Comprised of a trio of seasoned professional musicians, Blackhawk became one of the most successful new country groups of the mid-'90s, scoring a string of Top Ten hits from their first two albums. Featuring Henry Paul (lead vocals, mandolin), Van Stephenson (guitar, vocals), and Dave Robbins (keyboards, vocals), the band formed in the early '90s, releasing its first single, "Goodbye Says It All," on Arista Records in late 1993. "Goodbye Says It All" sailed to number one, quickly followed in 1994 by the number two "Every Once in a While," the number nine "I Sure Can Smell the Rain," the number ten "Wherever You Go," and the band's eponymous debut album, which would eventually go platinum. Strong Enough, Blackhawk's second album, was released in the fall of 1995 and was equally successful, spawning the hit singles "I'm Not Strong Enough to Say No," "Like There Ain't No Yesterday," "Almost a Memory Now," and "King of the World." Love & Gravity followed in 1997, with The Sky's the Limit appearing a year later. After just four albums, Blackhawk issued its first hits collection in mid-2000. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi
I saw that Wynonna tour, too., and I left after Blackhawk. Henry Paul Is back with a post-Huey Thomasson Outlaws, with a new album. It's really the Henry Paul Band more then the Outlaws, though.
van stephenson died of a rare type of melenoma. sad day for a great band. i play in a cover band and we still play their music and have found theres still a huge audience who still love blackhawk music
Blackhawk was great with the short time we had them. Love all their songs still today. And yes; they lost one of their members to cancer. His name slips me at the moment, but that is the root cause if their quick demise.
These guys comprise one of my all-time favorite groups! Love the sound, the haromonies are great!

Henry Paul and Dave Robbins are now touring as the Outlaws, Henry's original band from 1970's. They are straight up Southern Rock which is where Henry's heart is... Blackhawk is great but it was a a bit of a sell out to Nashville for Henry. Also check out his solo band Henry Paul Band from 1979-1983. Awesome southern/country rock... all Outlaws and HPB CD's are available on the internet.....or go to Outlawsmusic.com or Henrypaul.com.....
Their 2002 album Spirit Dancer is very good too. In fact, the song Spirit Dancer is dedicated to Van Stephenson, the deceased band member. Check it out.
They lost one of the members and they just don't sound the same now. They played a bar by me a couple years ago. Not so good any more. Too bad because they were amazing.
prob bcus they never got into more of a rock country attitude and feel which is where the country world turned to shortly after blackhawk fell off the map. they had more of an old school feel to their music and this is what made them who they were as a band. they will always be a band who will be respected throughout country music. great band..just sayin
i must agree that the song or EXPERIENCE that is ships of heaven is for all who want to understand the human spirit, you cry,you cannot help but to see what the band was thinking let alone singing.this song touches everyone who hears it we all have spirits . blackhawk is a rare group following in the shoes of groups like alabama, beachboys, its all about the harmony and they bring it full throttle. in honasty in all my music and all my fav.groups this is the only group that i like 98%of the songs
Retire? What rock are you under boy? They are currently touring with The Outlaws, which was Henry Pauls' original band from the 70's when they formed here in Tampa town! ;^)
The selected discography is missing BlackHawk's latest release, Spirit Dancer, which was released in 2002. It is a great album, as is all their albums. This is the first album without Van Stephenson and the album is dedicated to him. Let's keep BlackHawk alive by supporting their music. I'm hoping for another album. Does anyone know if they've released any new music?
That would be Van Stephenson that died. If you ever get to hear the song Sailing on the ships of heaven, he wrote it and that song was played at both of my parents funerals and will be played at mine as well. It really makes you cherish life.
