The Blue Nile

The Scottish folk-ambient band the Blue Nile has enjoyed a mystique contrived by its inaccessibility and the infrequency of its recordings, but it has also made a series of critically acclaimed discs. The group was formed by three Glasgow natives who had graduated from university there: singer/songwriter/guitarist Paul Buchanan, bassist Robert Bell, and keyboardist Paul Joseph Moore. (Engineer Callum Malcolm and drummer Nigel Thomas have worked with the trio consistently, to the point of being considered secondary bandmembers.) (The Blue Nile is the title of Alan Moorehead's 1962 sequel to The White Nile, the two books making up a history of the Nile River.) They recorded their own single, "I Love This Life," which was distributed by Robert Stigwood's RSO Records just before the company closed its doors. They were then signed by Linn Products, which released their debut album, A Walk Across the Rooftops, in 1984. (A&M handled it in the U.S.) Since the company was small and the band did not tour, the album took some time to find its audience, though it briefly reached the U.K. charts and led to high expectations for a second album. This came in 1989 with Hats, which reached the British Top 20, throwing off three chart singles, "The Downtown Lights," "Headlights on the Parade," and "Saturday Night." The album also made the lower reaches of the American charts as the Blue Nile embarked on its first tour, a 30-date journey taking place in the British Isles and the U.S. In the ensuing years, the band members switched record labels, signing to Warner Bros., and contributed to recordings by Robbie Robertson and Julian Lennon. They finally emerged with their third album, Peace at Last, in June 1996. Another critically acclaimed release, it placed in the U.K. Top 20, but failed to chart in the U.S. ~ William Ruhlmann, Rovi

Sublime perfection
I love Blue Nile! The words seep through every crack of my heart and seem to sow what broke from troubles and hardships. This is one of those bands that stood out in music civilization . Not in the papers, because the music was to good...

Great band, more people need to have a listen and they will be turned on to them. I am thrilled to be able to hear them again. This is a band that should get air play but doesn't. Thanks Pandora for giving us the option.
The band transcends pop music, label music, and similar artists you may like. They are in a class of their own. They stand alone. Every note is placed with perfection, and touches the core.
touches the heart....

Blue Nile has been a favorite since 1984 - got to see them on their first tour and it was magic. Love em, want more. glad to know they are enjoyed, i can remember talkin about these guys in the 80"s and folk thought I was nuts, then I turn them on to the music and walla - new fans -who thought I was a lucky guy to see them.
One of my most favorite bands. They sound like the Style Council and a bit like Prefab Sprout.

Been a big fan since the first album. They are masters of their craft. They are "critics' darlings" but they shoulda been huge.
The Best - we loved them so much we named our restaurant after them when we lived in Lakeland, Florida - my husband and I are both from the Glasgow area - possiblity of another album - yeh!!! Linda
I always seem to come back to this band. "Peace at Last" got me through the death of my Father...

"Stay" and "Tinseltown in the Rain" are two of my all-time favorites... u n t i l "I Love this Life" came out, now I have 3; first heard them (along with Roxy Music's "Avalon") in 1984 & have been a fan ever since. they did a wonderful version of "Easter Parade" with Rickie Lee Jones that's worth a listen too.
They will release a new album in 2010, that's the latest I have heard. It was mentioned on British radio.

Great to see so many other listeners for this amazing band!!
They are indeed absolutely amazing. I could listen to them all day and dance to them all night.
These guys were nowhere to be found in Glasgow when I lived there earlier this summer.
All joking aside, what incredible music; perhaps my absolute favourite. Paul Buchanan's vocals are perhaps the best. and the songs... kill me.
It's almost impossible to not enjoy all four of their albums. It's been over fives years since their last release, where is the fifth album?
Priceless and timeless. 5 years since High, so we must be due a new recording soon.
WOW... I have just litterally just learned of these guys.. beyond cool.
they are so beyond timeless and eternal. fantastic

I first heard Blue Nile in 1984. I was fortunate to have a friend at that time who was a fellow musician and introduced me to their extraordinar y first album. A few years later, it was out of print in the US--good to see Pandora listing all of their records. In Scotland, I bought a remix of "Stay" on a 45 (yes one of those!:^) but sadly, it got damaged. Never have been able to find that version since. It had a different guitar sound that was innovative at that time.

I cannot get enough of Blue Nile. Paul's voice is pure heart and soul. Nobody touches me like his voice and writing does.
