born in Dublin, Ireland, composed during the Romantic period
Charles Villiers Stanford (1852-1924) was a British composer of the late Romantic period, noted equally for his distinctive style and his influence on other composers. Stanford's music is comparable to Elgar and Parry in its sweep and grandiosity, and his three piano concertos, seven symphonies, an opera, and several oratorios, cantatas, and anthems secured his place in 19th century English culture. Stanford's roster of students included Vaughan Williams, Holst, Bridge, Ireland, Coleridge-Taylor, and Bliss, among others, and their successes redounded to their teacher's honor. He was appointed to the Royal College of Music in 1882 and knighted in 1902. ~ Blair Sanderson, Rovi
