Bud & Travis

The folk duo of Bud Dashiell and Travis Edmonson performed hundreds of shows and recorded ten albums between 1958 and 1965, all without ever securing a hit single. Bud & Travis played a key role in the folk revival. Their superb guitar playing, effortless harmonizing, and boundless catalog of pop, folk, and Latin material influenced and informed many of their contemporaries. After serving as a Battery Commander in the Korean War, the Paris-born Dashiell met Edmonson through army buddy Colin Edmonson. Travis had spent the early '50s as a member of the successful Gateway Singers, but it was his tumultuous years with Dashiell that would define both men's careers. Like many duos, Bud & Travis took to the stage as a single organism, but once the lights went down the amicable relationship went with them, often exploding into physical violence. The two split in 1965, just after the release of their last recording, the all-Spanish The Bud & Travis Latin Album. Dashiell went on to record with the Kinsmen in the 1960s, eventually leaving that group to pursue a career as a soloist in the 1970s. He eventually moved to Los Angeles to teach guitar and music, and did so right up until death from a brain tumor in 1989. Edmonson recorded three solo albums in the '60s then, like his estranged partner, went on spend the '70s on the road as a troubadour, releasing a pair of well-received cowboy-folk records. ~ James Christopher Monger, Rovi

I went to a concert, at the Golden Bear, in HB in the late 60s. What a couple of great guitar players, once they were tuned and had a string welded to stay in tune. Great musicians and funny too.

Love Bud and Travis. Neither one of these guys were born in Mexico or are from Spanish descent. They recorded several Mexican songs & albums, and were beautifully done. Some of my favorites are Malagueña Salerosa and Noche de Ronda. Truly goes to show that music knows no color or boundaries.. . I n singing classic songs, they're up there with Eydie Gorme...

John Denver, the creator of country-pop, as well as David Crosby of CSNY, the creator of folk-rock, both "bunked" with Travis in Tucson. His performances of traditional Mexican songs also set the stage for the southwestern sounds of Tucsonan Linda Ronstadt and her back-up band, the Eagles, the creators of country-rock .
