Brand X were a British jazz-rock fusion outfit formed by Genesis drummer Phil Collins and Atomic Rooster guitarist John Goodsall as a side project from their regular groups. Their initial lineup also included keyboardist Robin Lumley and bassist Percy Jones (the Liverpool Scene, the Scaffold). Brand X's debut album, Unorthodox Behaviour, was released in 1976; a live album, Livestock, and the studio effort Moroccan Roll followed in 1977. Collins left the group to concentrate on Genesis, and for 1978's Masques, he was replaced by Al Di Meola drummer Chuck Burgi, as well as additional keyboardist Peter Robinson, who had played with Stanley Clarke. Three further albums -- 1979's Product, 1980's Do They Hurt?, and 1982's Is There Anything About? -- followed before the group disbanded. In the mid-'90s, Lumley, Goodsall, and Jones reunited, issuing several live collections in the years to follow. ~ Steve Huey, Rovi
Nuclear Burn - Man that is awesome I thought Moroccan Roll was the top of their game. Collins sounds like Joel Rosenblatt on this one, or should I say Rosenblatt sounds like him?
Brand X is an absolutely superb example of the creative potential of fusion. Moroccan Roll stands out as my particular favorite album. Simply exquisite!

Certainly caught my attention!!

Unbelievable! That is if what I just read in the bio is true. I saw Phil Collins with Genesis in the early 70s on the Selling England by the Pound tour and saw Al Di Meola open for Renaissance in the mid 70s. I've heard Brand X before but never knew their background. Very impressive.
The "Marscape" album was a Robin Lumley (keyboards)/ J a c k Lancaster (ex-Blodwyn Pig) project that actually had all the original members of Brand X, recorded just after Unorthodox Behavior. An excellent concept piece, agreed that it is highly recommended for any Brand X fan.
Brand X is the best fusion ever!!! I saw these guys a few times in the day and they were simple awesome. Percy Jones put out a few albums with his group called "Tunnels" check it out... Some of these guys put out two concept albums back in 70's called Marscape and other was called Peter and the Wolf.. Highly recommend both. Percy's unique sound still stands
some of the best jazz fusion ever. they need to get back together and produce somemore of this incredible music and hit the road...

I had read previously that Phil Collins had planned to leave Genesis and join Brand X full time but that changed when Peter Gabriel left the band. Collins did not play on the Masques album as noted but he is featured on the last three albums before the band broke up. With the exception of the live albums and compilations released after the group broke up, I have all their material which includes "livestock."

"Phil Collins was so good with early Genesis and BrandX....what the hell happened?" Sadly, Collins discovered that he could make millions producing love songs and movie soundtracks with a fraction of the mental and musical effort. As one of the first comments below stated, recordings like this were in a period before Collins "sold his soul to the Commercial Music Devil."
This is of the strangest fusion bands that you will ever hear and we already know what an incredible drummer phil collins is - and john goodsall is a verygood guitarist - I remember hearing morocan roll around the time it came out- i was captivated - brand x excellent stuff.
I bought this album at a garage sale for 25 cents in the late 70's - a quarter well spent.

One of the best fusion bands ever! I have all their albums and love everyone one of them, in their own theme! Great stuff! Absolutely timeless....still sounds fantastic!
yeah tony williams lifetime believe it. seen brand x at morris stage in jersey without phil. they rocked . like bruford and uk. all very strong. scofield with dennis chambers. jeff beck with simon phillips.zappa with ansley dunbar.dig fusion for many years. cobham with mahavishnu. mike clark on headhunters. michael portnoy the master.
Everything from album design to titles to compositions to performance was X-tra well done. Each band member was a gifted musician -deep weaving cool nuance into flaming riffs. Back in '78 I could'nt believe someone booked them at a disco (Beginings, in Schaumberg, IL). I went and saw all the original members, X-cept w/ Kenwood Dennard on drums, live for $5! Most of the disco crowd went from WTF! to OMG!!
One of the best fusion beands ever!!!! Nothing but talent here folks!

An amazing band of musicians. So tight. I had the pleasure of seeing the band in a small hall concert at Univ of Cincinnati in the late 70's. It was fourth of July and there were only about 30 people at the show so we were literally front row in a private session and they jammed for hours. To this day, the most gifteed group of musicians I've seen. To bad their work is so limited.
A friend in high school turned me onto the band's debut lp -- Unorthodox Behavior; that was back in the 70s. I've been a fan ever since. Almost got to see them in concert in Champaign, IL at a place called Panama Red's (or something like that) back in '77 or '78. My friend and I made the 3 hour drive and arrived to find out the date we'd been given was wrong and they had been in town the night before. Good times!

...anyone who likes Return to Forever will love this, as it will be very familiar...I liked it.
One of my favorite bands, to be sure... the good ones always go away, don't they? And while Collins was (and presumably is still) a good drummer, he doesn't hold a candle to Mike Clark. I'll take Clark and Percy Jones together any day of the week. "Do They Hurt" is one of the best releases this - or any - band has ever done.

Brand X is one of my favorites. I actually heard the last 15 minutes or so of DMZ which is off their LP "Do They Hurt" on Dutch radio. There was a fmr co-worker that recorded some of their material for me, and later on I played that particular snippet I heard on the radio for him. He swore up and down it wasn't Brand X when I knew it was. The tracks he recorded for me were from the LP the song was from. Some people don't really "Hear" the music. I found an interview done with Goodsall and Collin

Yes, bands like Kiss, and hundreds more couldn't play themselves out of a plastic bag and make millions.

Well boys. Not one of the finer, but one of the best! Yes, as all great muscians we need to eat too. That is why we drag down great music!!
