The concept is bizarre -- four a cappella vocalists who call themselves "Bob" and cover rock & roll numbers -- yet it somehow works for people, even people in high places; in addition to developing a loyal following, the Bobs received a Grammy nomination for their arrangement of the Beatles' "Helter Skelter." The band was founded in 1981, when Gunnar Bob Madsen and Matthew Bob Stull lost their jobs with a singing telegram company (one can only wonder why). Together with Richard Bob Greene, they began to perform a cappella in the San Francisco Bay Area, adding Janie Bob Scott to their lineup in 1982. The following year saw the release of their eponymous debut album with the liner notes containing the classic "Warning: All the sounds on this recording were produced by the mouth or other parts of the body." Covers included the abovementioned Beatles cut as well as Talking Heads' "Psycho Killer" and a number of probingly intelligent and blissfully witty original numbers. Released in 1987, My, I'm Large continued in the same vein, mixing covers and madcap originals, while Songs for Tomorrow Morning, released the following year, featured a five-song sequence about laundry written for their artistic partners, the dance troupe ISO. In 1989, Joe Bob Finetti replaced founder Gunnar Bob Madsen for the recording of Sing the Songs of.... This lineup remained intact for several more years, when, in 1997, Janie Bob Scott was replaced by Lori Bob Rivera, who was then replaced by Amy Bob Engelhardt in 1998, leading to the release of Coaster. The 2000s brought two additional Bobs releases, Rhapsody in Bob in 2005 and Get Your Monkey Off My Dog in 2007. The most recent incarnation of the Bobs includes founders Matthew Bob Stull and Richard Bob Greene along with Amy Bob Engelhardt and Dan Bob Schumacher, the latter of whom replaced Joe Bob Finetti in the quartet. ~ Leon Jackson, Rovi
In an interview on TV with the BOBs more than 20 years ago, one of the group said that the name BOB comes from Best Of Breed as in a dog show. At the time, they were the best of the acapella breeds.

Did it ever occur to those who wrote that the girl is ugly.....the girl can read. Not very nice
I also wish Pandora had more of the Bobs. They have many albums, but most of them don't appear here.

David, I'm glad you have broadened your musical horizons. That is not a flattering picture of Janie Bob. She's quite attractive in person. And ALL the Bobs are called Bob, i.e. Matthew Bob, Richard Bob, etc. But ackerbex3 is right; it's not about how they look, it's about how they sound and how talented they are.

You are so right, lance603! Well said!
A live Bobs show is the most fun and laughter I've ever had at a music concert. Hope they carry on in perpetuity.

The whole point, people, is how the group SOUNDS, not how their female group member looks. The Bobs have cornered the market on sly acapella wittiness, and their harmonies are spot on.
"Four a cappella vocalists who call themselves "bob" and cover rock & roll numbers" is the most dismissive and insufficient description I've ever heard for the Bobs.
Try this instead: "Unbelievably innovative and talented, these four vocalists nicknamed 'Bob' redefined a capella for the music world, and more than 20 years later continue to set the standard for vocal music with their inspired arrangements, clever-insane lyrics, and laugh-out-loud live performances."

I agree totally with David. I also checked out Tonic Sol Fa, and they were pretty good too.
Dude these guys are great. Pandora really helped me discover a liking for a cappella groups. a cappella is a real test of musical skill. But that girl is ugly. lol. her name is probably BOB too. lol

SLOW DOWN KRISHNA! your red transam goes way to fast!
The Bobs will richly reward further exploration by Pandora listeners. Of particular interest along with SFTM, their albums "Shut Up and Sing" (their wittiest work) and "Coaster". They do a strong live show too -- check bobs.com for their concert calendar (mostly out of the Berkeley area).
