Cactus

The plan was for the Vanilla Fudge rhythm section of bassist Tim Bogert and drummer Carmine Appice to join with guitar god Jeff Beck and his singer Rod Stewart in a supergroup of sorts. The plan was derailed when Beck had a motorcycle accident that incapacitated him for 18 months. Stewart then joined pal Ron Wood in the revamped Faces (and pursued a somewhat lucrative solo career), leaving Bogert and Appice to find alternates for their dream band. They recruited guitarist Jim McCarty from Mitch Ryder's disassembling Detroit Wheels, and singer Rusty Day from Ted Nugent's Amboy Dukes. One can only wonder what might have been.

What was, was Cactus, a generic boogie band that never got beyond opening-act status and never sold many records. The band's first album, Cactus, was OK, with a speed-demon version of Mose Allison's "Parchman Farm," but their music never amounted to anything more than the formulaic on subsequent releases. The band had a short life. After Cactus' dissolution in 1972, Bogert and Appice finally joined with Beck to form Beck, Bogert & Appice. However, that group's one release showed very little magic, and BB&A lasted little more than a year. ~ Jim Newsom, Rovi

Whoever wrote this bio obviously doesn't know jack about good music.

What ever happened to Rusty Day, He had a great voice and harp that fit perfectly in Cactus, He was replaced in 72 by some English guy that was no where near as good
It being obvious that I have s**t stains in my boxer shorts older than the reviewer. That being said, Just raw, raunchy blues....C'm o n man, really? I feel less for painted faces and electronic lights and synthetic bullshit than these dudes getting up there and putting on a better show than most they opened for. No fuzzboxes, no distortions, just musical talent. If you didnt get off on cactus, it was because you were dead.
cardoman563
Cactus was one of the best rock n roll bands back in the day, jim mcarthy tore it up on guitar, and old timmy bogart was bad-a**..... . a n d u cant forget old carmine banging away on skins......
The first Cactus Album was OK??? He throws 'em a bone. The man is a total idiot.

I saw what was one of the greatest shows ever at the Fillmore East. Chick bad Dada followed by our boys Cactus. Humble Pie headlined. Amazing show. Hard to say Cactus stole the show as HP killed it. But Cactus was very underrated. Too bad Rusty Day kicked it
The second one is Cactus V from 2006.
The first Cactus album is a classic. And as others have said, it needs to be played loud. They were a raw, rocking, no nonsense band.

They Rocked reviewer must have heard 2 minutes of New Cactus Band and that's it. Shame he tried to scare people off.
Saw them a allot in KC while they were opening acts, these boys could jam with some of the best of them in their hayday!! That's for sure!!!
jmore1231
Tim bogart is the best boogie bassest from the old school 60'sand70s.. . m y imsaration to play bass guitar...cac t u s ROCK HEAVY....!
These guys are way over looked by all fm stations. Cactus is bad a** and still are one the best blues boogie bands ever.

Their music never amounted to anything more than the formulaic... This is a phrase that music critics use (and I see it all the time) when they a) have never heard more than 30 seconds of a band's music, and b) have a deadline and c) use total sales of a recording as their sole aesthetic criteria. Musically, it's completely absurd to throw away a band of incredible players like Cactus, while worshiping the Sabbaths and Zeppelins, solely because of commercial success.
This review was written by someone who obviously has never sat down and listened to the album One Way or Another on a nice stereo with a good buzz on... I saw Cactus back in '70-'71backi n g up Black Sabbath, and believe me, they did more than hold their own! One of my favorite early 70's bands!

Wow. Apparently any moron can review music these days. Cactus rules!
The first concert I ever went to had these guys and steve miller 1970 tampa fl.

