Bohuslav Martinu (1890-1959) was a 20th century Czech composer, a younger contemporary of Leos Janácek; like the older master, he was a pioneer in a highly individualistic idiom. Martinu composed music in all the classical genres, but took a long time to develop a distinctive voice. After absorbing jazz in the 1920s and neo-classicism and other modernist trends in the 1930s, Martinu incorporated many ingredients in his mature works, which depended strongly on rhythm. He spent the years after 1938 as an exile, traveling to the United States where he became a citizen. He died in Switzerland. ~ Blair Sanderson, Rovi
