourplay Friday night here in Austin... WOW! Smoking guitarist! And Fourplay has never sounded better!

With a seemingly endless list of saxophone soloists in smooth jazz, whose recordings featue only saxophone from go to whoa, Chuck Loeb's music is refreshingly guitar-based , with just 'sprinklings ' of the ubiquitous sax!

this is so great.

He (Chuck Loab)also is in a group called Metro with Mitchal Forman, Anthony Jackson, Wolfgang Haffner. Jazz Fusion.
Christian: I agree to a point. It has a basis in smooth jazz , but it is a bit more sophisticate d through the guitar work.

all in all, not really my cup of tea, though I will not deny that he is quite a talented jazz guitarist.
angelopj1958