This dude is an idiot. I saw them back in the day and they blew the doors off. Jim McCarty is bad a**, and still has his chops.
one of the best early blues bands / first album isgreat
the reviewer must of been on a bad acid trip saying cactus was only soso they rocked
Are you kidding me, Cactus was great. Have some respect for the late Mr Day.
Cactus played some shows a few years back. I saw them at BB Kings in New York. Werner Fritszching was guitaris on some of those gigs. Werner was with Cactus after McCarty left to chase his demons. McCarty got most of the credit for Cactus but toured and recorded with them on 'ot & Nasty. Werner's understated career publically does not reflect the respect that professional s and True Guitar fans have for his amazing work over the years. If you can find it look for the Band: Blue House at RandRw
tarheel0254
Their first album much more than OK. Saw these guys in the summer of 1970.Deep Purple opened up. They couldn't have been all that bad. But, oh yea, donnyboy has never heard of DP so they must suck too.
under appreciated early 70's bad asses
Sorry Don..saw these guys back in the day...they rocked the baltimore CC...they came out loud and proud and stole the show for me...agree BBC never made it ..tried to get into it...but nada
donnyboy8519
The gentleman who wrote this review obviously knows what he is talking about. Cactus sucks so bad that even Jeff Beck wanted them as his rhythm section & everybody knows Jeff Beck stinks, oh wait, that's right Jeff Beck is one of the most respected guitar players in 21st Centry. That's weird. So if Jeff Beck doesn't suck, then.....
Still amazing!
They were a great band. Saw them live in Phoenix back in the day, and they kicked butt! Better than the band they opened for; can't even remember who it was because Cactus stole the show! Great band.
Yeah; what a bonehead review. I also have a 1973 Atlantic album with Pinera on lead and vocal; Son of Cactus! A little more mainstream leanings but a great album. They are truly a great group!

The guy who wrote the review is obviously listened to one track and read some dismissive review from a 1972 Rolling Stone article. Jim McCarty is pretty damn b**chin' and these guys rocked hard in a stylisticall y individual and identifiable way. They certainly weren't generic and it is as tired and boring to use "boogie rock" in a dismissive way as it is to find the blues "boring" because it is repetitive. Dude needs to develop his ear before he writes anymore reviews.
i first heard evil on sirius.am hooked.cant wait to add to vynil collection
The review did suck. I´ve got 3 albums by this power trio and, boogie not withstanding (it was redundant), and all 3 rock. Hell, folks went to go see Carmine play the drums like a one man orchestra. Check out the tune rock n´roll children or Evil if you need further proof. Hard to do much better.
georgec6
I bought a Cactus record. It was red colored and was awesome. I saw them in concert once and they were great. Much better than that sucky review.
They played at the 1970 concert Strawberry Fields in Ontario. They really rocked! What a great concert it was.
milosdad
I got to see the new version of this band with Mike Pinera as the lead guitarist. Always a great show. They may have been just "an opening act" but sometimes that's the difference between a good lineup and a great lineup. I saw these guys with the likes of Edgar Winter, Montrose, Foghat and R.E.O Speedwagon (when they still had soul). They always rocked the house. I suspect that MR. Newsome has never really invested any time into listening to these guys.
i like'em
Cactus the best name ever for a Rock Band /just a especial sound that remember me such a good old days/thanks for the memories.
Ignore Jim Newsom's boneheaded review for Cactus. Geez, what a putz. The first Cactus album was good but the subsequent Restrictions and One Way or Another albums were amazing, solid and some of my all time favorites. Jim also neglected to mention that Cactus got back together (w/o Rusty Day) after 2000 and released a decent, though not on par with the aforemention e d two albums, called 'V' that has some cuts worth checking out.
very nice...
Didn't Mike Pinnera(sp) play lead guitar for Cactus at one time? I remember seeing a battle of the guitars at teh Thunderbird 8 drive-in theater back in the 70's where Mike Pinnera played guitar with Cactus until Ted Nugent came out on stage and joined him. The rest of the band left the stage and it was just Mike and Ted, Mike was amazing and Ted was very boring. He spent about 10 minutes trying to play a chord that was supposed to break a big crystal ball up on the stage. After what seemed
