Carbon Leaf

Carbon Leaf's brand of rootsy, Celtic-influenced rock originated in the same Richmond, VA, scene that nurtured Dave Matthews Band, Agents of Good Roots, and Pat McGee Band. Guitarist Terry Clark, vocalist Barry Privett, bassist Jordan Medas, guitarist Carter Gravatt, and drummer Scott Milstead built up a considerable following and were soon releasing albums through their own label. Meander appeared in 1996, with Shadows in the Banquet Hall and Ether-Electrified Porch Music following in quick succession. In 2001, Carbon Leaf debuted a more mature sound with the album Echo Echo and won a Coca-Cola-sponsored unsigned band contest that landed them a performance on the American Music Awards. By this point, Carbon Leaf was also regularly opening shows for adult alternative-friendly acts like DMB, John Mayer, Guster, and David Gray, and the band documented their frequent and vibrant live shows with the 2002 double live set 5 Alive! Indian Summer appeared in 2004. Issued through Vanguard, it was Carbon Leaf's first recording for any label other than their own, and the strongest example yet of their polite, astute, and engaging sound. It was followed in 2006 by Love Loss Hope Repeat. ~ Johnny Loftus, Rovi

Man, that's awesome!!! He's one of my favorite bass players, like I'd put him on a level with geddy lee and victor wooten

We got Jordan Medas right here at our school as a music teacher!

I didn't realize how long they've been around, or how big they were out of the Maryland, DC, Virginia area. I saw them a few months ago playing a Maryland Irish festival and they were amazing.

Just saw them in concert - it was the first time I'd heard any of their songs, & now I'm hooked. I've got their new album, Constellatio n Prize - it's amazing!!

Carbon Leaf has the very rare attribute of true originality. Other than some of the Celtic-orien t e d songs they cover, there's really no one out there that sounds like them (and I'm sure they like it that way). I've been following them since the 90s when they played shows in front of about 15 people and I've loved watching the growth and evolution of their music and their ever-increas i n g popularity. I'm still waiting for a breakout hit, but maybe I should be careful what I wish for!

I discovered these guys when they opened for OAR in Greensboro last year. Their stage presence was immediately impressive and i really found their sound familiar. I look forward to seeing them live some time soon.

He certainly DOES carry a tune well, though!

I agree that Barry does not have a great singing voice, but it's a signature voice nonetheless. It's their sound and individual talents that make this band great.

@ bobobnit f**k off u ain't no music critic as u only stuck to one genre go back to shoving a rubber chicken up your a**

bobonnit - everyone is entitled to their opinion (especially since they are like @$$holes...) but read through the rest of the comments and you will find you are in a distinct minority when it comes to Carbon Leaf. Barry Privett has one of the best voices in folk/rock and imho, the musicianship of this band cannot be beat. Looking forward to the new album (Ghost Dragon Attacks Castle) on 2/19/13

They suck. Singer couldn't carry a tune in a bucket, Depressing. Thumbs down

Fantastic band. Wonderful songwriting. Excellent musicianship . Great live shows. Nice guys, too.

Wow I didn't know these guys were still around. Love them & the raspy tone & lyrics. Brings me back to Mary Mac...

I think they would do well if they went back to their old style, as that sound is now the trend in a lot of the new rock music.

Carbon Leaf is the best ever! You, Pandora, need to update your bio. Their current drummer is Jason Neal and Jon Markel replaced Jordan Mades. This happened many years ago.

Not to hate, but Carbon Leaf was a whole lot better when they were a college-town band in central Virginia...

I miss old Carbon Leaf. Pre Indian Summer, they were possibly one of the best groups to stand in front of microphones. Indian summer was transitional but everything after they signed is just been mediocre. I can't help but feel that they were touched by the corporate pop bug...I blame the producers. These guys are fully capable of making awesome music, the corporate types need to leave it alone and let them get back to their roots.

I have seen Carbon leaf at least four times. They have been a staple for years up here in the Seattle area.

Love this band especially Indian Summer. Thanks to my son who introduced me to their music. They're his favorite band.

Beautiful vocals. Love Loss Hope Repeat is a fine collection of music well performed and thoughtful.

One of my favs. They tour non-stop and are always open to pics after the show. NYE shows are the best.

Love these guys -- they've gotten me through some rough times. Terrific music, very personal guys who don't mind talking to you after the show.
Wish I could hear them more on the radio but I love the small-time feel of their shows.

I'm 57 yrs-old and yet I'm smitten with these guys. A very unique musical style.. .. Good songs, in a variety of styles, nothing too hard rock. Thanks to my daughter for referring me to them. LOVE ,LOSS, HOPE, REPEAT is my favorite album.

Destination Song - best song ever. Love Carbon Leaf and their concerts are amazing.

They make me think of Rusted Root

I've got it. They remind me of Iron and Wine, not the sound but the songs. I'm not really hearing the Celtic influence. Great lyrics on this and other songs, tho.

Bio definitely could stand an update. The newer members, Jon Markel on Bass and Jason Neal on percussion are brilliant. And they are still very active - recording new material on their own label and touring non-stop. Catch them live if you can , if you can't check out their DVD released May 2011 !!
