The wistful, poignant sound of Nashville's Blue Merle was born when singer/songwriter/guitarist Luke Reynolds met standup bassist Jason Oettel. The two had been together for only four months when they were offered their first production/publishing deal from the president of Sony Publishing, who was eavesdropping on a recording session. Reynolds and Oettel were blown away by the offer but wanted to work on forming a band, something that would put them up front in the music business rather than in the background. Mandolinist Beau Stapleton joined first, followed by drummer William Ellis, and -- borrowing a line from Led Zeppelin's "Bron-Y-Aur Stomp" -- the band chose the name Blue Merle. Opening for the likes of Badly Drawn Boy, J.J. Cale, and Jem, along with appearances at Farm Aid and Bonnaroo, built the band's fan base and had reviewers comparing their sound to everyone from Toad the Wet Sprocket to the Counting Crows. With the help of producer Stephen Harris (U2, the Dave Matthews Band), the band released its debut, Burning in the Sun, on the Island label in early 2005. ~ David Jeffries, Rovi
It is such a shame that things did not work out for the band. Their sound was so unique - nothing out there like it today. Yeah, some elements were similar to coldplay, but Blue Merle's music is much better-more unique! Would LOVE for them to reunite. Either way, Burning In The Sun will ALWAYS be my favorite CD!
I was very disappointed to hear they could not work out their differences. They could have given us so much more. Maybe we will be lucky enough to hear from them again.

Way better than coldplay
Nashville breeds good musicians...why? Everyone is a music critic so singers have to step up. Get over it. This is a perfect example.

I remember "burning in the sun" I actually use to have this blue merle cd before I moved out to TX. The lead singer's voice does sound like Chris Martin but he also reminds me of the band, The Fray a bit. Love that sensitive cultivated sound
I'm not a Coldplay fan, but if they sounded like this I would dig 'em! This is much more alive than Coldplay....I best to check out the new project!

watch for Luke's new project "Pictures and Sound" releasing on Vanguard 8/12/08. Another collaboration with cream of the crop musicians.. and producer Jacquire King. If you are a fan of Blue Merle, you'll LOVE P&S.
